Ran into Mark Cuban leaving a Stars/Pens game back in the 07-08 season. We were walking down the stairs after the game (Pens 3-2 in a SO, Crosby with the winner) and I got to have a 2 minute conversation with him because it was rumored that he was going to buy the Pens because he was a Pittsburgh native. I asked about the rumors of him buying or Mario moving and he looked at me and said quite frankly that Mario was just floating his name out there to get the city on board with a new arena and that Mario would never move the Pens from Pittsburgh. Definitely on my list of top 3 conversations I've ever had, and was surprised he entertained me. I told him he ought to think about it because the Pens were going to win the Cup in the next couple seasons. Also love that jersey, its much better than the RoboPens home jersey they wore during the mid 90s-2000 time frame.

Pittsburgh sports All the time He has a right to be, those Devils teams from 1994-2004 would’ve won at least 2 more cups (1994, & 2001) if they had superstars like Lemieux, or Jagr.
As for the Robo Penguin, while it doesn't look bad, it is hated for what it means. The Pens won in '91 and '92 with the Skating Penguin. Then they turned their backs on it and won no more Cups with those players. The reason for the dislike is superstition. That logo is jinxed. Howard Baldwin wanted a rebrand for the team to make it his.
@@hugh2hoob668 Yeah, but I think the Crosby-Ovechkin rivalry is all hype. Tom Wilson has now become the face of that rivalry. Also, don't forget Ovi and Malkin's beef in the late 2000's.
The Howard Baldwin owned Penguins made the playoffs every year during his eight years as an owner, including a Stanley Cup win. But Baldwin and his ownership group had amassed a massive player payroll and played in an aging arena. Players were asked to defer their salaries, but financial pressures caught up with the owners and they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1998. Mario Lemieux was retired and the team still owed him $35 million in deferred salary. The ownership mortgaged the future to keep the small market penguins competitive.
Lots of history - good AND bad - with my beloved Penguins. I saw many, many games with them wearing that jersey but never liked it and was ecstatic when they brought back the skating Penguin with the "Vegas Gold." Nicer jersey from that era was the simple "Penguins" across the black.
In 1998 the wonderful people running the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania allocated hundreds of millions of dollars for stadiums for the Pirates, Phillies, Steelers (with Pitt football) and Eagles (with Temple football). When the Pens didn't try to get in on that is puzzling to me. It wasn't as though they weren't looking for a new building at that time. I believe just 3 years later Allegheny County voters rejected a plan to increase the sales tax to pay for a new building. The money eventually came from gaming revenue but I thought they were gonners in 2007. There was a proposed casino w/ arena whose bid was rejected and right after the mayor of KC said Christmas had come early. I really thought they were done.
I know but sadly every time they get a low point, they get the 1st overall pick that changed their franchise and the league... then proceed to win a few cups just to piss off every non penguins fan lol
Jessie Gandhi geez as a Flyers fan I wonder what it's like to sink that low to get franchise saving players because my Flyers Org. has never experienced that because The Flyers history has always been mediocre to good and to have very good teams and never hit the basement as a team to hit the jackpot on draft day It must be nice I guess ?
Also: WTF!? They lost 25 millions in the mid-90's after they won two cups!? Also, I hope to see another rivalry video in the future. Maybe Leafs-Bruins or Rangers-Devils?
Pittsburgh broke my heart 3 years ago. Seriously I was really depressed for a week and even to this day, that game 7 double ot loss still hurts a little bit.
Longest drought is pretty much the: let's found a franchise player before bankruptcy ! To be fair, there where still a few pretty good players before the arrival of Lemieux and Jagr but nowhere near close to build around...Lost assets could be Ron Francis ? Or Maybe Martin Straka ? Some depth can be good sometime...Also the mini drought of the beginning of the 2000 was pretty hard to live throught...Also imagine long term if Angelo Esposito played like in the international level or the junior level...Sad end...
Life long Oilers fan, but as a hockey fan first I can appreciate the Penguins. 5 cups is something for any team to hang the toque on. Oh and before you say anything about tanking to get the 1st pick equals winning a cup..... Well just saying (again life long Oilers fan), if tanking wins cups we should have won 2 or 3 in the past 10yrs. Keep up the great work Shannon!
I mean look at who they drafted with those picks though. This doesn't just include first overall picks btw, just look at all of their "good" picks in the last 10 years. Taylor Hall (future league MVP), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (solid #2 center who's consistently produced), Jordan Eberle (great scoring top 6 winger), Oskar Klefbom (top pairing dman), Darnell Nurse (top 4 dman, who's still growing), Leon Draisaitl (art ross winner, probable 2020 MVP), Connor Mcdavid (generational talent), Kailer Yammamoto (top 6 winger whos still growing), Evan Bouchard (low end NHL level dman whos ready to make the jump to the league next season). See my point? This doesn't even include all the other players they've drafted outside the first round that are great players, and some other first rounders that I haven't mentioned yet. (Puljujarvi, Bear, Benson, Lavoie, Jones, Marino, Khaira, Gustaffson, Rieder, Ganger, Petry). The only real BUST that the oilers have had in drafts has been the obvious pick in Yakupov. As well it's uncertain right now whether Puljujarvi is a bust yet. The oilers issue isn't drafting. It's asset management and trading. They consistently make terrible trades, their value in drafts is always bad, and they have suffered because of it. The oilers are good at drafting, just TERRIBLE at putting a team around those drafted players. You hate to see it. I really think that with the right management the oilers are ready to make that next step. Imo all they need now is another top 6 winger and an actual reliable goalie (maybe target Jarry/Murray at the expansion draft?) and they can really start to compete.
I’ve been a huge Pens fan ever since I was in grade school, which coincided with Lemieux coming into the league. The only time I’ve ever cried after any game, any sport, was after David Volek scored in game 7 OT in 93. My main point of this comment is that I’ve seen some BAD Pens teams in my lifetime. Sure we’ve had incredibly talented teams, but a lot of people don’t remember how ugly things were at times on the ice. For example, in 02-03, they lost 19 games in a row. Zigmund Palffy said he’d rather sit at home than play for this team (and he was playing with Lemieux!!) There’s a reason they picked first or second in the draft 4 years in a row. The Crosby lottery was pure luck though.
Any jersey with the Pigeon is usually despised by the local faithful. It is frequently misrepresented that the Penguins were bankrupt twice. It happened once. In 1975, the Penguins were put in receivership by the IRS because the owners did not pay the withholdoing taxes. Had the Penguins beaten the Islanders in 1975, the ticket deposits in escrow for the third round would have been used to pay those taxes and no receivership. In the 1974-75 season the Pens had the 5th best record in the NHL and attendance improved significantly. The city built the Section E balconies in 1975. This and Michel Briere's death were two of the low points early on. Management decided to build the team from the ground up after the 1982 loss to the Isles. A team of patchwork veterans never wins anything. The bad attendance in 1983 and 1984 was indicative of the massive steel industry layoffs that clobbered the area. You want a low point? The 1987-88 Pens had a winning record and 81 points - and finished last in the Patrick Division. They had a better record than six playoff teams that year. Another low point. Baldwin never had the money to operate an NHL team. He overpaid salaries and had no plan to replace the Civic Arena, which was obsolete in the 1980s. There was no problem with attendance or TV ratings. It was all Baldwin. The Pens could have been in on the new stadium/ballpark, but Baldwin begged out. Low point. Baldwin bought a team with a solid minor league system and wrecked it. Low point. A previous Pittsburgh mayor, Bob O'Connor, wanted the Penguins to leave and wanted an NBA team to come here. This is why there was no impetus to get a new arena until after he died. The Penguins put together a deal where Isle of Capri would have paid for a new arena - but the board appointed to issue the gambling license gave it to Don Barden - who managed to lose money operating his casinos. Low point. Who turns down a free arena? A bunch of dolts appointed by Fast Eddie $pendell, the tax raising lying sack of $**t from Filthydelphia, that's who. So, the noisiest bunch of anti-Penguins whiners come from Filthydelphia - who lost the A's, the Warriors, nearly the Eagles because Leonard Tose went broke gambling in Atlantic City - the city that went broke in 1990, who had its school system seized by the state not long after, and foistered Eddie $pendell on the rest of the Commonwealth - and Washington, who needed Penguins fans to sell out their home building. Hey Caps fans - 2-9 all time in the playoffs. Don't you miss Joe Gibbs? One other point - many NHL teams have faced lousy attendance - the Red Wings during the Dead Things era, the Blackhawks before Bill Wirtz died, the Devils (why does the NYC metro area have three NHL teams?) the Islanders after the cup years ended, the old Minny North Stars to name a few. Even the Blues were in bankruptcy and were going to be moved to Saskatoon. The Sabres were in bankruptcy as well. Bankruptcy had nothing to do with attendance.

If Pittsburgh left the NHL market the Capitals and Flyers would've went under too they *NEEDED* us without their rivalry with us they too would die out eventually you better believe it
Is it me or the 5 years without a 1rst round pick might hurt them long term in the next few years ? So little draft picks, the depth is gonna get low soon...
Yeah pretty much everyone knows this though. Like everyone knows the Penguins are gonna be DOGSHIT after the Crosby/Geno era, including the Penguins themselves. That's kinda the idea. That's very clearly what they are going for. You win as MUCH as you can right now with Sid/Geno and then after they are gone you deal with the rebuilding then. Hence why they trade their first round pick basically every year and they continue to get established players while giving up prospects in trades.
Mario was great but no, he wouldn't have gotten close to Gretzky in points even without the back problems. The gap was too big. Goals though, that could have been possible.
Closer than you think... Gretzky averaged 1.921 points per game. Lemieux averaged 1.883 points per game which included his last 2 seasons when he could barely skate; he only played 36 games in those 2 seasons and was a shell of his former self. Until then he was averaging 1.925 points per game. If he had played as many games as Wayne, it would have been very close. And keep in mind, Mario had to sit out a ton of games during what should have been the prime of his career. Who knows what that points per game average could have been. Of course, we will never know, but I do believe he would have been very close to 99's records.
@@paulhines5010 The games Mario missed were in the dry ninties. I can't see him hitting the same kind of points there, as in the eighties. There is a reason why Gretzky slowed down, and it's not only due to age.
Penguins fans and band-wagoners will tell you that Crosby is the Goat and their franchise is the best in the 103 year history of the NHL. Those years where they sucked, tanked for Lemioux and nearly moved, never happened according to them.
Josh Friedman Fans of teams not nearly as successful will talk shit on them like you do. I’ve been a fan for a very long time. Pre-Lemieux. Pens have had 4 players better than anyone on your favorite teams history. Turn green sucker.
Might have jake back the pens look good It’s a nice Jersey but I prefer the penguin with his hockey stick 🏒 logo we are spoiled with our pens but when they start losing some fans are fair weather but as a yinzer I can tell you this Mario saved the penguins twice once as a player once as an owner I still feel your take on things is spot on as always Thanks for your posts
Their fans will pretend that never happened and flaunt their five cups in your face. You were warned. Here come the rudest and most insufferable fanbase in the NHL. From: A Caps fan
Josh Friedman I would expect nothing more from an idiot Capitals fan. Your team has been good once. Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Aside from Ovechkin, who I love, your franchise hasn’t had anyone good enough to tie Lemieuxs, Jagrs, Crosby’s, or Malkins skates.
@@justinwalters7953 Most other fan-bases have a bias against them at this point. It doesn't help that their fans are unable to take any form of criticism.

Mario would’ve past Gretzky in all categories had he played as many games. Before he retired the first time, Lemieux had a ppg avg over 2. Had he been healthy and played at 100% I’m not sure what his ppg would’ve been
True, but you can't live your life arguing and debating hypothetical situations. Mario "would have" passed Gretzky if he didn't get hurt. Yeah. Maybe. But at the end of the day. He didn't pass Gretzky. He wasn't even close; and he DID get injured. So. Tough shit. You can't debate what "might have" or what "would have" happened, you have to use what DID happen; and what DID happen was Gretzky has well over 1000 points more than Mario, he still leads the NHL in all time goals (although Ovi is coming lmao) and he still has countless scoring records, whether it be playoffs, regular season, goals, assists, PPG, whatever it may be. If you want to try and say Mario "would have" passed Gretzky then I could just as easily say that I "would have" been an NHL player if I was a couple inches taller. But at the end of the day I'm not an NHL player and Mario didn't pass Wayne. See my point? This is coming from a Pens fan btw, no bias here.
Well sorry that I wasn't born until the late 90s to see them be bad. We know it existed. We're just tired of hearing about it. I know I'll still be supporting them after 87 and 71 retire

they too would die out eventually you better believe it
Agreed: love that jersey.
That is by far my favorite Pens jersey.
They need to bring back that logo
that logo looks like its for an airline
Favorite jersey, by far
Some Andy Chiodo fights on RUclips.
I love that jersey!
The period before Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby we're huge low points.
Only 4 seasons including the lockout for sid
How come Pittsburgh is always getting bankrupt?
over 50 years? thats not always.
Fair weather fans?????
You must be from Toronto
They literally brought in the coach from Miracle
Craig Patrick was also our GM he was herbs assistant
Can I have two tickets to Pittsburgh
Am I the only one who thinks this is the best Penguins jersey? I probably am.
It was bad luck
That's one of Pittsburgh's better jerseys.
No it isnt flying caps logo fan lol
I wish they would have some more Low points as I'm not a big fan of Pittsburgh :)
@@paulhines5010
The games Mario missed were in the dry ninties.
@@justinwalters7953 '3. Ovechkin is better than Malkin, hands down.
@@justinwalters7953 And they lucked into getting those four hall of famers. Never forget the tank for Lemioux.
103 years!? you're literally the dumbest caps fan
Original 6 teams arent even 103 years old lol
@@joshfriedman7099 not hands down both are elite
Malkin has 2 more cups and more assists
watch em go bankrupt again and win 2-3 more cups in pittsburgh within the next 20 years
Might have jake back the pens look good
It’s a nice Jersey but I prefer the penguin with his hockey stick 🏒 logo we are spoiled with our pens but when they start losing some fans are fair weather but as a yinzer I can tell you this Mario saved the penguins twice once as a player once as an owner
I still feel your take on things is spot on as always
Thanks for your posts
Hi
All they've done is tank for generational talents. Should've moved them to KC.
Kansas wishes!
Their fans will pretend that never happened and flaunt their five cups in your face. You were warned. Here come the rudest and most insufferable fanbase in the NHL.
From: A Caps fan
Your bias against them is just as bad as the part of the fan base that knows nothing
That's their best jersey
No it isnt lol
All you people who hate the penguins better get used to us, we will be around as long as hockey is being played
Lol
@@KevinJL technically pittsburgh did have hornets pretty old hockey team
Was a big fan of Rick Kehoe-not so much the Pens...
#Vivalarobopenguin
No that's the ugliest jersey they've ever worn
Pittsburgh is a small working town one of the best in USA
People here dont waste money on a loser other fanbases could learn a thing or 2 from us as long as you keep showing up management wont change a damn thing your wallet is a powerful weapon in sports
Awful fanbase
Again, you must be from Toronto. Most self rightous nhl fans are. Or Philly, of course.
@@57beachboy neither, but the pens fanbase is completely fairweather.
You don't know what you are talking about.
Bandwagon Penguins fans probably don’t know how bad the Penguins were in their first 20 years or just pretend they don’t exist. 🤪
Well sorry that I wasn't born until the late 90s to see them be bad. We know it existed. We're just tired of hearing about it. I know I'll still be supporting them after 87 and 71 retire
51 years old. Father was doctor of Pens throughout all the Blue/White Jersey years up through and past Lemieux. Some of best memories were from those early years. Got to hang out with players in locker room after wins. Saw guys get stitched up during games. Absolutely loved thise early years of Pens. To this day i only eear the blue jersey.
Was watching the pens since the 1980s
And we have 5 cups so shut it most successful expansion team
20 years for an expansion team is nothing dumbass
The pens still have the most cups outta the 1967 teams
You're the one that's hockey ignorant lol
Another twit. I have been a fan since 1974 - in all likelihood longer than you have been alive, because NOBODY born in the 1960s was named Kyle.
