    TTo all those who complain he is not beatmatching. First of all, Jeff is mixing for a solid 30 years now. Secondly, he is choosing tracks based on energy, style, texture and rhythm and not necessarily based on similar production, similar sound so he can layer track over track without anyone noticing. He is not Richie Hawtin and as you can see he doesn’t use processor or effects for the transitions between tracks. This is the Jeff Mills style of mixing, sometimes “quick and dirty” sometimes loud and galloping like a horse but this is techno people. Maybe it isn’t your cup of tea but this is normal. However, for me anyone saying that Jeff Mills is not a god DJ is just clueless.

    Jeez, it's like everyone commenting on the beat matching is somehow able to do it better but will never have to prove it as the keyboard is a great ego boost. On the off chance any of these people are DJs with access to 3 decks, whether they be turntables, CDJs or controllers, if they have a physical pitch adjust give this a go with a bit of paper covering the BPM on any display you may have. Basically you've got 16 bars of music maximum to get the next track beatmatched, cued up & dropped into the mix with no sync button pressing allowed. I would actually place my house on the fact you couldn't do it for hours at a time. I've owned turntables for well over 20yrs & even tried to emulate this kind of style in the mid 90s with a friend on 3 decks & we couldn't do it anywhere near as good or fast as Jeff does, & that's with one of us ensuring the mix was in time whilst the other set up the next track, so what he achieves on his own is absolutely mind blowing from a technical standpoint. Also his incredible musical knowledge is evident as he intuitively goes from brand new tracks to older stuff, knowing how it will add to the set.
    Please don't look at this comparing it to modern day big name DJs, this is raw, powerful techno played by a person who loves the music more than the fame & fortune he can gain from it. I'm certainly not going to argue that the latest Top 100 DJs aren't at the top of their game, no matter what my opinion of the music they play, but if you brought any of them to watch Jeff, I'd guarantee you they'd be awestruck no matter what the beat matching was like as that simply doesn't matter when you play like this.

      +GAJ As much as I love Mills, he's a (godlike) producer first and a (technically) mediocre DJ second. I've seen Mills live more times than I've had hot meals, he can't mix, he's shit at it, but his music taste makes up for it. Mixing with three decks is NOT rocket science.

      +GAJ You make some very compelling points.
      Here's another reason why most people won't play on 3 decks - it sounds shit. Especially when Jeff Mills does it.

  • @djhaloeight

    Love this mix. People complaining about the beat matching should try to mix 3 turntables. I’ve been a vinyl DJ for 20 years and 3 decks is tough. All the perfectly sterile mixes nowadays don’t appeal to me like real vinyl techno/house mixes. I like when there’s a bit of a human element, you can hear the beats fall apart slightly and get pushed back in time. Regardless, Jeff Mills is a master at his craft. Respect.

    • @edfinch1237
      @edfinch1237 2 года назад +9

      Totally agree. People that have only mixed using CDs or digital media don't appreciate the effort that goes into keeping vinyl beats in time over a long period of time. Little imperfections in the vinyl like tiny warps, scratches, nicks and stuff are capable of pushing beats out of line as is the analog nature of the turntables themselves (the motors don't keep a completely perfect speed - particularly as they get older). Add in beat-matching x3 tracks and this is an amazingly skilled performance!

      Thought I knew house to a tiny tiny tiny degree, Went to Movement in 2022 and saw this man. I reconsidered everything I knew. Been on a journey ever since then to really dig deep into Jeff and the OGs. It’s hard to watch some the DJs I used to love cuz these Detroit dudes mix DIFFERENT.
      Absolutely love the “less clean” style of mixing, you can feel the effort and the direction they want to take things. I’m absolutely in love with the old Detroit/Chicago scene and will take advantage of the time we have left with all these masters.

      At finland we often referred the raves as "ravit" which is a word for horseraces . . for multiple reasons but especially because when the DJ doesn't get the mix right, it sounds as if you're in a horse derby :D

      @@toddw3nzel639 Well said, because time sadly is *Finite* Paul Johnson (Chicago, Relief, Dust Traxx, Dance Mania) was one of the early Covid deaths in 2020. Mike Huckabee (Deep Detroit Techno producer, knew Native Reaktor inside and out, taught Detroit children how to use Reaktor at a community center, & one of _The_ nicest people on this planet) died from Covid early on (2020) and caught from being in the hospital for a stroke. So people, play the hell out of the early Detroit Techno, Chicago house, DJs sets, and even U.K. producers (Vince Watson, and Dave Angel to name two are masters at their craft), because time is finite and precious.

      That is a pretty loose use of the word "mixed".
      Doing what Jeff is attempting to do here well is impressive, but doing it like Jeff actually does is not. Pretty much any average techno deejay can do at least as well.

    I remember hearing Carl Cox saying something along the lines of "some of the best mixes ever will have mistakes in them, but that is because the DJ is working to the absolute best of their ability to make that set the best it can possibly be". I would much rather hear that human element, hear the imperfections along with the craft and performance of a DJ working hard, than have it all pretty much done for you now with autocue and beat matching. I can't help but feel that the increased technology has actually had a negative impact on the performance - that feeling of a set being crafted by a human DJ not just a clever mixing machine.

I have listened to techno almost 20yrs and there are great DJs, all kinds of mixes and styles... none of them is like Jeff. Jeff is something special in electronic age. And btw, that "faulty" beatmatching isn't coincidental, trust me. I don't know about other ppl, I LIKE IT! Jeff is religion, Jeff is all.

      ***** Yeah, DJ's used to work with "tracks" and house and techno songs had an obvious intro, usually just bars of kick drum for the DJ to match and bring in. Producers were underground and wanted to be played by the DJ's, there was no hope of huge radio airplay. Now, it's all drops and crazy intro's and producers make songs they want to be hits on the radio. The DJ's I like still use songs as building blocks, the point is the mix.

      If you want to see a modern techno DJ do great things with a pair of technics and all vinyl I absolutely implore you to go check out Sunil Sharpe on the Boiler Room, one of the most invigorating sets I have heard in ages, and like Mills here he never lets his technical prowess cloud the groove.
      I suspect a lot of the Mills criticism is from the new wave of CD and digital DJs for whom the concept of having to struggle to nail a mix is simply a thing of the past - they hear some of the initial stages of some of the transitions here and think the odd clang is a symptom of a lack of skill, as opposed to a byproduct of someone who knows he is skilled enough to correct everything near-instantly refusing to let the fact that the odd beat might be a tiny bit off get in the way of the energy he is building.
      I will take hearing the human element in a dj mix over dull methodical tecnicality each and every time. (and go check that Sunil Sharpe set, it is unreal)

    • @executivesteve
      @executivesteve 9 лет назад +1

      ***** You are welcome man! I am really glad you enjoyed that mix! Its funny, I think there are still plenty of DJs keeping the flame burning, but it can be hard to find the good ones. I definitely think that a lot of the touring DJs you see would probably play vinyl if they didnt have to take a flight and deal with shitty hand luggage restrictions and the fear of their records getting lost or damaged, it takes a real trooper to still bother.with wax, but the amount of releases going around make me think it will be around for a good while yet as a format, or at least I hope so.

As you can see hes using 3 decks that doesnt show even what's bpm of the track, if he gave you to try to mix 2 tracks im sure that 90% of you wouldnt be able to do it since 90% djs nowdays are the sync heroes that are only changing track by track i saw that thousand times while Jeff is sometimes playing 3 tracks in same time that sounds so perfectly and even sync wouldnt be able to make it that good.

    01:17 Jeff Mills likes to put on techno tracks with this distinct pumping rhythm. I call it "propeller" or "running horse". As a techno producer you can build such techno rhythms by putting closed hihats, clicks or fast cutoff hihats, snares and other drum samples between the empty space of each kickdrum. Beats per minute should be around 130. Makes it rapid. Also add a distinct sound sample each fourth kickdrum to stress it and make it sound as if it's jumping.

    To all the commenters hating on his beat matching: this is what happens if you play three decks AND you don't have 2 minutes to spare to beat match. He puts on a record, cues it up, ballparks the tempo, and just gets on with it. Any correction he makes, he does so in the mix. Try it. And I don't mean just try to mix three decks; try to mix three decks AND do it as quickly as he does. Man, Tommy Flanagan played a few "wrong" notes behind Coltrane on Giant Steps, but he is still is Tommy Flanagan accompanying John Coltrane.

      Someone can prove me wrong but I'd argue his beatmatching was more consistent during his radio days as "the wizard" and he'd still go about beatmatching exactly as you described. It's a mystery to me, in some mixes it's as if he's using sync but he's not if you listen closely enough. Superhuman hearing to adjust the pitch to perfect within 2 beats of starting the next mix. All that while cutting, scratching, and beat juggling too. Relentless technique and efficiency.

    Its a great mix with lots of great mixer work and excellent music. For those mentioning the beat mixing. Well..your right, in places there are some issues and it's a shame they are near the start. If it was not being filmed I'm sure Jeff would have just started again. But there are lots of other redeeming qualities to this set.
    As for not being able to comment on the beat mixing, well of course people can. If something gets put on the internet with a comments section then there is room for positive and negative comments. And do we have to have better DJs only being able to comment on mixing ? no, anyone can if that's what they hear. Is it tough to mix on 3 decks, yes it's tough but then there is an acceptance that there could be issues when it's filmed live as well. But it's okay to mention it as long as it's not done in a nasty way. But we cannot live in a world where everything has to be positive and also we don't have to defend Jeff Mills, a legend.
    I learn to mix in 1991 and it ruined most of my favourite DJ tapes as some of them had really bad beat matching but I never noticed before. So learning to mix can make beat matching issues magnified and a lot of people won't even notice.
    If you can mix just ask yourself would you put this in to a club as an example of your mixing, the answer is no because you know the promotor will stop listening at the first issue. Even Jeff Mills would have started again until it was perfect. And I am sure he can do it amazing and perfect! but for this film it's still amazing and great to learn from even now.

      @@toddw3nzel639 no, I’ve just been a DJ since 1991 and its one of the things that gets ruined. Soon as you learn you hear beats going out and back in again. It ruins some of your fav mixes lol unfortunately its one of those things you cannot un-hear. But its a great mix and it keeps getting better and better. I’m not knocking it, just saying something that is true. I quite like mixing when its on the edge and the beats get a bit phase-y. I guess it would have been more perfect with a better start., for me that is. You like it just how it is and good on you.

    Anyone who knocks him for being slightly off with some of his beats is clearly fucking demented. I would love to see anyone of them mix with 3 decks at what could be classed as a fair tempo, whilst totally messing around with the bass, mid, treble and gain knobs and also sampling shit at the same time.
    It wouldn't sound right if there wasn't the odd bit off here and there. This is the way he plays and always has done. Put it this way I've seen a lot of top techno Dj's over the years and even taking their time mixing they weren't perfect so it shows how good Jeff really is.
    One last thing regarding what a guy wrote below saying he was booed off stage in France, all I can say about that is having been reared there on shit music it doesn't surprise me in the least. Only Laurent Garnier has come out of there with any reputation but not my cup of tea?? Kind of glad they will never get the chance to see some of the top top techno dj's from the 90's who would have fried their heads, they would have lost it and decided to build themselves into a meat patty and ask someone with a clue to fry them up!!! What the fuck do the French know about techno?????

    Those who complaining about Jeff's beatmatching being slightly off at places can't see the forest for the trees. Even there's no such thing as 'Perfect' beatmatching. If it's slightly off but u recover quickly it's totally fine. Beatmatching is just one basic part of mixing. U think he's not doing a good job on it go check boiler room of mcde, fourtet, etc even Derrick May! You guys would be the type of guys who looks at the dj's at trying so hard to spot mistakes and shit ahh.
