First Strike is an EP released in 1985 by British hard rock band Def Leppard. The release contributes 7 tracks, 4 of which were released on their debut, all from their early days. These are the only recordings with their original drummer, Tony Kenning.
The front cover shows a map of the United States with rips from a leopard's claw (you can see the left front paw.) The back cover contains this message written by producer Frank Stuart-Brown: "This collection of early tapes proves the talent of five teenagers who took Sheffield and the rest of the U.K. by storm in 1979. These tracks established them as clear leaders in the resurgence of heavy metal rock and led to a first rate record deal which they are currently enjoying. This album is dedicated to the band and to the many fans that have made them the big stars they are today."
"Answer to the Master", "When the Walls Come Tumbling Down", "Wasted", and "Sorrow is a Woman" were all rerecorded and released on Def Leppard's debut record: On Through the Night.
    Released: 1985
Recorded: Fairview Studios, Hull, United Kingdom, 1979
    Producers: Frank Stuart-Brown, Peter Martin
    Engineer: Roy Neeve
    Re-Mix: Hank's Basement Lodge Studios, Cologne, W. Germany, 1984
All songs written by Def Leppard, except for noted below.
    No. Title Writer(s) Length
    1. "Heat Street" Def Leppard 2:51

I know the original release credited Rick Allen, but does anybody know for certain who the drummer was who played on this demo? Tony Kenning was the original drummer but he had already left prior to the recording of The Def Leppard EP in '78, so they used a session drummer Frank Noon for that & offered him the gig but he declined, which is when they got Rick Allen onboard. This demo was recorded in '79 ahead of 'On Through The Night', as it was what got them the deal. The history books state Frank Noon only did the EP so if this is Rick's debut recording it is surely his greatest performance from a drummer's perspective (playing wise not production) & he was only 16-17! He sure proved himself here. To me the only Def Leppard that matters is the Pete Willis era. Steve Clark RIP

First Strike was released by their original management under Frank Stuart Brown in retaliation against Leppard who was fired by Def Leppard and replaced with Prime Management who produced AC/DC recommend by Bon Scott. The album came out in 1983 and was released as a dedication to the original lineup with Pete Willis on lead guitar. These were studio demos.some never made On Through the Night LP which was the album under Frank Stuart Brown. There were few copies left out there as Joe Elliot and the members from 1983 sued Brown for illegally releasing this album without permission from the band. It’s very rare and hard to find. It’s still worth owning.

I love this demo album. First Strike was issued commercially in 1984 but the band pulled It from the market due to legal complications Cause apparently It wasn’t authorized. Joe says he hated the way that it sounded.....well if you compare it to Mutt Lange productions yeah I can understand but the songs on this demo sound better than those that appear on On Through The Night. The Sorrow versión her kills the official release......actually all the versions here sound incredible. They should really release it because it sounds like a band that doesn’t need a slick production to kick ass.

3 observations from someone who's liked them from 1980 and only up to Pyromania.
Rick Allen's triplets are amazing on track 2. The "Walls" version here shoulda been on the finished album. And there's too much phaser through Pete's guitar on Wasted.

I liked them before OTTN came out and was disappointed in the production/mix of the first album. Their EP's were much more rock orientated. I found it all a bit girl-centric American and walked away. Rocks Off and wasted were the greatest, even The Overture was better on the EP, without the heavy handed American radio friendly mix that the album went for.

Def leppard was and still is a great band, even their less popular albums are better and more interesting than 80% off the other rock/metal albums that came out in the last 35 years, their highlight was with the album hysteria, so i'm talking about all the albums that came after, this band had hard times, the accident of the drummer that left him with one hand only, the death of steve clark, but they continued and made it big, this band had a great potential from the beginning and they fulfilled it entirety, cheers to you for sharing and cheers to def leppard, a fantastic band.

On Historia, the vid for Hello America, the intro(giving details of the record date, etc.), the question is: "See if you can figure out why Rick's drum kit is in front." It's been almost 30 years, and for the life of me, can't even guess. any ideas?? HELP!

I remember hearing Joe, I think, or one of the others say in a different video that it was the director's idea (again, I think) to do that. I guess he thought it was cool to do it that way? I also recall one of them saying that it was because the drummer was the one that left the stage first (a joke or serious? - I don't know) but that doesn't really make any sense to me. Either way, it seems a bit silly to me to have it front and center, but what do I know.

Thanks for the reply, dude! Same conclusions I arrived at. Never heard of the director's idea, but who knows? Maybe just doing something different to gain attention?

James Oberg I totally know what you are talking about and i have been wondering that since I saw that on the Historia video. I have no idea and would love to know. They ask the question as if you can figure it out but i have no clue and have never heard the band reference it.
