Mr. Anonymous don't die because that will affect people because they will sink into there thoughts and will think "I could have prevented this" and then depression, stress comes up as necessary especially family members and people who were close to you. You have to overcome thoughts and be strong and fight through because your thoughts can get to you and that point the thoughts are the real problem. I suggest to yell out your problems and emotions when you alone , it helps. I love you even though I don't know you :) stay strong

My first therapy appointments have been similar. They ask, "what brings you in today?" And the first time, I didn't know how to say a lot so they just asked who I lived with, if I was in school, do I have brothers and sisters, am I working, was I sleeping well...They also just went over things like confidentiality, how I could schedule future appointments and how long appointments lasted. It took the first 2-3 sessions for them to get my full story.

@miki bear the only time they would do that is if you're actively suicidal or tell them you have a plan to end your life. I told my therapist about my suicidal thoughts and did not get locked up 😉

    • @yeahok3233
      @yeahok3233 4 года назад +10

miki bear I go to my first therapy session tomorrow and they are required to say if you harm yourself or others or if you are planning to commit suicide which is why I’m not saying it :). And I was doing research and basically if you admit to planning suicide or self harming they will basically be like “go to a psychiatric center until ur mentally stable” I’m pretty sure ur not required to go but my mom would obviously bring me to a psych place and my family would be furious with me and I’m probably gonna be up all night planning what to say for my therapy session.
Ok update: I looked at it again and they are definitely required to say if u repeatedly self harm or are a threat to your own life or others and can recommend hospitalization

I first went to therapy on my fiftieth birthday, and I knew exactly what I wanted to talk about. My mother had died, and I had felt nothing about it-no emotion, nothing. It was just another day. She had not been a bad mom, but I had been a bad son. My best friend had been encouraging me to go for months, and I finally did and began a new stage of my journey. I can say that I am somewhat better now, but not so much that I don't need therapy. Because of an insurance change three years ago, I could no longer afford to go and was going to quit, but my therapist knew that I was not ready for that, so she insisted on seeing me pro bono after that. And so, I continue to see her without paying, but I always make sure to give back by sharing things that she has been able to use to help other patients. Cheers, Russ

One of the best things my therapist did when I was still going to see her in university was not making the conversation one sided. It was so good feeling like I was just talking to someone in a conversation rather than just sitting there talking with minimal feedback (which was how I assumed it would be). Made me open up so much easier than if I felt like I was in more of a "clinical" setting (if that makes sense lol)
I miss it so much, finding another therapist like that (with that kind of natural rapport and familiarity) has been really difficult so far :/.

  • @MsMsmak

There is no way I would start with a therapist like that. Before I started working with my therapist, I put together a list of 5 potential therapists, and I went and interviewed them all; asking them questions about their backgrounds, how they work, what they specialized in, etc, and most importantly, got a sense of their personaliltys. Then I chose the one I ended up with. I would absolutely NOT talk about my issues until I was sure that I was comfortable with my choice as to WHO I was going to work with.

My therapist had a list of questions for me. It was all general stuff to get to know me. We addressed the big one “why are you here?” at the beginning but didn’t address any of my issues yet. She just wanted to get to know me as a person. Psychologically speaking, that’s the best way to build trust and get someone to like you…ask them questions about themselves and let them talk about themselves.

I think the "coffee and chat" set up is a really good one. It's kind of how I try to structure my videos. Sharing my opinion on something I've been thinking about recently and leaving it open to viewers to join the conversation. But that's also been my biggest struggle is getting viewers to communicate with me so we can have those conversations.
I'm planning to go back to therapy, have been for a while but haven't had the motivation to look for a therapist and do something about it. I really need to get on that.

I've been seeing my therapist for about a year and whenever she brings something up that. I don't want to talk about (usually self harm related) I tell her that I don't want to talk about it and then she asks why and try's to weasel the information out of me and we end up talking about it. Then after session I feel really bad and kinda upset that she didn't respect the fact that j didn't want to talk about it

Hope you have someone that makes you comfortable. You did say your therapist weaseled stuff out of you so that seems like a negative experience. The goal of therapy is to get persons to open up and share so that the therapist can see what methods need to be applied etc but if you were not comfortable talking about certain issues, as Kati says in her video here, your therapy, your pace

I've been in therapy for a long time (7 years) and I still sometimes don't know where to start. Like Kati said, it's normal! A few years ago, I found that writing things down for my therapist before my appointment would often help, especially with the harder topics. I might just make a list with bullet points, or it might be more like a formal letter saying hey, here's what's going on. And in those situations, I give them to my therapist at the beginning of our session to let her read it, and we go from there. And it's not always big things I write down...it might be, I had a fight with a friend or I'm feeling more anxious than usual.

Sometimes giving a therapist an idea what your struggles are before an appointment can give them a direction how they can lead you in the 1St session.

The first time I went to therapy I stayed in silence the whole 50 mins.
The second time I brought my sister with me so she could "help" me speak my mind out loud (I used to completely rely on her and I had no sense of self).
The third time my whole family came with me to the therapist's.
Then I decided to quit, because I didn't like how deep it was getting AND I felt guilty for the amount of money that my dad had to pay every session. I was very uncomfortable. But at that time, I didn't know how to communicate my feelings and I would always avoid difficult situations.
Thinking about it now, I had so much trauma without realizing... I didn't even know WHY I was there in the first place, I just felt like something was wrong. If I just had the guts to NOT quit 🙃

hey Kati thank you so much for your videos, they have changed my life.
I was going to ask you about starting therapy, as I have booked an appointment with a therapist for next week.
I have incredible lows that are followed closely by outbursts of positivity and confidence...
I only feel I need therapy and help when I am in my low moods, but this week I am feeling confident and impenetrable, as if I don't really need therapy.
I'm committing to it because the lows are so destructive, but my question is how can I properly portay to my therapist how terrible I feel during the lows when my appointment occurs in an elevated state?
thank you for inspiring me to seek help. you're a rock star

My first appointment with my therapist she kinda told me a little about herself to kinda break the ice and then we just kinda takes about how my relationships are and then the next time she kinda gave me a topic and said tell me about this instead of a direct question

Do you have any tips on adjusting to different situations? I just began college this semester and it's not going well. I know I need an education, but I hate having a roommate and I want to go home.

I think she'll have good, and probably better advice than me, but I think knowing why you're there in the first place is really useful. Once you have your goal and you know what you want out of life in general, you see the big picture and it just gives you a new perspective. I struggled with that too, and I'm now in college. That's what helps me, just remembering why I'm there in the first place. This is coming from someone who gets panic attacks, so trust me I know how it can be.

I felt the same way when I first started college! I gave it some time and tried my best to reach out and make friends on campus and in online communities! Maybe you could look into having a single room for the next semester if your university offers them! It would give you move privacy and time to yourself while also allowing for you to challenge yourself and meet new people!

If your roommate is your only problem with college, I think you should tough it out. It will teach you valuable lessons about getting along with people even if you don't want to, and learning from others in general. Changes are, too, you're probably going to have to be a roommate sometime when you get older if you can't afford a full rent payment.

Hii, thanks for your all amazing videos. I love these Q and A, I was wondering if you also could make some videos for Counsellors, most of the videos are for clients which is perfect, but I would highly appreciate if you could come up with some videos for Counsellors, like those that we can find in 5Min therapy in RUclips, and they are very good I am a counselor and I would love to know your tips for Counsellors. :) Good luck

I’ve been in and out of therapy a couple times.. and pretty much the first appointments were just an ‘intro’ on my life. Last time I had a fist session i remember a screen saying basic things about me like parents are divorced, has autism other things etc. and they pretty much asked me about all that. Oh and I’m 16 btw

Hey Kati.Love your new haircut;same one I got when returned home from Barcelona.
Need some advice...How can I tell my relatives their arguing and cursing at each other makes me feel bad and ill with anxiety and depression? They don't seem to care nor understand although I've asked them to stop it before.
I need some feedback about this because I feel like I'm alone struggling with all their drama and stuck in the middle of it.
    Thank you.
