- Tug of war is a real sport. And it’s hard. Once upon of time it was an official Olympic event, before it got cut for budget reasons. Today, a dedicated group of athletes still train and compete in the gritty sport on a global level. This isn’t the tug of war of your summer camp days.

He doesn't mean that it was more expensive than other sports. The Olympics can only host a finite number of sports. Obviously Tug of War was cut in favor of other sports.

I had match a couple of years ago, at a fair; my family against our friends family. It was a brutal workout and I really developed an appreciation for the sport. It's such a simple and elegant representation of sport.

I pull with Lincoln tug of war club from England and I must say that this sport is an all body sport, there is no rest during and little in between, stamina, endurance and strength! It is the will to not give up 💪

Tug of War is no joke and the injuries can be brutal.
I was at a Highland Games when I was little and they had all the professional competitors square off against a bunch festival-goers in a match. We're talking like 50 men a side. One guy on the festival side had the brilliant idea of wrapping the rope around his forearm, despite being explicitly told not to do that. As the match went on, the competitor side was clearly winning and they decided to end it with one mighty pull and just ran with it. They pulled so hard, most of the festival team fell over and the dude with the rope around his arm had his hard completely torn off.
