You forgot that one way more people would be speaking French is if France won the Spanish war of succession and incorporated the entire Spanish empire into its domain.
France actually won the war of spanish succesion but Spain and France never unified despite this.
@@beltransalasgarcia6005 that's because the peace treaty stipulated that the 2 countries must never unify
@@beltransalasgarcia6005 I'm french tho, but just.. no.
I mean, we DID manage to put Phillipe on the spanish throne, but the whole point of this was to prepare for a potential personnal union when Phillipe would take the french throne, so having Phillipe renounce its inheritance defeat the whole point, not to mention that the War made Austria stronger by giving them the spanish Netherlands.
The War feel honestly more like a french defeat than anything else.
i feel like the domains will still be separate like the castile-aragon situation. but yea sure
Without mentionning the Seven Years War. Our French settlers were the first ones that colonized US

Fun fact: they still have some of their colony like french guiana
Though they treat them as any other French department
@@Razor-hh6ru yeah, i believe the people there have French citizenship.
so it isn't really a colony.
Its no longer colonys if im correct.
It's not a colony please respect our compatriots. They are as French as Parisians, Britons, Normands etc and are in no way different. They choose to stay French and therefore should not be referred to as a colony. Imagine it's like Alaska
And there are like Martinique, St. Pierre, those island in the carribean and Africa, and French polinesia
Napoleon is well respected in Italy and San Marino, and many other countries. It surprised me that so many countries didn't really see him as an invader but to some extent a social liberator.
But what shocked me was the level of rivalry between England and France. In London, the Apsley House, is basically a showcase of how the Duke of Wellington finally beat Napoleon in the 7th European coalition... Dude held banquets commemorating his victory every year until his death. Come on, really?! Hahaha.
Prior to WW1, victory in war was seen as something glorious for generals, nobles and kings. Victors constructed monuments, wrote down their victories, and commissioned paintings of themselves. If you're a national hero, an aristocrat, and rich, why wouldn't you throw parties to glorify yourself? It was the expected social norm of the day. We live in a very different culture today where war was seen as ugly, not glorious. Mainly because of the use of modern industrial revolution weapons in the 20th century and the upheaval of the old order at the end of WW1.
even though napoleon looted italian art?
Napoleon was ethnically italian. In the medieval ages, his ancestors were mayors in the italian mainland. If napoleon had been born a few years earlier than he was, his place of birth would have been "the Republic of genoa" which was an italian state. Furthermore when napoleon invaded Italy, he abolished most of the various states of Italy and replaced them with the kingdom of Italy. Eventually, sardinia piedmont was inspired by napoleon to unite Italy. Its no wonder italians like a man whom was ethically one of them and whom basically created their country.
I would too if I beat Napoleon
just imagine : u defeated a guy, who defeated the rest of Europe combined 6 consecutive times in last 20 years. Isn't that the greatest military achievement one can have?
The Huguenots weren't even remotely the majority of France's merchants, educated citizens, or craftsmen. Losing (some) of them hurt France somewhat, but the situation was never so close that the presence of the Huguenots would have made a difference in the long run.
But that doesn’t matter because France surrender
The Huguenots were also going to Prussia. They welcome them with open arms too because of their skills.
true
It's the exact opposite Huguenot leaving not only weakened tremendously France but also gave in an incredible boost to the rival European countries.
maybe voluntarily or forcefully converting them back to Catholicism was better option in my opinion. Since they were a huge portion of french, and very skilled than the rest, kicking them out was not a good option. or maybe just tolerate some Protestant minorities , for the sake of ur nation.

British will make fun of France in the comments while they lost their Empire exactly at the same era
Because Britain gave it up, it didn't fight to the death and still lose like France, and the few times it did fight, it fought because the enemy were communists (Malaysia, Kenya, oman) and usually won.
Even in Vietnam, the first soldiers there after ww2 were the British, and they did a good job against the viet minh before handing it over to the French whom fucked up and they then handed it over to the Americans whom fucked up even harder.
@@mappingshaman5280 Well most of the time France allowed indendence peacefully, decolonisation was natural because both countries were weakened thanks to WW2 and it became really criticized, the Algerian War was a great military sucess but a political failure, U.S. put pression of the French government to stop.
Also saying British did better is not really right cause winning against insurgents is easy on the court term, but when people want freedom they continue and this is how you get 7y of war and understand its unwinable. Plus Soviets and Chinese supported them.
Thus yes British are not in the best position to make fun of us, loosing the biggest Empire of all time after peacefull protest is everything but based.
@@noidea5984 No no no. The european empires wanted to hold every colony they saw they could make some benefit out of it. So they have to be kicked out of it.
4:32 fun fact: when picking the permanent security members, the soviet union back then wanted a communist state as it knows it'll get outvoted by the western powers(china didnt count back then as the nationalist government is still the recognized true china). UK suggested france would be in. while it was a pro-western nation, it can disagree with the US and with that, it was let in to the council
Also worth mentioning that France did have prior positive relations with Russia. France could also justify itself as a 4th nuclear power too
Interesting
it almost still works today
And the UK suggested that because they wanted less and less things to do with the continental Europe and they were broken as well
The UK mostly wanted another colonial powerhouse in it, so that the French and British could defend each other's interests against American and Soviet pressure.
with all the possessions (mainly islands) around the world you could still argue that it is somewhat alive to this day...
island nations can't fightback lol, any mid country with veto can hold islands, it doesn't make france a superpower
also they have an abnormally large sphere of influence in west africa, although they are losing ground to russia
@@AkumaNoKuma i assume you watched the video so i ll skip those arguments. now add marine bases, airports and spheres of influences around the globe. not saying they are the most powerfull country on earth, but i think you underestimate france as a global power...
@@mint8648 its China they're losing ground to in Africa, not Russia.
@@mappingshaman5280 russia signed military deals with mali and burkina faso, their troops were stationed there. russia is intervening in central african republic. these are all francophone countries. i feel like china has more influence in the eastern part of africa.
Its kinda ironic that France nowdays has the biggest global "empire"
Not land wise but rather just how many little places that are so spread out thruout the world and are still french
The bigger ones are french guyana and french polynesia but also many other small islands in atlantic, pacific and indian ocean.
Its also the country that spans the most time zones (even more than russia-11) it spans 12 time zones
So even more ironicly the sun nowdays never sets in france
Edit: im not either french nor british, so please dont make the replies a warzone-
It still doesn’t set for Britain either, due to their overseas territories
@@XXXTENTAClON227 yea but we have more so its why
france also has an insanely large sphere of influence in west africa, francafrique
yet it still has struggles with these oversea-territories from what i got to know about the last election...
And it still technically has control over its African colonies, just not in name. France heavily influences its old colony’s leadership, forces them to hold French-controlled currency, etc. you don’t need colonies anymore if you can keep your soft power over those nations.

Germany is absolutely NOT France's father. Italy is. France may have a Germanic name, but its culture is romance, and the Gallo-Romans who lived there when the Franks took over didn't just disappear. They were always the majority and the Frankish rulers were always a distinct minority.
Germany wasn't a thing before 1870 so it would difficultly be the father of a country born in 500 A.D.
@@fethier4601 the kingdom of Germany existed in the 9th and 10th century before it turned into the Holy Roman Empire.
The German tribes had always existed in Central Europe, the Romans made lot's of detailed notes on the people and even fought wars against them several times, until the German hordes would swarm and sack Rome, the Roman Empire's capital, which would be the eventually downfall of Rome.
The German tribes conquered the previous Roman lands of Gaul, Hispania and mainland Italy, establishing many kingdoms. One of the German tribes called the Franks invaded and took over all of Gaul aswell as united most nearly all the other German tribes in Central europe forming the Frankish Empire which would last until it split into several countries one of which was East Francia which would later be the German kingdom and then even later the Holy Roman Empire of German nations.
@@cqpp I don't really consider the kingdom of germany being germany, I think it is more a thing considered after it happens but was a part of what would become the HRE (I don't know if I am being understandable there) and I don't consider the HRE being Germany. If i was deciding on when a coutry became a coutry I would still say Germany started in 1870 and France would start at the the death of Louis the Pious leading to the split of the frankish empire or under Phillipe II Auguste during the third crusade because he is the one that started to centralize France to make it less feudal.
I didn't see "Italy is" before and I absolutely don't agree with that. France's father would be the Roman Empire not Italy.
France, Spain and Italy are all sons of Rome.

I think the reason for the fall of France is demography. For centuries, France was the most populous country in Europe, in the Middle Ages, about 20-25% of the European population lived in France. In 1700, it was the first country in Europe by population, 21 million. In Russia, only about 11-13. In England - 5. However, already in 1800 France is in 2nd place - 30 million, Russian Empire is in first place - 38 million, England - 8 Million. And here begins a difficult period for France, by 1900 the population becomes 40 million. There are 30 million people living in England by 1900! In Russia Empire - 136 million! This is a very huge difference in population growth. In fact, the population of England as well as Russia has grown three or four times, while the population of France has increased by only 30%. Moreover, in 1939 the population was only 41 million. This is a meager increase, partly because of this, France could not resist Nazi Germany, because from the point of view of demography they had the same situation as modern Germany. The population growth in France began only after the Second World War, but so far it is a relatively low population density for Western Europe. To be honest, it's even a shame for France.
It's an important factor. People were peasants and didnt want to share the land between their sons. But unlike Germany or Russia they were educated peasants and knew contraception
I agree and that's true. Today we are the 4th most populated country in Europe (Russia: ~120 m, Germany:85m, UK-68m, France:67m)
But maybe we'll be soon 3rd lmao
@Chemya yes military commanders were really bad
but why France were having less kids in a time where other european countries were having many kids ?
@@krimokrimov6050 because :
1 France had many little land owners (due to Revolution and land redistribution but also before). Outside serfdom was still very present.
2 the Republic (but also the monarchy) cared about equality and forbid to give all your land to the first son. Would you divide your 2 hectares in 10 ? No, so make only one or two children.
3 how did they know how to do it ? In Napoleonic wars most men fought and learnt contraception with army prostitutes.
4 No war on french territory since a very long time --> early overpopulation --> early demographic transition
