The times are indeed, quite miraculous. When I read about the Octobass nearly sixty years ago, in an already ancient book about musical curiosities I could only use an over-active imagination to conjure the sound - now I can type the word Octobass into a search engine and find one, not embalmed a museum or muted within the pages of a book but involved in an ensemble playing a Bach transcription. Amazement and joy don't quite cover it.

there not violins they are basses and an normal bass is supposed to be as tall as you when you put your hand in the air a double bass is a little bigger and as you can see the octobass is huge.

I'm a contralto woman, big lover of basses and lower register in general. This is dark heaven for me. Thank you! My thoughts at the moment: 1) I'm not even sure I can distinguish the octobass. It's just bass galore, all over the place! 2) Apocalyptica should try to switch their cellos for double basses every once in a while.

Well you can if you keep that goal but you need a luthier or someone who crafts stringed instruments to make one which might take a chunk out of your pocket. Also you're going to have to find a way to figure out how to play it. And last you might need a partner sometimes when you play it. As the octobass sometimes requires two people unless you can work out a design in which you can play solo. But if you're truly determined and don't give up easily I'm sure you'll figure something out.
The octobass is very inconvenient. I have seen videos where tons of hairs come off from the bow just from playing a single song. For most of the notes, you can hear the pitches that well. And the most challenging part of playing an octobass would be the bowing. Other than that, it’s not that hard of an instrument, just takes some time to get used to.

It sounds beautiful, I loved that powerful sounds, double-basses, contrabasses and octabasse have a very interesting sounds together. I think I'm going to definitely change my violin.
Double basses and contrabasses are the same thing. Double bass and string bass are used most commonly in north America and Oceania. In Europe, contrabass (sometimes spelled differently [i.e. Kontrabas {Swedish}]) is pretty common as well. I am not sure about South America or Asia, but I am petty sure in Africa classical music is not very common. Also, something to note is that in jazz ensembles, they are called upright basses, or, very rarely, acoustic basses. In all of these instances, it is commonly shortened to just bass. But Mae sure you clarify that it's not a bass guitar!

I think the octobass is intended to be felt more than heard.
There are moments when they are almost in tune, but very few. The one playing the octo-bass is the best - of course he's using pre-set levers.
The amazing thing about Bach's music is that it can sound good in many different transcriptions. This one, however....

The fundamental of the octobass is not even audible on my computer's speakers. I think I'm hearing just some harmonics. Better with headphones, but not much.

The musicians have an excellent level but unfortunately the transcription is incorrectly made.
Curious and innovative interpretation of the "Chaconne" originally for solo violin . Sorry but not for those instruments, there are some untuned passajes, too much bass registers . The best is the guitar transcription made by Andres Segovia.

man, i had SUCH a hard time putting this together (when hearing it). honestly, i couldnt finish listening to it. kind of a disappointment. :(
i think it wouldve been Much better and easier on the ears, had it been 2 Cellos, 2 bass, and the 1 octobass..., rather than the 4 burly basses and 1 massive creature of abyss (octobass) all going at once. i felt it needed a lighter tone (no pun! haha) to even out the sound.. and kinda feel the cello wouldve been Perfect for that. maybe ill give it another listen to see, but so far, its a tad brutal on the ears for me :(
On some places intonation was quite badly off I don't know which one of the basses it was but I think it was same one or two basses that were doing it.
Just don't give the elephant a headache. :)

This " seems " to contain some of the worst intonation I have heard on a publicly available recording of a bowed instrument. Is it the acoustics ? The Microphone ( s ) ? The recorder ? Me ? or What ? No -one else seems to be commenting this way.........
