Fantastic - This is perhaps the best street performance I have ever witnessed. Reminiscent of Jean Luc Ponte's visceral fusion sound. This is in the city of Chester near Wales. Chester has perhaps the only double decker shopping plaza streets, with a second level up off the street within the buildings, balconies running all the way down the streets. jablesj comments - "They were made by the victorians so that rich people would not get wet while out in the rain."
The sound is unaltered from the original and was emancipated at great volume in this old town.
Ed uses the looper and pedals to great effect. There are no overdubs. Incredible he commanded this fantastic show all by himself, I stood enraptured with all the hair on my body standing on end, grin stretched wide. You can see where he looked up to see my ebullient smile just before he grins and kicks in the distortion. This has been a tremendous inspiration for me. I had never heard him or heard of him before this performance. Ed is awesome! I got some albums of his from the web since hearing this. I hope I can see him again one day.

I found it when I was in college, and it was so beautiful I cried. I'm mid-thirties now, and it still encourages me to have faith in the things we can do.

First saw this around 2008 or so. Loved it then. 10 years later, I was walking down York's Parliament Square looking for a busking pitch and heard an electric violin. First thing that popped into my head was "No way it's Ed Alleyne Johnson." Sure enough, it was.

Yeah man. I found this in 2008-2009... I was high as a kite when I found it, but even today in my sober days it still does it for me. A nice relaxing sound to reminisce on life with.

I discovered this in a rough time in my life and listened to it heavily for a few days back in 09. I'd recently had a break up with a long term girlfriend and had just broken off all contact with my family. I had decided to just leave the country on my own without money or a plan. This music has floated back into my mind over the years but I haven't been able to bring myself to play this again until now.

This was one of the most inspirational videos I had seen when I felt like the only person I knew trying to play solo and make loops of sound (those days with just a dl4) ...fast forward over a decade and a half, and my parents just text me from Chester to let me know that you were still out there doing your thing...they remembered me showing them this video so show what was possible to do with just loops and talent....they came back to say hi but you had gone for the day, but brilliant to know you are still out there looping up the world

i was in chester a few weeks ago with a friend and ed set up next to us outside the Central Perk and one quick coffee turned into 3 more along with a tuna sandwich and strawberry cheese cake, could have listened to that guy all day.
I had the fortune of listening to Ed live on the streets of Chester on two occasions and fell in love with him and still listen to his music. I now live in Australia but whenever I’m back in the UK I will make sure to go back to Chester and look out for him
My music teacher in high school showed me this video and I find myself coming back here to watch it every year or 2. Just as chilling as the first time I heard it.

I was traveling with my school in Oxford and we had 2 hours of free time class. I stayed the 2 hours to listen to him, it was 3 days ago. Unbelievable with my friends we hit hands and gave money, and he even said "thank you" hahaha! we were so happy!
Coming out of depression can feel like being reborn, as happy memories become available to you again and you remember what it's like to be at peace with the world. Hearing beautiful music for the first time then feels a bit overwhelming, almost as if the pleasure circuits in your brain have atrophied from lack of use. This video will always remind me of that experience back in 2008.

I played this song for my son while I was pregnant with him. I turned it on just now and, he recognized it. He would get so excited when I played it for him in the womb. When it would stop playing he would stop then I hit play again and, he would wiggle. Great memories. God bless you all.

@@itukuppoo4280 Yeah I think I've seen him a few times this year. I asked him once about his rig; he made his violin himself so I don't know what's in it, and as for his pedal board I think it was mostly BOSS pedals.
Disturbingly wonderful when heard on a cool autumn day, out in the street with a few tourists about.
480P was the best we had back then when I first watched this! Love it. This is one of the few BEST things on the internet still to this day.
I've had this video in my favorites since 2007 and have watched it hundreds of times enjoying the music, admiring the elegant & impressive town square and trying to make sense of the clips. I'd say this video sparked my first interest in traveling internationally from the US. In 2009 I got to travel internationally for the first time but couldn't convince my girlfriend at the time to go any more north than London. In 2013, I heard Ed was playing in York so when I booked my solo European trip, I specifically took a train from London to Edinburgh, Scotland so that I could take a day trip to York in hopes of seeing a live performance. Unfortunately, luck did not favor me and I could not find him there.
In 2015, I took another European trip and flew into Manchester from London. I then took a train to Chester and stayed at hostel for a few nights to give myself time to see if I could get a chance for a real life performance and to explore this town that I have pondered about since 2007. Well, luck was in my favor as the day before I was to leave, I found Ed playing about 100-200ft away from the location in this video.
I don't ever get-star truck, but I was like flabbergasted when I heard him playing and no one was stopping to listen. I hung out, sat on the curb and listened for about 45 minutes and called out songs for him to play until it started raining. I helped him get some of his stuff under cover from the rain and bought a CD that he graciously signed for me. Very kind and humble.
So it's super satisfying that I now know where this location is now, can recall where these cut scenes are from and can make sense of this busy yet still mesmerizing video.
It was great to see you and hear you again in Chester Ed. I am glad I was able buy a cd from you.

I am in Chester city centre and just met this guy! I used to watch this video when I was a kid. I feel like I just fulfilled a childhood dream.
I'm 34 now and I was in high was when I first watched this. Came back and watched this one evening when I was remembering old videos I l oved as a kid.I second that this should be preserved in a youtube museum.
Hope and peace fills in my heart when this blessing invades my body, making me believe in the little good things again! Because there is not only war and rape, blood and tears, there is also love and friendship, a hug, a shoulder to lean on!

This video really takes me back, I remeber watching it with my brother on the old family computer.
I remember watching this video numerous times over 12 years ago and being mesmerized by the music and intrigued by the buildings somewhat. When I was travelling Europe 10 years ago, I tried to catch a performance in York (heard he was playing there) but didn't get a chance. Fast forward to a few years ago, I tried again and found him in Chester. Funny how I finally know all those buildings in this video.
Seen him twice, York and Chester. I could not walk away either time. The man is a genius and.. busks..he has the music industry sussed...never compromised and he clocks most times when he has touched someones soul, He did me. This bloke doesn't need a concert hall. Just wish he put out a Vaughan W. variatiion sometime.

Hi. He certainly is. I "discovered" him in Chester a few days ago. I live not far away and see a lot of buskers, but somehow I've never come across this guy before! I've read a lot of the comments on various videos of Ed, and so many of them say he blew their mind! That's exactly the feeling I had. Mesmerising. I bought his latest CD "Pluto" spoke to the lovely lady who was with him, his wife(?). Had to drag myself away! I'll look out for him again that's for sure!

It must have been 15 to 20 years since I saw this guy busking in Chester and was transfixed. I'd heard of New Model Army but I didn't know who Ed was and that he was a member! It's fantastic that he's carved out a niche as a serious musician and an instrumentalist, and that he continues to release new recorded music.

Near 17 years I've been listening to this. Cognaut, the uploader...I don't know if you're still around. You've not uploaded a video in 10 years yourself. But I hope you know that this small moment in time, where you stood on the street and recorded this man playing violin has brought so much joy to so many people.
the pure magic he makes with that instrument just melts away the stress of the day... Id drop a few bills for such musical livation....
It's interesting to watch the people with no souls walking by as if it's going right over their heads and are oblivious, and those souls transfixed by the beauty they are hearing. Ed is a genius of the electric guitar.
I used to listen his music live on Chester city during our Sunday walk! So glad I found this video, brings me good memories there
I come back to this over a decade later. This and a Tenniscoats video filmed at a train station. Modern YT is just garbage. But thankfully some of the old genuine (no fake set up and money making schemes) uploads still survive. Beautiful.

I've just come back from a 250 mile round trip to see Ed performing in York. Bought his new album "Arpeggio" and had it on in the car on the way home. Brilliant!!! The last track "Journey to the East" is fantastic when driving down the motorway. I had this track on 5 times and didn't stop grinning till I got home!!!
