    The fact that people want to talk to you about their problems every time you just mention what you do, just made me think how much we need each other and how much we crave for someone to listen.

    Maybe people don't realize that being a therapist is your job, and maybe you love it, but you are not just a therapist, you are much more than that, you are a whole complex human being! So it is completely normal if you want to be among people without being their therapist !!!

      I agree.
      It’s rather quite simple. Example, if you’re an accountant or financial advisor at your job. And then at the end of the day, you leave the office to go home or hang out with your friends at a party, you don’t want people to expect you to do their finances for them simply because it’s what you do for a job. You’re there at the party to enjoy, not to work.

    I totally relate to dreading the "what do you do for a living?" lol. As a social worker, I get a lot of "Wow, I couldn't do your job", and a lot of "I'm really worried about a kid because of xyz, should I report it to child services?" My state has mandatory reporting for all people over 18, so usually the answer is yes.
    And then my pharmacist husband gets all the medical questions and strange rashes shown to him at parties.

    Also for music therapists the response from other people is totally different... mostly because people don’t realize that it’s a real thing. So we get “oh! What’s that?” Most people think we just sing to people...😑 My go to answer is “I’m a trained therapist and a trained musician and I studied methods on incorporating the two”

    To be honest, I don't think I could do all of it within the deadlines because I am not neurotypical. I wouldn't be able to do full time work and then internships on the side. That is insane. How sad that such a valuable career is so incredibly difficult. On top of that, I can't imagine putting that many years of work to earn so little. Those who can endure are definitely incredible and I am so thankful for those of you that do this line of work- but my heart aches that it is this complicated and that what you earn as a therapist is so meager compared to the work put it. Oi.

    • @juliejealousy
      @juliejealousy 6 лет назад +21

      Rachel Cyders I’m not neurotypical and I’m in school to be a counselor. I live in a different state though. It’s possible. I know that you can complete my grad program in 5 years but full time is 2. And then you need the 3000 hours within 8 years, which is what I read recently. I think it’s possible to do it part time and with boundaries so you can care for your mental health, but that’s just my opinion. I used to be in a way worse place with my mental health and wouldn’t be able to handle it but I’m in a better place now. I hope that things get better for you over time. 💕

      @kitty_rae21 6 лет назад +7

      Kati Morton Yes, I completely agree. I don't know how, but I deeply hope it changes someday. My interests and skills are both in mental health and teaching, and it's been difficult to make any forwards motion knowing the financial situation either paths would put me into. I don't care to be rich, but I do long to be financially stable enough to support a family of my own someday. I know it's not impossible, but the lack of security freezes me up.

    • @juliejealousy
      @juliejealousy 6 лет назад +4

      Rachel Cyders well my mom is a teacher and she struggles with an anxiety disorder. I actually work in a school as a teacher’s aide and have managed but yes, unfortunately it doesn’t pay well. I think if you truly love something you should strive to do it, but at your own pace of course. It’s nice that a lot of schools offer part time programs for that reason. The teaching route in the states from what I know is a bit easier because the masters program is a lot shorter and you need way less internship hours to become a teacher.

It weird to say this because you guys are often strangers, but you guys also give off the vibe that makes people feel safe and that you can be trusted. I think that’s why people are so incline to tell you about their problems.

    I am not a therapist. Heck, I'm not always the healthiest and need a therapist, but my PTSD makes me quiet and more of a listener than than a talker. This causes people tell me things I am not always able to deal with. I think with the high-speed lifestyle so many people live under, when they find someone who listens, they use that opportunity. That may be why even when you don't tell someone you are a therapist, they are still telling you things. You make a good listener even when not in therapy mode. It may be a bad hypothesis, but it has been something I have noticed around me for years as well.

    There is so much greatness in this video. And seeing the journey that you have taken to get to where you are Kati, is so inspiring on one hand and fascinating on the other. Also gives us a good reminder on so many different levels with a gentle challenge too.
    With all that you had to learn, take in and have experienced over the years, what would you say are the top few things you have learnt about yourself? What have your preferred learning styles been?
    I love that you have a transparency and care that highlights your passion oozing through all you do. Thanks for being you!

    I just found your channel in search of knowing the difference between counseling and therapy is (saw the difference in another video) and your clarity and explanations are amazing! I’m currently deciding on what path I should take in schooling and you have given me good insight, thank you.
    Also, I’m interested in knowing what podcasts you tune into! 🙂

    I really appreciate all the videos you post! I found you today because as a senior about to graduate with a bachelors in psychology... I was freaking out! I am about to apply for grad school and don't know what the right path is to take so all your videos are super helpful please keep posting. I wish they would teach me career paths for psych at my university!!

    Thank you for this video, Kati. I've mulled taking this path for sometime. I've always been someone that people seem to find easy to talk to and find some sort of non-judgmental comfort in and after a friend of mine recently told me I provided some sort of "profound" peace and calm during a very turbulent time in her life and she thanked me, I realized maybe I should go back to school for something in this field but I'm still unsure about exactly what I want to do here.

    I absolutely LOVE your videos Kati....I like when you said "I'm just like you." Most importantly, I can relate in reference to not always feeling or being in Therapist mode, sometimes you just want to unwind and relax, therefore creating your own boundaries are great in regards to knowing just what you can handle. Since I begin telling people that I am in a Clinical Mental Health Program, I'll have random strangers pour their whole life story out to me, eventhough this is my passion, it can get uncomfortable, because one I'm not fully trained and two it may be a day where I am actually trying to just unwind , eventhough I LOVE helping people, were human 2. Thank you Kati for sharing your expertise with us all, please keep them coming:) I would love for you to add a video demonstrating how to do an assessment for a client (involving diagnoses, recommendations to the client) and and the whole process soon!

    I was seeing a therapist at a community clinic who in her spare time worked (for tips only) in a restaurant owned by friends. She worked there to help the restaurant get by; she didn’t seriously need the income.
    But it was her second job, and as I was attending a group luncheon that started 15 minutes after my therapy session ended, there she was, unexpectedly, filling my water glass. No weirder experience in my life than her pouring water for me just 15 minutes after I poured my innermost self out to her!

    Hi Kati!
    First of all congratulations for passing all your licensing exams and becoming a therapist! I really admire your perseverence :) I'm also on this similar road now, just started working as an "intern" type therapist. I'm working in Hungary but I can say it's pretty similar than over there... Lots and lots of years of learning and gaining experience and working loads of side jobs to actually make money :D But it's very encouraging to see you do what you like and so well, but at the same time being honest about the rocky parts of this road.
    Thank you for your videos! Keep them coming :)

    Thanks Kati.. Hearing the 5 year internship part time was very encouraging to me. My goal is to be a clinical social worker (particularly play and creative arts focus). I'm still in my BSW and have to go part time .. I love it and it seems like school is going to take forever. I have to wait 2 years of full time work to do my MSW and then if I want to do the extra to do play therapy it's another 3 years.. and It seems like it will take forever.. Hearing it took someone a long time was super helpful 😊💗
    Its given me a lot of encouragement to keep going. It really is my passion but the work can be overwhelming and is a LONG road. I needed that from someone who's put in the long hard work.

I also love hearing things about the job and all the videos from your perspective as a therapist 😄xoxo

    oh wow! the degrees + licenses vary so much. i took the licensure exam 6 months after grad school because I'm an LMSW. but then there are 3 more years and 3,000 hours to an LCSW. thank you for all you do, and for this video! thank you for giving us credit for the things we do!
