Jacob Rees Mogg opens a new front against the EU over their alleged "contempt for public opinion." Mr Rees-Mogg claims this is shown not only by the Commission repeatedly demanding referenda on EU treaties until they are approved, but by its role in the removal of elected leaders of countries such as Greece and Italy. The EU gives a voice to extremist parties such as Greece's New Dawn and France's Le Front National. Their successes, amplified in EU elections, have become a destabilising influence on member states' democracies.
MOTION: "THIS HOUSE BELIEVES THAT THE EU IS A THREAT TO DEMOCRACY"
Filmed on Thursday 24th October 2013
ABOUT JACOB REES-MOGG:
Jacob William Rees-Mogg is a British Conservative Party politician, who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for North East Somerset since the 2010 general election. Rees-Mogg is in the Eurosceptic wing of the Conservative Party.

It's so important to note that this speech was 3 years before the referendum. Note his reference to the rise of extremism (left and right) back then, which people with short memories erroneously blame on Brexit
Gosh you're spot on with that
extremism rises with economic decline, and that's not related to EU. Then, most people couldn't help notice we're (back?) in a cold war. Again, Europe needs to decide whether it's a fourth, potentially mediating power or surrender to selfishness. It's easy to critizise a project (the EU in a concise and transparent form) which takes decades to evolve but already keeps us in (relative) peace for an unprecedented span of time. People who grew up with the benefits (single market, free movement, customer protection, data protection, kind of common'ish foreign policy, free mobile roaming) can of course not name them, because it's not their achievement - it's just there. Of course anyone can leave (other than Texas can not leave the USoA), but that party should at least have a plan to answer the most obvious implications.
@moonbeam I think that by supporting Brexit he rather refuted that charge. Boris. by contrast, waited till the last moment.
rees mogg is right
It's because surprisingly enough The EU hid themselves well from our knowledge banks *taps head* i didn't even know The EU existed until Brexit began and i don't think a lot of people did either, unless you were a teacher or worked in a career heavily influenced by them... however we all see and feel their corruption and dictatorship considerably hasened and became worse since Brexit began even teachers don't so much... refer... to The EU when they parrot out their laws and regulations...
They just bark them at us but yet don't say where it's coming from i saw it the most when i went to my local college (corrupt local college full of Fraud) and i was bullied, shoved down, lied about to other people because they saw i didn't have a hefty bank account they could dip into and did anything to try and meet their agendas... but they try to bully and push you out once you're in the course not expecting to really work with you to give you the best Education... the same thing The EU does... i haven't been back to any college since i refuse to be put through that again... The Job Center is no better with and these i2i Work Programmes they put ppl on? dodgy as heck... tried to constantly get Free Labor out of us and still do to ppl and manipulated us in any way to then get us kicked off the job center or voluntarily leave ourselves, every where is just corrupted.
Once you get out there right now and at least 3/4 years before Brexit began you'd have witnessed it all yourselves how bad things have gotten and this extreme one sided behavior of all companies, all organizations... ireland and Scotland are trying to sabotage Brexit for their own agendas too trying to hold us hostage too, Ireland their border, Scotland for Independence (because they apparently hate us SO much and call US the snobs lol) it's just not what we need right now... but it's just spurred on by The EU and influenced by them too i hope Boris makes our exit as swift as possible so we can put all of this behind us.
I always thought Mr Mogg was just a posh git, but no more! I have watched a lot of his speeches (especially on the eu) on RUclips and I agree with what he says about the corrupt eu. To me he seems like a true British patriot (unlike the majority of our politicians) and a real honest gentleman.

He said Brexit would run smoothly and there'd be no traffic problems. Didn't turn out so well for him.
Definitely one of the best orators getting about. I am so pleased that he is on the side of Leave.
I can almost forgive him for being a rich, posh Tory for that fact alone.
Thank God the remainers don't have a Mogg. Mind you, no one with a little knowledge of history, politics and economics would ever honestly argue for the EU.
General Crisis Nothing wrong with being rich or posh, you stupid class warrior. Toryism you're free to disagree with, but having different opinions to you isn't a crime.
. I'was born poor I can't help that We always need a clever good leader to take us further for all of us we are blessed to have him
You laughable servile failure.
Mogg really has the presence and charisma of one of the classic British Prime Ministers. If he were PM, I'd bet he'd put the Conservative party back on track and beyond that he' probably be more pragmatic than Nigel Farage, but also considerably more capable than David Cameron.
Godzilla52 The problem is, of course, that he will never be prime minister because he looks old fashioned, posh and a typical ex-public schoolboy.. Never mind that he is immensely bright, honourable and capable - he looks "wrong" and since style over substance is far more important these days, he stands no chance.. Pity really..
Felix Deer I'm just saying that back in the days of Thatcher and Major, they at least valued talent in their cabinet. If Mogg ran and won in 1993, something tells me that Major would have acknowledged his talents.
Felix Deer The other reason is that he's far too much of an uncontrollable loose cannon. Not exactly the person to "play ball" and get along...
Lytrigian Thatcher was a loose Cannon in the 50s onward, but she was a cabinet Minister and she became PM. I'm just saying it has been known to happen. Probably won't happen with this Conservative government, but It has happend in the past. Maybe if Cameron gave someone like Mogg a cabinet position he could heal the divisions and friction between Cameron and his more rebellious back benchers, maybe give the party a better sense of unity. Either that or maybe if Cameron keeps his promise and resigns by 2020 then Mogg may run for leadership or the next Conservative PM may be somebody who appreciates him a little bit more. By 2020 anyway, Mogg will have been an MP for 10 years, that will probably give him some credentials for at least being a cabinet minister in a few years time.
Godzilla52 He'd get my vote, but the problem is like the man says he's a toff, and no toff can be considered good for the country these days, bloody left
I just love the Mogg ! A remarkable person.
He’s a dishonest and lazy bully.
Thank you Mr Rees-Mogg for highlighting the lack of democracy in the EU whereas here in the UK we prize it very highly although we don’t actually elect the Head of State (that’s done on hereditary), we don’t elect anyone in the second chamber, we don’t elect the Prime Minister (that’s an MP only vote from only one party) and unless you vote for the winning candidate in a general election, your vote’s ignored. Why can’t the EU be as good as the UK?
Head of state has no power realistically speaking that can be shown my the Miller 2 case but judging by your comment you probably don’t know what that is so that point is irrelevant, second chamber appointees need to be unelected so that they can make unpopular decisions and their powers are heavily limited by the parliament acts and Salisbury convention, and the winning candidate question is not true either as shown by 2017 ad 2010 general elections where there had to be power sharing agreements because of unhappiness manifested by previous governments so ill think you’ll find that the UK is far more democratic than the EU will ever be.
if it didnt happen than this than the party who owned London and Manchester would keep wining the elections
Excellent point
The bog difference is that within the UK the electorate do get to choose the party (with their policies) by vote. A voice for the public to make change & a voice over those that rule over them. Theres absolutely zero chance of that within the eu. No vote, no voice over the eu commission/councils that have the power over the eu public. 🇬🇧
In America, your average Kentuckian can hardly stomach the idea of a court in Washington telling him how to run his own store; I can't begin to fathom how we might react to a wholly foreign entity dictating policy to us. Is Britain sovereign or isn't it?
No, but it will be again.

He's a staunch Catholic and he is entitled to hold his own private views. He doesn't profess to inflict them on anyone else. Again, why is that worth bringing up in an EU debate? Are you trying to imply that Eurosceptics are all anti-abortion, anti-gay? Because that's madness.

Then I sat and watched a city brought to its knees, once famous shipyards closed, pits closed, woman cueing in the street for food, zero jobs. And if there was a job 1000 men stood in line to fill it, this is a tiny piece of what happened as she sold our once proud nation down the proverbial creek without a paddle. And you off handedly call us all “ new class” fuck right off son.

He embodies everything that is terrible about lovely England. What an arrogance, what a lack of real grace and compassion... earned his fortune in the terrible financial system: that's how these people do it - no morale, and then later talk about ideals etc. Repugnant.
He's absolutely right, and I'm from Malta, the country Mr. Rees-Mogg has just denounced as having more power proportionately in their European vote than the British. I used the same argument in my media writings before Malta's referendum in 2004, so I can't blame him. His argument is sound. If you look at the proportionate vote, there is a real imbalance all round, which means that, whichever way you look at it, whether it's Britain having 29 votes representing their millions of voters, or Malta having 6 votes representing their half a million voters, there is still no sovereignty for individual countries. Can you see our 6 votes making a dent when it comes to preventing a law from being enacted? Hardly. Ergo, when there is no equal voting power in the European Parliament, only the countries with the majority of votes have the true power. The result is no true democracy for individual states.
not to mention the 100x more laws and regulations for all aspects from all countries.. every little detail. every daydream the bureaucrats have and feel like writing laws for everyone else about. it makes life for businesspeople incredibly hard and inevitably leads to poverty on a european scale..

The simple truth is, do you value democracy?
Primegaming Because they dont understand it and they dont bother to figure it out. They listen to the loudest voice.
Primegaming
The simple answer is......
Yes.
Sadly, true democracy is mob mentality.
@Primegaming The epitome of populism and stupidity. This narrow minded snob doesn't understand that we don't unite in Europe for democracy, as we don't unite among ourselves in our countries, cities or towns because we want it; we do it for protection and prosperity.
If you don't understand how China is now a world threat to the western stability, that Russia is too, and in some time India and others will come to the table, you are delusional.
The world works in a bock logic today, either for defense or commerce. There is no way to defend ourselves if we don't act as one, as a roman legion, who destroyed all the tribes that lived separately and only united for war, and didn't have a monolithic quick acting structure. This is no different.
You stupidly believe the British liked each other through history, which is nonsense; they got imposed that collective identity to be able to operate in the world (and only recently, in the last decades that identity started to stabilize).
The EU is no different. Ignorant and dangerous ideas from the conception to the execution; that is why this guy and his followers are considered idiots everywhere and nobody takes him seriously (except the resented working class).
@Christian Proust
Man, you're so brainwashed that is sad.
For you a little quote from Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
You have been told that you have to give away your rights, in order to be safe. But you are just walking blind into an abyss.
Also because he is a "snob" from your point of view, you discarded what he said?
That's another thing that proves how biased and brainwashed you are my friend.
The problem is that the ignorance you show is now a days a very big problem. And the people that think like you do, don't have the ability to accept when they're wrong. They will get mad and try to silence opinions with fallacies and offenses.
It's worrying how many people like you are around, and as history has proven, is people like this, that "unite as one" to be loud and destroy the rights and freedoms of others who simply think for themselves.
I hope you see how bad your argument was (though I really doubt it).
Open your eyes and see the problems we all have in front of us. Politics and the government are not to trust 100%, take responsibility of your own and when everyone is fit to respond tho himself, then Union will come naturally and not by force, because what you're defending is a totalitarian regime, where it's assumed that different people from different cultures, are the same and have to think alike in order to be "safe and protected".
I hope you realize how wrong is that. For the snob and for the poor.
Just read. I'm Latvian, last 10 years I live in UK. And you know why I'm in UK... In 2004 Latvia become EU member, and from 2005, They close all, yes ALL. hes said before, he prefers to be a backbencher so he can say what he wants to say
Because the slack jawed masses who live for East Enders, Cori and the other trash TV will call him out of touch. They prefer to be governed by those orange, buffoons from TOWIE and the likes of BoJo because people in the UK don't want clever politicians, they want "likable" ones
This man makes so much more sense, with much more authenticity than every other British politician I have heard.... back this man, leave the EU and celebrate Freedom Day in March... oh re food shortages I laugh.... get it from us in Australia or mates in New Zealand....change your import requirements (our food is safe and great). I also remember my dad telling me he lived on rations (i.e. one egg a week etc etc) when need be for freedom. Toughen up a bit - please!

That is for Andy
@IEat Racists yep that is on the button or as we say the truth

@Generic Human Hmmm, well, if it's our class or Oz's lack of it I know which I'd prefer.
He probably has more clout than the Prime Minister.
Everyone knows that it's Dominic who controls the country, and JRM's ability to speak well, hides the fact that he isn't particularly bright.
@Qwfwq66 Hear hear!
@Qwfwq66 Cummings is a devilishly intelligent man, his professors at Oxford have always described him as a genius, and his handling of the vote leave campaign was absolutely brilliant.
@Qwfwq66 So that negates the positive comments made, by the worlds leading intellectuals, in regards to his intellect?
@Qwfwq66 You're very strange.
I'm in the United States. I just discovered Mogg today. I really like this gentleman. : )
No. No hes not
This may be the most English man I've ever seen.
Tony Benn and he would have stood shoulder to shoulder in this fight, even though Benn was a socialist.
Look up Sir Roger Scruton
Then you clearly haven't seen any English men, have you?
It's an act.
Have you been to england
im from sheffield and hate elites with all my heart (born shefield 1981 i cant help it) but i like this guy cus he has dignity and honour and tells it straight.
dean chetty I'm from Sheffield, born 1983. Don't hate "elites", can help it, just judge each man on the content of his/her character, not on his/her perceived wealth. Mr Mogg is a good egg.
elites are in the trap too. they were born where they were born same as everyone else and raised the way they were raised by "the blind leading the blind". any christian knows ( should know lol ) that their saviour says to pray for ur enemy or at least love thy neighbor. remember the golden rule, as u sow, so shall u reap ( karma ) is a law, unlike man made legislation. my point for u being any strong emotion ( hate ) always returns to its originator. as a commonly used saying states, u catch more flys with honey than vinegar x
I have the impression that many Lefties are connected with these Elites...

How do YOU define 'dignity', and 'honour'?
Dignity and honour belongs beside other distent words to christian thinking and doing.
Man transforms to a quite another person with a heart on another level...
J.R. Mogg realy make’s a strong case for BREXIT. 👍
This is so much more captivating than American politics! 🇺🇸❤️💙🇬🇧

Jacob is one of the few Cons I respect and admire. He and Daniel Hannan are true conservatives not that fraud Cameron.
Daniel Hannan is a vile little shit who wants to see the NHS abolished. Just so you know
David Cameron was absolutely terrible. He seemed more like a labour prime minister than a conservative PM.
"Nemo judex in causa sua" is a Latin phrase that means, literally, "no-one is judge in his own cause."
It is a principle of natural justice that no person can judge a case in which they have an interest.
JRM, he's clever, as sharp as a razor and witty with it. A top chap! (y)
Watching this in April 2020, and feeling blessed that we live in extraordinary times! This was even before the word 'BREXIT' was ever heard.
One day this man will be Prime Minister. Can't wait.
I hope not. Thats when Irish start to hate the English again, fierce strong stink of Cromwell off him. The Irish example is wrong might i add. The treaty was changed to support national vote and only then did we pass the Lisbon treaty.
Sure he will..... 😂

Elvis Has left the building I don't like the Tories either but like you I really like this guy. Right now he may well be Britain's last hope.
@Elvis Has left the building The epitome of populism and stupidity.
@josh widdicombe & the truth always comes from socialists of course, you credulous gullible fool. Josef Goebbels said; "Propaganda works best, when the people being manipulated, truly believe that they are acting of their own free will". Hitler said; "The people are stupid. Tell them a big enough lie often enough, & they will accept it as the truth". 40 years of lies & Propaganda paid for out of our own money into schools & universities to indoctrinate the young & naive, before their critical faculties are capable of dismissing it, has resulted in 16.1 million credulous people falling for the lies & Propaganda of remain hook line & sinker. Guy is a complete liar.
