Thanks for the great resources. I appreciated the download photo.
You're very welcome, Deb!
LEARNED SO MUCH watching this Wonderful lesson! Just WOW ! New to CP's and after a false start this morning - I NEEDED this !!
You're so welcome! I'm glad it helped. 🙂
I know I just watched you show exactly how you did it, but I’ll never understand how it’s actually possible! Good stuff, thanks for sharing with us. :)
Philip Rogers thanks!
I am overwhelmed... wow... so professional ... I am a beginner and just ordered the Pastel Mat...but I will never be that good... amazing!
Thanks, Darlene VanDyke. You can do this! I started out as a beginner just like you and everyone else. 🙂
Art is a skill and as with learning any skill, it takes time and commitment.
If you start by drawing simple things and put the time in, then you will be “that good.”
The biggest problem I see from beginners is they try to run before they can walk by doing complex pieces right away and then get frustrated when they are not producing masterpieces. Then they give up. Start simple. Get a sketchbook and draw something like an apple and study how the light hits it and where the shadows are. Draw simple things in your sketchbook and then, after a month of that, redraw the first item you drew (such as an apple) and you will see improvement. It takes time.
I love watching these. Nice work. Your super pointy pencils are impressive as well.
jake t thanks!

Do you begin with oil based pencils first and then work towards the wax based or just use them interchangeably?
Hi Linda, most often I do start with the oil based pencils first, but later on I will just use them interchangeably with the wax based pencils. 🙂
Great work. I use pastelmat for pastels. I am afraid of using them as I have this image in my head that paper will eat the pencils up as it does with pastels.
BMJ Art thanks! You know it really doesn't do that (eat up the pencils) with colored pencils. Primarily because this paper has a very smooth tooth.
Hi when you use your solvent like zest it how many layers of pencil when you apply the solvent
Thank you for the question, @rtb03791 Before applying solvent on pastelmat, you need to have enough coverage to actually move the colored pencil. So I like to have at least 2 to 3 layers first. But, it is possible to use solvent even with a light layer of pencil on this surface. :)
@@Sharpenedartist thank you
Fantastic video! Do you seal your colored pencil on pastelmat with a fixative?
Hi Linda, thank you! And yes I do protect all my colored pencil work. 🙂
Great video. Thank you! Do you find using the colored pencils on the Pastelmat creates more or less dust/powder than Lux Archival? I found the dust to be a huge deterrent when using Lux Archival and amazed that you created such a beautiful portrait of the girl in the hat using that surface without constantly fighting the dust.
Hi Michelle, thank you! In my experience Luxarchival creates slightly more dust, or fall off, than Pastelmat. But Luxarchival is also far better at holding the pencil pigment than any other sand paper I’ve used. I hope that helps! :)
@@Sharpenedartist Thank you for taking the time to reply. I would love it if you would do a podcast on tips and tricks of using sanded paper and Pastelmat... :-)
