In this video I am playing my organ transcription of Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings.
Emblematic adagio, also used as soundtrack in celebrated films such as Platoon and The Elephant Man, as well as during funeral ceremonies of many royal families.
Nevertheless, this Opus 11, by the American composer Samuel Barber, doesn't want to be a “sad” music but rather a song of the soul.
The piece is very rich in suspensions, therefore in “thinking creatures”, as I have always loved to define suspensions in music, as the temporary melodic stationing, precisely of a note which remains prolonged with respect to the harmony in progress, has always brought to my mind a person who lingers a moment longer on a thought, a memory, an emotion...
In the crescendo the notes become higher and higher and when it seems that they cannot rise higher, they go one note higher! Remember, out of the darkness, no matter how deep, comes light!
Since I’ve recorded this piece only as audio (and not video), I’ve thought to provide a "visual commentary" inserting some photographs of mine taken during my hiking expeditions on the Alps.
I didn't record this video at the Consolata Sanctuary organ, but at the Gustavo Zanin organ, located in the Parish of Santa Rita in Turin (Italy).
