I always hate how the interviewer tries to make it out like she was a bad mom for not trying to get out Jack sooner. Like, the guy kidnapped and r*ped her. Was she really supposed to trust that he would do the right thing? Besides, Jack saved her. He gave her purpose and a reason to keep getting up and fight.
What hits me the most about the bad attitude this interviewer had was just the lack of care and empathy for Joy's situation. Just because Jack is a child does not mean his life is more precious or important than Joy's. She just completely glossed over the fact that Joy was severely traumatized and was too terrified to let her child out of her sight. Why would she trust her captor? Joy overcame incredible odds to survive and to nurture and teach her son the best she could under the circumstances. She was just an adolescent girl when she was stolen. The human brain doesn't even finish developing until age 25. More importantly, though, I wish people would realize that we don't lose our worth just because we grow up, but yet this attitude is constantly reflected in our unsympathetic society. All people make mistakes, accidentally and otherwise. Our entire lives are just one long learning experience and no one will ever be perfect. Yet, we often behave as if anyone who makes a mistake, trusts the wrong person, etc. deserves the bad things that happen to them. We judge one another so harshly and make snap judgments based on our learned criteria of who deserves sympathy and who doesn't.
I think she knew instinctively that it wasn't safe to get Jack out sooner as an infant or toddler. He's living proof directly connecting Joy to the kidnapper and I don't think Old Nick would've tolerated that kind of evidence just walking around.
It was such a viewer-baity type of question, the type of line that would be played all over the advertisements for this interview on television leading up to the premiere night, with dramatic music playing in the background. "Did it ever occur to you to ask your captor [insert longer pause than took place during actual conversation]..........to take Jack away?" followed by a "dun dun DUN..." and a narrator saying something along the lines of, "Tune in to hear Joy Newsome's SHOCKING answer! Tonight at 6:00 EST." It was a question for the ratings and a sensational program, that's all. The host's fake empathy was the entire point. It was extremely phony, she didn't care about what Joy had been through at all. It was a terrible decision for her mental health, and yet the lawyer had advised Joy that one prime-time interview alone would have a huge financial benefit that could really help get her and Jack on their feet and a road to independence. It's sick and wrong and yet feels oh so real.
Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay’s performances in this movie are extraordinary! This is one of those movies that’s incredibly made/acted, smart, and emotionally profound, but that I don’t think I can watch a 2nd time
Joy was so smart to think of the plan she did. She realized after he cut the power off that the cold was the perfect believable cause for Jack to be sick. It's terrifying that if Joy had managed to kill Nick in the room they still would have been stuck there and eventually starved because every time he entered he locked the door and was the only person who knew the code.
this is a phenomenal, incredibly underrated movie. brie and jacob were just stellar! kind of a hard movie to “love” because of the content but extremely easy to appreciate nonetheless.
I agree it's a phenomenal movie, but to me it seems strange to say a movie is underrated when it won the Oscar for best lead actress (Brie Larson). Most movies don't even have Oscar nominations...
@@_MicZ_ i say underrated in terms of being well known. not many people that aren’t cinephiles will have even heard of it. i think it’s a well made film that tells a compelling story and that’s more than can be said for 80% of the movies that are popular today.
People who say “Brie Larson can’t act” should watch her other movies not just the MCU ones that so far hasn’t given her much to work with. I hope Nia Di Costa will help bring out more Room Brie! Brie got her many awards including a golden globe and Academy award thanks to this role! Jacob was also incredible in this and out classed so many other older actors that year. Insane this is a 6 year old movie!
I wish more people realized the problems with Captain Marvel were in the script, not with Brie. When the main character is brainwashed and has amnesia for most of the movie, of course the audience is gonna have trouble getting to know Carol’s personality. Brie did her part giving the performance the script asked for.
When people say Brie Larsson isn't a good actress because of Captain Marvel, this movie's my response! I feel like some people forget how great she was in this movie!
I always actually felt sad for Joy's father and wish there was more of a resolution in the film for him. As a father, he is not just provider but the protector. Can you imagine what Joy's family went through while she was gone? He and her mother were probably hating themselves thinking she was most likely murdered and having to heal through that. Now they find out shes alive and all the emotions are now coming back. Yes, I'm sure they want to be so happy shes alive and back with them. But now they know what she went through on a daily basis for 7 years. It's not like "and they lived happily ever after..." they all have something to deal with now. While it's not Jack's fault on ANY level, hes a reminder of what Joy, their one and only child, went through. Joy's father couldn't protect her from all this horror. He has to heal to. Everyone had trauma in different ways. I love love love this movie. It's about healing through the worst through love.
I, too, thought they were reacting to The Room and was looking forward to their reaction. But like Epic Voice Guy says in the Honest Trailer for The Room....not Room, THE Room...very different.😁 Cheers, --Matthew
This movie highlights how messed up some people are and how difficult it would be to protect your children, threats are everywhere, but at the end of the day children will grow up and explore the world. Brie Larson & Jacob Tremblay ( brilliant performances)
Wow, I bet Emma Donoghue (who wrote the novel "Room" upon which this film is based as well as the screenplay of the film) will be amazed to hear about a "spin-off". Hope she gets royalties for that "just as heartwrenching, maybe even more memorable" spin-off. Who wrote it anyway? Only tutorialslave knows, apparently!
A great review. Emma Donoghue has always made it clear that "Room" (either the book or her screenplay) is not based on any particular 'real life' examples. Rather, she was trying to capture the experience from Jack's point of view. This is probably clearer in the novel rather than in the movie. I'm Canadian and the daughter of a CanLit teacher, so when Emma Donoghue's novel "Room" came out in 2010, I should have been one of those people who read it right away. But no, just as you reflect in your review, this is not a topic that anyone wants to think about, let alone read about. But I did eventually read Emma Donoghue's novel, which is incredibly moving and thought-provoking. So when I heard that a film of "Room" was being released, I felt much the way as I initially did about the novel... reluctant. But this film is amazing. As you noted, there is not a lot of "action" (in the physical sense) but emotionally, the action is non-stop. Here is a 2020 interview from TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) with Emma Donoghue (writer of both the novel and screenplay), Lenny Abrahamson (director), Brie Larson ("Ma") and Jacob Tremblay ("Jack") to commemorate "Room" winning TIFF's People's Choice Award in 2015.
