You had to be there I guess, lol. Today, it would be hard to imagine how much the Beatles meant. Their break up was a monumental time and you can hear the pain and angst in a lot of the songs by John and Paul right after, and this is one of those. There are several songs by both that are them speaking to each other via songs...some humorous and some a bit biting. John wrote several songs after the Beatles that really dealt with different painful things in his life. Even during the Beatles, his songs were always about something he was going through in his personal life. "Help" is a great early example and the lyrics show his desperation at the time, trying to cope with all that was happening around him.
“14:42” yes you’re right. he called himself the walrus because the Beatles wrote a song called “I am the walrus” he also said on an interview that he sings in a poetic way, so who knows what he really means on his lyrics. there’s so many interpretations
Lennon believed god or godliness came from within. Similar to the Zen saying, ‘if you meet Buddha in the road, kill him’ the idea being to kill that notion as Buddha can only be found from within. One has to BE the teaching not just read it. And that is concept of the song ‘God’. Like the opening line of ‘I am the Walrus’, ‘I am he, as you are he, as you are me, and we are all together’ also much like Lennon’s great song, ‘Instant Karma’ - the idea being, take responsibility, don't put it on someone else. 'it's up to you, ya you'
I lived in this time and Woman were not treated as Equals and John and Yoko fought against all those Stupid stereotypes. She sat in their Let it Be sessions quietly mostly because she had just had a miscarriage so wanted to be close to her partner. In the New version of the Film you will see other partners and their kids were there too. Alan Klein screwed the Beatles and Paul saw it for the disaster it was so had to break up the Beatles. The Beatles did many firsts like getting control of their Music and production allowing them and other artists to indulge in their talent. They stopped segregated audiences at their concerts, they had the first Stadium concert. They accepted people from all walks of life and included that in their songs. They did Kids Songs and songs for their Elders and early experimental music...mostly on 4 tracks. They deflated egos and the pomposity of Leaders. John and Yoko did interviews together as equals and spread the message of equality and Peace as an Alternative to the Far Right Dream of Eternal War and everyone should be quiet and in their place.
People in the 60s went eastern because of LSD. Not because they just wanted to get away form western religion. Buddhism is about oneness with God just not a personal God.
"God" is John's reminder that we choose our beliefs and our choices are our own right and responsibility. That's all. Good catch picking up on the gospel cadence. John understood irony.
God is a concept by which we measure our pain. A lot of non practicing Catholics/Christians/people in general only call on gods help when things in their life are bad or at their absolute worst. They never pray or acknowledge god when things are going good, but all of a sudden, a family member or friend is in the hospital with a threat of death, what's the 1st thing they do? Pray for gods help. So it's a way to measure their pain. God is a concept by which we measure our pain.

The recently released short clip of the Beatles, filmed around the time of the break up, shows how well they still were, together! The break up wasn't anyone's "fault", just a natural event that we all go through, at some time! I think John was searching, and trying to define himself!
Depending on the level of the painful situation you're going through, reflects the same level you need God to help you get through the bad ordeal. (That was Lennons answer to what he meant by saying that in the song.)
The final section describes Lennon's change since the break-up of the Beatles. While the Beatles were basically his family throughout the 1960s, he states that he is no longer the "Dreamweaver" or "The Walrus", but just "John". The final line of the song, "The dream is over" represents Lennon's stance that the myth "the Beatles were God" had come to an end. "If there is a God," Lennon explained, "we're all it."
Atheists are good people. We are happy. We say that our transformative "freedom from religion" is the greatest weight of our shoulders. A deeper happiness. We make our own meaning.
The best way to get any perspective of this song is the knowing of the times that this song was written in. It was the end of the insane late 60's and John was right out of the Beatles and going through a heavy spiritual and personal transition. My understanding of God is this: God is a process. God is everything and everyone he mentions in his song. God is everything and everyone that has ever existed and that ever will exist into eternity, the yin and the yang, the alpha and omega, the all in all. To quote a bible passage: "Ye are all Gods" Psalms 82. The Beatles broke up because their journey had run its course and it was time to live the next chapter in their lives. What is that crazy light going on behind you? I want one of those.
Yoko is Japanese not Chinese and you guys sort of got the point but not quite!Zimmerman is Bob Dylans real name!God is about Lennons rejection of myth!
What he means by "The dream is over" is a message to his fans that the Beatles are finished. Please get on with your lives... By the way, when he mentions "Zimmerman," that's Bob Dylan.
His thoughts were too much for most people to grasp. He often just wrote from the hip. Songs like this one show his absolute genius. More than what a lot of music that is made today, also Yoko had nothing to do with the break up of the Beatles. His relation to him not believing in the Beatles was his moving on with his life is all.
God is a concept how we measure our pains. That means how religious people are when it fills our need. When your not in pain, your not praying to your good to make it better. But when your in need you Come back. So he says. Its an consept. Its not real. Its your own saviour to survive.
Dr. Arthur Janos of The Primal Institute claims that John had rented a house in Bel Air. There they talked about God. Dr. Janos was going on and on about how people who were in the most pain tended to need the most gods or the presence of God in their lives. John replied, “So God is s concept by which we measure our pain.” Dr. Janos points out how succinctly and efficiently John summarized what he was trying to convey.
Yoko is Japanese- American And The Beatles started to break up before Yoko and John dated (When Byan their manager died) Being a beatle was socially killing John Lennon Yoko simplely give John a chance to be John Lennon
I see the song as just questioning the things we worship in life, not just the Christian God that many of us believe, but the many things in life that we worship, government leaders, musicians, and so on. There’s the focus on taking care of himself and those around him, “I just believe in me.... Yoko and me”, before worshipping these other things in life. I don’t think it’s a disrespect to any of those beliefs, it’s just there to make you think about what it is you worship. Also referring to himself as the Walrus takes reference from the Beatles song, I Am The Walrus.
It just sounds to me like he's talking about getting back to normal after the dreamlike altered reality of being in the Beatles. As for all the names he mentioned, he's just trying to say that he doesn't think any of those things can be depended on, or have a whole mature life based around relying on them - whether it's worshipping other people, or religions. It's a good song. I doubt the Beatles could have kept going, it was a hugely busy time for them all, and there was probably a lot of stress being part of the Beatles, and they needed a break or get back to a slightly more normal life, and possibly to revive their creativity.
2:35 I think this is possibly the only actual genuine first time hearing any song reaction vid I have seen on youtube, I nearly choked my beer at the initial surpressed anger. I watched it the whole way through and at first I thought you were going to skirt the whole point of the song but you got to it about midway had some mild discussion before moving the convo onto me me me with a lot of physical self reinforcement like mimicing breastfeeding by touching lips, same thing with fingers and beads and general nervousness. I do not mean it in a critical way I just find it interesting peoples reaction when what they hold to be true is challenged, Im sure I would react in the same way if someone told me the sky is green, because I know it is generally blue. My take on this song is he is saying you do not need any pre ordained system of the culture you were born into to realize God. He's saying it's all in your head as imagination, which without going into specifics, it basically is. I should say here perhaps that I don't believe in God, I know "it" to be real. Good video though thankyou I really enjoyed it. God Bless John Lennon.
John Lennon was always searching for "The Answer". Most of the items he references are things he tried, often very publicly. The conclusion he came to, after his obsessive search is that the only thing you need is belief in yourself and someone you love. By the way, the Hitler line is saying "I may not believe in some of the things you do, but that doesn't make me evil".
Another thought or two if I may. When I use the word "context" I am in some ways speaking of where ones head is at when they actually write their thoughts, it only reflects where they're at in that moment of time, not necessarily where they "stay" so to speak. Even C.S. Lewis, one of the most renowned defenders in history of Christianity was at one point an atheist. As someone that has been writing poetry & prose all my life I often am shocked by my own older observations in a piece I wrote. Everything is transcendental including our thoughts at the moment. God Bless...You both did a wonderful job on this one...PLH-ELB
this song is John trying to recover his personal identity after the wild ride he had been on with Beatlemania.... as great and important as the Beatles were, they had gotten huge and popular to a degree that was absolutely absurd, and people were placing outrageous expectations on them... this song is John telling people to come back to earth, and to recover his life and focus on his relationship with Yoko... what does he believe in? .... he believes in finding himself, and in his love for the person he had chosen as his life partner.
The opening line of the song came about because of a conversation John had with his friend, Elliot Mintz. Elliot brought up the correlation between being poor and religiosity. In other words, the poorer the nation or person, the more religious they are. Apparently, John immediately simplified this complex interconnection into "God is a concept by which we measure our pain."
I’m happy you guys decided to give Lennon another shot, though I still disagree with the claim of preachiness, Vin! Still am hoping one day you guys will do Bob Dylan, he was a lyrical monster, and there is a reason why he was the first 20th century musician to win a Nobel prize in literature, and “It’s Alright Ma (I’m only bleeding)” is prob like 90% of why.
Another reaction video that due to no fault of your own has no real context...This album is the greatest ever of the entire rock era, and maybe all eras...It was the first of its kind...So personal and honest...IMHO...PLB
"God is a concept by which we measure our pain" John is trying to say that people use god (or other believes such as kennedy, kings etc) to fill a hole (i.e. pain) in their life, the bigger the hole the more god they need. By saying that he "only believes in Yoko and me", he is saying that he has no more holes, no more pain, he has everything that he needs, he is truly happy.
Ono is Japanese, Vin. The name doesn't even sound Chinese. If you didn't preface that with "going to sound ignorant" I would tell you that conflating all Asians with each other is pretty racist. Good luck on that interview. #WebbWeek #MakeTheChurros
The Beatles were already falling apart. Lennon claims they fell apart when there manager died. He also claimed he wanted to leave the Beatles when the band was in its prime. He always wanted to meet an artist who had a strong personality, and he found that in yoko.
yoko ono is from japan, and survived hiroshima and was a badass. she is a classically train pianist, and co-wrote most of john's best solo stuff. she criminally under appreciated and misunderstood. also there actually was no dead wait in the case of the beatles. they all have amazing solo albums.
John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band is the name of the album. I don’t think John was actually in the Plastic Ono Band. It was just Yoko’s band and he used it as the title of his album.
I’ve always took the point of this song as saying strength comes from believing in yourself. People believing in all of the examples he mentioned come from fear of believing in yourself, or that believing in something or someone else does not lead to real strength. I am the walrus, and later in another Beatles song The walrus was John - lyrics from Beatles songs.
I am TOTALLY ASTONISHED that she said "Oh really" about their song "YESTERDAY"!!! "YESTERDAY" is only the MOST COVERED SONG in history, Do you even know what "covered" means in relation to songs? It means a singer who sings a song made famous by another singer. Really need to get at least some basic information regarding the Beatles. I know 5 year old children that know more about the Beatles than you do. You are missing out on a lot of great music.
Deep thinking. Even deeper than John intended I think. He’s not dissing everything he doesn’t believe in- he even mentions Bob Dylan “Zimmerman” and the Beatles. The point is to believe in yourself before anything else. Be true to yourself first.
Yoko was not Chinese, she was Japanese. And your step dad is wrong, she didn't break up the Beatles, she was just a convenient scapegoat for people!! All 4 of the Beatles had families they wanted to be with, and they were all finding different musical paths to follow!! After working together for so many years, they all needed space to grow on their own!!
John is just trying to find himself in this song and I'm not religious. But he's not being disrespectful. It seems to me and kinda clear he's had enough of everything around him when he wrote it.
Little known fact... You are wrong! Only three musicians performed on that album... John Lennon, Klaus Voormann and Ringo Starr. John played piano on this song and all the songs with a piano part on the album.
Actually all the members of The Beatles had a great career after they split up. Not just John Lennon or Paul McCartney but also George Harrison and Ringo Starr.Harrison for example was in a little supergroup called "The Traveling Wilburys" with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbinson. I'm not totally convinced that Yoko broke up The Beatles. Being in the biggest band in the world can be really exhausting and they were tired of constant touring way before Yoko Ono. George Harrison went on record long after the broke up to say that Yoko did nothing to break them up.They did that to themselves with constant arguing between Paul and John and he himself was also getting tired of having to put his own songs on hold so he thought to himself that either he stays in the band getting only one and one song on a record or he has to leave the band to get more of his creations on record.
This is a beautiful song. Don’t believe in idols. Believe in yourself. That is a timeless message.
14:49: He: "I'm pretty sure the Beatles did a song called Yesterday."
She: "Oh really?"
Sheer brilliance.

“14:42” yes you’re right. he called himself the walrus because the Beatles wrote a song called “I am the walrus”
he also said on an interview that he sings in a poetic way, so who knows what he really means on his lyrics.
there’s so many interpretations
Maybe hes ok with the ideas of Buddha but he doesn't believe in personality cult.
"The Dream is Over" If he only knew.
😢
Probably more powerful than Imagine. Incredible piece of music
Imagine hearing this whilst grieving the end of Beatlemania.
Listen to the Beatles: "In My Life", "A Day In The Life" and "Across The Universe".
In My Life is one of my favorites
Yes, he was the Walrus, one of the kings of pop culture. Probably one of the the biggest icons of his time.
This was someone who was utterly tired of all the bullshit. He deserved a few more decades.
Listen to "Love" by Lennon (sorta confirms what ya'll sayin) and listen to "beautiful boy" a song he wrote about his son he had with Yoko. Maybe Vin could sing it to Orion!!
His name was Shawn. He also had a son named Julian.
@@paulmccartneystoenail4897 sean* and julian was from a previous relationship. Hey Jude was about Julian which McCartney wrote.
yo mo- Yes, Sean. (It autocorrected for some reason and I didn’t even realize it 😂😂) Yes, I know, Sean was Cynthia’s son. (I think) And Hey Jude was Paul’s song.
What’s your point, though?
@@paulmccartneystoenail4897 trying to inspire Vin and Sori to listen to more Beatles. They need all the info they can get, i mean Vin didn't even know John was dead!!!
I feel this song is talking about the dualism of life, where we live in a "conceptual world" AND a physical world that "PUNCHES YOU IN THE FACE"!
Should we tell Vin about John? 🤔 a interview might be tricky 😉 Helloween ☆ Keeper of the seven keys 🎃
Atheists are good people. We are happy. We say that our transformative "freedom from religion" is the greatest weight of our shoulders. A deeper happiness. We make our own meaning.
Theres a difference between religion and spirituality
Ok Reddit
Fairly good analysis for people who don't know John
Probably my favorite post Beatles solo song
Your faces when the song dropped ! 😂.
Loving you're shows /reactions. Keep them coming !
The plastic ono band is probably my favorite album ever.
John replied, “So God is s concept by which we measure our pain.”
Dr. Janos points out how succinctly and efficiently John summarized what he was trying to convey.
Yoko is Japanese- American
And The Beatles started to break up before Yoko and John dated
(When Byan their manager died)
Being a beatle was socially killing John Lennon Yoko simplely give John a chance to be John Lennon

Just japanese who lived in america and England. She wasn't born in America or had american family. Her accent is still thick af😂
It was a way of saying the Beatles were done for good. A large part of the world mourned,
I see the song as just questioning the things we worship in life, not just the Christian God that many of us believe, but the many things in life that we worship, government leaders, musicians, and so on.
Its cool to see that the Beatles are in family debate all over, every day.
Thanks guys I enjoyed this very much.
Pleas more John Lennon. Jealous Guy, Instant Karma or Beautiful Boy
They should research the Beatles before he assumes that he knows. John Lennon didn't join the Plastic Ono band, he named his band after his wife.
this song is John trying to recover his personal identity after the wild ride he had been on with Beatlemania.... as great and important as the Beatles were, they had gotten huge and popular to a degree that was absolutely absurd, and people were placing outrageous expectations on them... this song is John telling people to come back to earth, and to recover his life and focus on his relationship with Yoko... what does he believe in? .... he believes in finding himself, and in his love for the person he had chosen as his life partner.
Yeah thats the message! No more to say
You've got to understand the Beatles just broke up i think john was letting go of all the pain that had built up.this was his way of letting it out
Part if this tune is also about depression... when you don't or cant believe in anything anymore, BELIVE IN YOURSELF...
This is one of those songs that are bigger than life!
15:40 He's definitely figuring out how Lennon thinks. Thank God.
Thank who?

Ono is Japanese, Vin. The name doesn't even sound Chinese. If you didn't preface that with "going to sound ignorant" I would tell you that conflating all Asians with each other is pretty racist.

It was just Yoko’s band and he used it as the title of his album.
was it john lennon who said women are N of the world i might remember wrong
I believe that was a Yoko Ono song.
@@incredulousdisbelief9841 no, it wasn't. She inspired it, but he wrote it.
How do you feel about that

Thanks for doing plenty of vids for us Atheists. Always a cool channel.
I don't think this should be considered as an atheist commentary. It's a commentary on the self and lack of dependence on outside views

This was when the Beatles broke up in1970 and was upset he changed alot before he died
John is saying that god is nothing more than a term we use to explain the things that are wrong in our lives not an actual deity.
Deep thinking. Even deeper than John intended I think. He’s not dissing everything he doesn’t believe in- he even mentions Bob Dylan “Zimmerman” and the Beatles.
The point is to believe in yourself before anything else. Be true to yourself first.
Paul McCartney George Harrison and ringo starr aren't dead weight they're some of the best artists of all time wym
It seems to me and kinda clear he's had enough of everything around him when he wrote it.
little known fact, the man playing piano is Billy Preston. The same dude who sang and wrote Nothing From Nothing
Little known fact... You are wrong! Only three musicians performed on that album... John Lennon, Klaus Voormann and Ringo Starr. John played piano on this song and all the songs with a piano part on the album.
Working class hero!! Amazing song by John strong lyrics.
Got to check out "Mother" from the same album! Very raw.... Very real! You may also appreciate his message in Instant Karma!
He’s just saying he don’t believe is false idols he only trust himself
I think the three other Beatles saw her as an intrusive person but that was John's true love
This is a great album! Listen to the song, love.
