Jacob Rees Mogg opens a new front against the EU over their alleged "contempt for public opinion." Mr Rees-Mogg claims this is shown not only by the Commission repeatedly demanding referenda on EU treaties until they are approved, but by its role in the removal of elected leaders of countries such as Greece and Italy. The EU gives a voice to extremist parties such as Greece's New Dawn and France's Le Front National. Their successes, amplified in EU elections, have become a destabilising influence on member states' democracies.
MOTION: "THIS HOUSE BELIEVES THAT THE EU IS A THREAT TO DEMOCRACY"
Filmed on Thursday 24th October 2013
    ABOUT JACOB REES-MOGG:
Jacob William Rees-Mogg is a British Conservative Party politician, who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for North East Somerset since the 2010 general election. Rees-Mogg is in the Eurosceptic wing of the Conservative Party.

It's so important to note that this speech was 3 years before the referendum. Note his reference to the rise of extremism (left and right) back then, which people with short memories erroneously blame on Brexit

extremism rises with economic decline, and that's not related to EU. Then, most people couldn't help notice we're (back?) in a cold war. Again, Europe needs to decide whether it's a fourth, potentially mediating power or surrender to selfishness. It's easy to critizise a project (the EU in a concise and transparent form) which takes decades to evolve but already keeps us in (relative) peace for an unprecedented span of time. People who grew up with the benefits (single market, free movement, customer protection, data protection, kind of common'ish foreign policy, free mobile roaming) can of course not name them, because it's not their achievement - it's just there. Of course anyone can leave (other than Texas can not leave the USoA), but that party should at least have a plan to answer the most obvious implications.

It's because surprisingly enough The EU hid themselves well from our knowledge banks *taps head* i didn't even know The EU existed until Brexit began and i don't think a lot of people did either, unless you were a teacher or worked in a career heavily influenced by them... however we all see and feel their corruption and dictatorship considerably hasened and became worse since Brexit began even teachers don't so much... refer... to The EU when they parrot out their laws and regulations...
They just bark them at us but yet don't say where it's coming from i saw it the most when i went to my local college (corrupt local college full of Fraud) and i was bullied, shoved down, lied about to other people because they saw i didn't have a hefty bank account they could dip into and did anything to try and meet their agendas... but they try to bully and push you out once you're in the course not expecting to really work with you to give you the best Education... the same thing The EU does... i haven't been back to any college since i refuse to be put through that again... The Job Center is no better with and these i2i Work Programmes they put ppl on? dodgy as heck... tried to constantly get Free Labor out of us and still do to ppl and manipulated us in any way to then get us kicked off the job center or voluntarily leave ourselves, every where is just corrupted.
Once you get out there right now and at least 3/4 years before Brexit began you'd have witnessed it all yourselves how bad things have gotten and this extreme one sided behavior of all companies, all organizations... ireland and Scotland are trying to sabotage Brexit for their own agendas too trying to hold us hostage too, Ireland their border, Scotland for Independence (because they apparently hate us SO much and call US the snobs lol) it's just not what we need right now... but it's just spurred on by The EU and influenced by them too i hope Boris makes our exit as swift as possible so we can put all of this behind us.

Mogg really has the presence and charisma of one of the classic British Prime Ministers. If he were PM, I'd bet he'd put the Conservative party back on track and beyond that he' probably be more pragmatic than Nigel Farage, but also considerably more capable than David Cameron.

Lytrigian Thatcher was a loose Cannon in the 50s onward, but she was a cabinet Minister and she became PM. I'm just saying it has been known to happen. Probably won't happen with this Conservative government, but It has happend in the past. Maybe if Cameron gave someone like Mogg a cabinet position he could heal the divisions and friction between Cameron and his more rebellious back benchers, maybe give the party a better sense of unity. Either that or maybe if Cameron keeps his promise and resigns by 2020 then Mogg may run for leadership or the next Conservative PM may be somebody who appreciates him a little bit more. By 2020 anyway, Mogg will have been an MP for 10 years, that will probably give him some credentials for at least being a cabinet minister in a few years time.

Thank you Mr Rees-Mogg for highlighting the lack of democracy in the EU whereas here in the UK we prize it very highly although we don’t actually elect the Head of State (that’s done on hereditary), we don’t elect anyone in the second chamber, we don’t elect the Prime Minister (that’s an MP only vote from only one party) and unless you vote for the winning candidate in a general election, your vote’s ignored. Why can’t the EU be as good as the UK?

    • @alexbarlow1921
      @alexbarlow1921 2 года назад

Head of state has no power realistically speaking that can be shown my the Miller 2 case but judging by your comment you probably don’t know what that is so that point is irrelevant, second chamber appointees need to be unelected so that they can make unpopular decisions and their powers are heavily limited by the parliament acts and Salisbury convention, and the winning candidate question is not true either as shown by 2017 ad 2010 general elections where there had to be power sharing agreements because of unhappiness manifested by previous governments so ill think you’ll find that the UK is far more democratic than the EU will ever be.

Theres absolutely zero chance of that within the eu. No vote, no voice over the eu commission/councils that have the power over the eu public. 🇬🇧

He's absolutely right, and I'm from Malta, the country Mr. Rees-Mogg has just denounced as having more power proportionately in their European vote than the British. I used the same argument in my media writings before Malta's referendum in 2004, so I can't blame him. His argument is sound. If you look at the proportionate vote, there is a real imbalance all round, which means that, whichever way you look at it, whether it's Britain having 29 votes representing their millions of voters, or Malta having 6 votes representing their half a million voters, there is still no sovereignty for individual countries. Can you see our 6 votes making a dent when it comes to preventing a law from being enacted? Hardly. Ergo, when there is no equal voting power in the European Parliament, only the countries with the majority of votes have the true power. The result is no true democracy for individual states.

If you don't understand how China is now a world threat to the western stability, that Russia is too, and in some time India and others will come to the table, you are delusional.
The world works in a bock logic today, either for defense or commerce. There is no way to defend ourselves if we don't act as one, as a roman legion, who destroyed all the tribes that lived separately and only united for war, and didn't have a monolithic quick acting structure. This is no different.
You stupidly believe the British liked each other through history, which is nonsense; they got imposed that collective identity to be able to operate in the world (and only recently, in the last decades that identity started to stabilize).

Also because he is a "snob" from your point of view, you discarded what he said?
That's another thing that proves how biased and brainwashed you are my friend.
The problem is that the ignorance you show is now a days a very big problem. And the people that think like you do, don't have the ability to accept when they're wrong. They will get mad and try to silence opinions with fallacies and offenses.
It's worrying how many people like you are around, and as history has proven, is people like this, that "unite as one" to be loud and destroy the rights and freedoms of others who simply think for themselves.
I hope you see how bad your argument was (though I really doubt it).
Open your eyes and see the problems we all have in front of us. Politics and the government are not to trust 100%, take responsibility of your own and when everyone is fit to respond tho himself, then Union will come naturally and not by force, because what you're defending is a totalitarian regime, where it's assumed that different people from different cultures, are the same and have to think alike in order to be "safe and protected".

@Elvis Has left the building The epitome of populism and stupidity. This narrow minded snob doesn't understand that we don't unite in Europe for democracy, as we don't unite among ourselves in our countries, cities or towns because we want it; we do it for protection and prosperity.
The EU is no different. Ignorant and dangerous ideas from the conception to the execution; that is why this guy and his followers are considered idiots everywhere and nobody takes him seriously (except the resented working class).

@@NeonVisual The EU have vaccinated more people and have given more second doses to elders than the UK and they are the largest exporters of vaccines in the world. What makes you think a third wave wont come here? more than half of the population still hasn't had the vaccine, the virus still spreads, watch the next month. The whole world needs to be on board with this because if a new strain that can over come the vaccine emerges else where in the world and makes it's way to vaccinated countries, then we're back at square one. The UK is an example of how not to deal with the pandemic (putting aside the vaccine roll out, which has gone very well and is irrelevant of in/out of the EU), late lockdowns even with prior warnings, re-opening too early twice, one of the highest death rates in the world and one of the highest death numbers in the world, lets not even go into the shady internal politics from PPE contracts to Cummins...

@@gitanonumero1983 one would hope so, they are 27 countries and should have vaccinated 27 times the amount the Uk has. Instead they are still suck in single digit percentages of the population, while the UK has given the first dose to more than half of the adult population, and a further 15 percent of the most at risk their 2nd dose. Consiquently the EU is heading into a 3rd wave while we are beginning to lift restrictions to get back to normal. The EU is a failure, a bully with blood on their hands. We should never have offered them doses of our vaccine, they just threw it back in our faces and now try to steal it from us by blocking export. We had 100m doses exclusivity due to us financing and developing it in Oxford. Once those doses are delivered the EU contract is next in line to be fulfilled. Stealing Dr the UK will have consiquences.

140k+ dead in the UK from Covid. Worst in Europe never mind the EU. Boris Johnson has managed that pandemic as well as he managed to get that bridge built across the Thames when he was Mayor. How much was spent on it again- 50+ million quid? 🥺

Well said. Nicely argued. Jacob is indeed an honourable man, and deserves much greater influence. I would like to see him in a key government position. Quite frankly he would make a marvellous leader of the Conservative party. The EU is a disgraceful organisation in my opinion. It has become far too large and complex. It is not just a threat to democracy its killed democracy.

+Josh Charlie If it ain't broke-don't fix it! We went through all this with the SNP at the Scottish referendum-we slapped them down, and we will do the same to BREXIT! You gamble with your future if you want, but count me out, thanks.

Guy is a complete liar. For example Ireland was not made to vote again until the EU got the right result. 2 referendums were voted against for various reasons and on both occasions negotiated with the EU and got some terms changed and 2 new referendums were put to the Irish people and they were passed. That’s pure democracy and not undemocratic like he claims.
