- In this video, I discuss pressing natural hair with a hot comb, and pressing natural hair with a flat iron. Before you make a decision on pressing your natural hair with a pressing combs (hot comb) or flat iron, you need to watch this video. You can cause some serious damage to your natural hair if you don't understand how flat irons and pressing combs (hot combs) work. In this video, I explain while both can be used by a skilled professional - why I recommend one over the other in most circumstances for straightening or pressing natural hair.

I love love the pressing comb for years. My stylist pressed my hair from I was 10 till I was 18. I started out with short hair n my hair was down my back. This was back in the days. My hair never got damaged, people always thought I had a perm. I regretted perming my hair at 18, but I was young. I hate the
Flat iron because it does damage your hair after a while. I like the old school way.
I personally believe the old fashioned pressing comb is much better at straightening our hair. But using both of them makes sense.
The pressing comb is way better! I still use it on top of the stove.

Yes. I keep a hot plate with a bunch of paper towels. My hair always reverts to my curls. A stylist damaged my hair with a flat iron one time. Smh
@@mikkiismyname Yeah, I know flat irons are super damaging because like she said the temperature stays the same which isn't a good thing when people are continuously swiping the same piece of hair, even stylists. I also think smashing the hair between two hot plates is a very damaging technique. The combination of heat and mechanical manipulation with the iron equals major damage. I don't care what kind of gimmicks they come up with...ionic, ceramic, tourmaline, infrared, titanium. I've tried them ALL and I'm going back to old school.
@@cfoster6804 that stylist had my hair slick. It had no body to it. I knew something was wrong. I'm old and old school. Pressed my hair in college back in the 80's.. Lol. I am so glad that Amazon sells Kentucky Made hot combs. When they are new, they have to be seasoned but they break in easy. I also do a warm first pass with an electric comb and finish it with a hot comb because I don't blow dry my hair first.
I grew up getting my hair pressed & pressed & curled every two weeks with a pressing comb and pressing grease/oil only and it was a hard press that last. The only thing she used was the pressing grease/oil and I would grease my scalp 2 or 3 times a week and with nothing else and it stayed feeling moisterized I guess my hair was getting moister from the air cause it was healthy and lengthy and not dry. I wish I could find a local stylist who knows how to do it like that.
Yeah makes sense I never had heat damage back in the day with the hot comb, and hot combed twice a month now only flat iron every 2 months & get tons of heat damage no matter what

I use a pressing comb for my roots and edges and a flat iron for the length. I have no heat damage because I have been using the since I was 15 years old. Keep white paper towels to let you know if it will scorch your hair .
I have an electric hot comb (pressing comb) and it can be set to a certain temperature. It doesn't lose temperature until you unplug it or reset the temp... just like the flat iron.
I like the pressing comb better doesn't take my hair out and no the pressing comb doesn't burn anything if you do it right.that comb is a holy grail.you need to know what your doing though but I never had any issues with that it always reverted once I washed my hair.i just used good ol ultra sheen hair dress.detangled my hair with a regular comb omg thank God for the diffuser.and a curling iron.i had very long hair and wasn't even paying attention to it honestly.than went to flatirons the pulling and tugging omg ugh why didn't I stick with my old school ways.honestly my stove went out and i was a teen no job no money so I just started using my mom's flatiron and that was that.
there is nothing like those old school pressing combs if you use them right. That hair will not puff up as quick if you use that comb. You will get your moneys worth if you let the beautician press and curl your hair with a little bit of cream press, and dont forget to cut your ends too, talk about a beautiful sight!
I won't put flat irons in my hair again. This lady flat iron my hair and burnt it . my hair was straight like I put a relaxer in it Never again. Now I'm going with hot comb
I will always use a pressing comb . Either electric or on the stove.

Vaseline or Afro Sheen. My Mama preferred Vaseline, good for skin and rough feet. (Oil and use cotton socks at bed time)
Blue Magic Pressing Oil or Royal Crown Hair Dressing
Good old "DAX" - Green color for pressing your hair. Red color for curling. I still use it to this day. if it aint broke, it don't need fixing folks. I remember Mrs. Mays the old school hairdresser putting a hurting on my press and curl. I live in NY and can't find a good hairdresser like that any more. :(

That's why you have a white towel handy to bump the hot comb on to see if it's too but hot.
I use my moms 70 year old hot comb to transition. I love it better than the flat iron
Majority of my clients that I use the pressing comb on still have their curl pattern. And those two or three that I use the flat iron on every two weeks have straight hair on the ends on or a weakened curl pattern.
See that happened to me, thats why I decided to just strickly use the hot comb on the new growth because I noticed the flat iron actually caused more heat damage
Amelia Salon finally someone put it out there. I've been saying that forever and the few old school salon stylist in my area have been saying that too. My curl pattern comes back with the old school hot comb. Flat iron does something to the curl pattern.
What are your thoughts on electric pressing combs? If the heat stays consistent, which do you think is better to straighten the hair? Mama always used a pressing comb and my hair was always good back in the day. I’m considering buying an electric one. Although I rarely straighten my natural hair now.
Hello and thank you for viewing my videos. I have to be honest, I have never used an electric straightening comb. I have always been afraid of them. However, if you find one That has a temperature gauge on it form 100-400 it should be ok. I’m not a fan of just an on and off switch and the tool set it’s on temp. I hope 🤞 this was helpful.

I just had one used on my roots for my press. Omg my roots are super silky and did not REVERT!! 🤯 I'm buying me one. I want to do my ends too and see if they last longer then with a flat iron.
Good info...found the longer my hair got I have to hot comb my hair before I flat iron it...Also not having enough moister is a big problem...

This is why I find it silly when black women straighten using "the chase method", because they're imitating hot combs; just using a more expensive, bulkier tool, and a more complicated method.
Thats true. I rather just use one hot comb rather than that stupid chase method with two tools
I cannot chase if I wanted to. My dominant shoulder is messed up due to an injury I never bounced back from, so I cannot put too much stress on, so no chase method when flat iron. I actually do not need the chase if I use right product in hair and washed and dried the right way from get go.....

Amen sister I know this comment is 2 years late I don't miss getting my ears and the side of my back of my neck burned my grandmother would hit us in the top of our heads with a flaming hot comb pressing it with Sulfur 8 but I had a head full of thick hair before the weeds come in and start wearing them I still have very thick coarse hair now but over the years my edges have gotten exceedingly thin now I got to have surgery to replace it back to its original texture and that's from wearing too much and weaves so you are right old-school many times can be better and sometimes not just depends💆🏻💇🏼💆🏼💆🏽💆💥💦💫💭🗯️💣💇🏽💇🏻💇.
Thanks for this video! I actually would prefer the OLD SCHOOL hot comb over the flat iron!!! I wish that I knew how to use the hot comb (I have an electric one). I no longer use flat irons, only the curling irons
nooooo. get rid of that electric hot comb. Get the one for the stove and you will get a great press.Get a Kentucky maid of a or a Kizure hot comb!
my daugthers hair is really "strong" ,which is a good thing but her hair likes to fight me.I love braids but if i dont make them tiny her natural hair always frizz through. In order for her hair to cooperate it needs to be straight but ive always been afriad of the pressing combs, do to the horrors of childhood and grease. I still remember the "sizzle"...lol.so am trying to learn the art of pressing cuz flat irons do nothing for my daugther except make her hair hot...not a curl get straight...smh...

Hey Ms Sally I enjoyed your video. I would like to know if you'd answer my question. My loved one gave me a few of her pressing combs and they look like other combs that have been used over the years. What I want to know are we supposed to clean them every now and again or leave them how they are? If you say I should clean them is ajax/comet ok or a brillo pad? I really would appreciate your answer.
Honestly i am so confused with these things. I live in the caribbean, so ofc very hot humid weather and i sweat alot. When i was in my teens i had a stylist used marcels on my hair every month. My hair was long and healthy never had heat damage. My hair always reverted no straight pieces. My hair also stayed straight unless it was exposed to water.
Fast forward to now. I got heat damage 3 times from a regular flat iron. Plus my hair never stays straight in the humidity. Plus i went to a stylist recently an she destroyed my hair with the same marcels i was accustomed to as a teen. ( She probably had it too hot). I will never understand how marcels kept my hair straight and healthy even in humidity, yet these flat irons damage my hair with way less heat and reverts in no time.

nice! questions....im 4b natural, will i get heat damage overtime if i use a pressing comb on my hair twice a month with heat protectant and deep conditioning it first? also, do you see a lot of your clients hair grow and retain length better with the straightening comb or no heat? because my hair curls and shrinks so much and tangles so i need to keep it stretched.

Pressed my natural hair with a bevel iron. Amazing results. Just like mom's results. I found it easier than the comb ... maybe because my hair is a little past waist.
How do you use your bevel iron and which creme press do you use?
What about an electric flat iron I have one and that keeps the temperature. I also own a flat iron by the way.
What brand pressing comb do you recommend ?
N Murray one has a skinner comb part and i personally don't prefer that one. I like the one that has the thicker comb.

I bought an eletric straightening comb . I am a natural so what temp should I set it at? what are your thoughts on it like is it safe?
Thanks for watching!! Unfortunately, I’m not familiar with the electric straightening comb. However, I would start off with a low temperature and gradually go up as needed to be The safe side. Also, start with a small section in the back just in case.
I had my hair flat ironed some years ago and it seemed to change the texture. I lost my recoil. Although, it gives a nice sheen and looks wonderful, I think my hair may be too weak for it. It seems no one just presses with a comb these days. They don't seem to be able to achieve the same sheen with just the comb alone. Any suggestions?
You can try Dudley's pressing creme, it's really good. A little goes a long way.
I use a product called ELC SMOOTH Frizz along with the serum on the green containers. When pressing I use Nairobi it’s not as heavy on the hair. The key is not to put the creme press on before I you straighten the hair. Only when you are ready to curl it
Are you supposed to use the teeth on the pressing comb all the way down the hair shaft I've heard yes and no?
The teeth controls the hair as the comb goes through the hair. However, the bar/back of the comb it what hold the most heat and that’s where the straightening comes in at. I was taught to place the comb in the hair and make a small “c” as you glide down the hair with the comb. I hope this helps 😊

Yes. I have thick hair and it was even thicker, when I was younger. And it got very straight from the pressing comb. Of course the grade of hair that I have it doesn’t take a lot of heat
The scary thing about putting the hot comb on the actual🔥fire, is that you don't know exactly how hot it is and how much heat you are applying to your hair. With the flat iron, most of them have a temperature which only goes up to 450 degrees, which is the most amount of heat that should be applied to your hair.
True, if the person doesn’t know how to use the hot comb. The hot comb has been used for centuries and never did it cause someone’s strands to remain straight after being pressed. Unfortunately, with the flat iron we run the risk of permanent texture change ( straight hair) rather then the conversion back to curly. 🙂
Amelia Salon True. I grow up with my mother using the hot comb on my hair. And my curls always come back when she washed my hair. But she knew how to use the hot comb properly.

Hi Jewel, I’m really not sure about the plug in pressing comb. I have never used one. Just be very careful when using it and make sure that you test it on a towel to see if it turns brown. If it turns brown it’s to hot to use. I use Satin Tame spray by Decca plus because it’s not oily nor does it weigh the hair down. A lot of those heat protectants have heavy oils and alcohols in them. I spray that on first and use a blow dryer on a setting of 150 or less to dry the hair. Needless to say the temp is almost cool.

Unfortunately, I’ve never used an electric pressing comb. I do not use a pressing cream anymore on the hair before pressing it because it’s causes a frying or sizzling noise that creates a condition called bubbled hair. When the hair hair heats up the cuticles slightly opens allowing the heat to penetrate. Once the cuticles closes the bubbles from the steam become trapped inside causes the strands to weaken. I will use a smoothing serum only while blow drying the hair as well as Decca Plus Satin Tame spray.

Yes, in a salon setting we either blow dry on medium to low heat. Sometimes, the hair can be set on large rollers and put under the dryer. However, the hair still has to be flat ironed out.

Seem like electric hot comb would be similar to her point about the electric flat iron. Electricity allows the heat to be constant and uncontrollable=damage.

The correct term is Pressing Comb. It’s called a pressing comb because you press the hair with the comb plus the bar that holds the teeth. You can’t “Hot” the comb through the hair. When using the pressing comb the bar of the comb presses against the hair causing the hair to become straight not the teeth. The teeth are for guidance through the hair. 😉😊

Please believe as a Cosmetologist/Barber Instructor and Trichologist I know all about my industry as well as Annie Malone, Madam CJ Walker and the Patent of the pressing comb (neither are the inventors). No one really knows who created the pressing comb or the beveled irons (not tongs). I never mentioned in the video who created the beveled irons or flat irons. 😊 it was believed that a French man (not German) had created it in the early 1800’s. Annie Malone and Sarah Breedlove was born after 1867 and Annie after her, sooooo chances are good they had no hands in either creation. If you got your information from the Milady Cosmetology Book or via Google search I ask that you go visit a few Slave Marts and African American Museums we have a lot of untold history there. 🤭🤔🤫🤐💆🏽💇🏽♀️💁🏽♀️
