Jimmy Barry Murphy, supremely talented, supremely humble. I know him but he doesn't know me. I passed him on umpteen occasions playing football with his son on the road (who later became a professional footballer in England). Always got a friendly wave from him. I'm the world's biggest cynic but that man is pure golden.

Would it be beyond the realms of possibility to introduce a new role or 2 in hurling?
Rule 1; a point from a pull (as in not having previously had the ball in possession) could be worth 2 or 3 perhaps and a goal from a pull be with 6?
Call me old fashioned but there's so many points in the game these days, I dunno, it gets a bit boring.

For me John Fentons goal is the greatest. The way he tapped the ball forward, and then struck it like a bullet, makes it the greatest goal ever scored. And he meant to go for goal. That was the genius of the man. Outstanding hurler for club and county !!!

John Fenton for me is one of the top three players of all time. He was completely underestimated. His contribution to hurling at club and county level will be hard to surpass. Cork were a real dominant force at all levels with John Fenton in it. John Fenton to watch gave a lesson on how hurling should be played. Today Cork lack that physicality, skill, determination to win and intelligent hurling that is key. I love Cork and all its hurlers who year on year do their very best in training and in matches. This year gave me hope for Cork hurling in the future as that spirit was back amongst the team which was great to see.

I totally agree with you about Cork's progress this year. And, to be fair, they were very unlucky, especially against Clare and Limerick. Lost both away games by only a single point. And in the drawn game against Tipp, Cork could have won it with Declan Daltons free at the death. Cork are not that far off from the mighty Limerick. Hopefully, next year they can drive on and go all the way !!!

The #1 goal with Fenton and Barry-Murphy was the All Ireland Semi final at Croke Park?? I think that match finished 4-15 to 2-18 Cork hammering a very good Galway team.. Iggy Clarke and the Connolly brothers were in that great Galway side. My dad took me to that game that day.. I still have pictures from the day of the Artane Boys BAND AND SOME GREAT SHOTS FROM THE GAME AS WELL.
I used to play Gaelic, Hurling and Soccer all in the same weekend but the GAA told me to either stop playing Soccer or I'd have to leave the GAA and this was after the ban had been lifted.. I loved playing all sports but I made the mistake of playing soccer instead of leaving Clondalkin Celtic.
I played for Round Towers and won a medal during the Centenary Year which was one of my prized possessions. Lots of ppl won medals that year with the Centenary Year on them I know but for me it meant a lot. The GAA was started to hide the activities of the OLD IRB, or Irish Republican Brotherhood. U still see GAA hurling teams doing the guard of honour with their Hurley's at funerals today. The Hurley was brought instead of the gun back in the day and I think that wee tradition is still used today.
The GAA has a rich and full history. The sport has been admired all over the world over the past 60/70 years by lots of different countries..
We, Irish ppl, have exported our rich traditions all across the globe and these traditions are still going strong today..

Great goals but even JBM and Fenton know they are not as good as Joe Cannings Leinster final goal v Kilkenny. It had to be shown from 4 different camera angles before anyone could comprehend that it was even possible.

JBMs goal had one camera angle , it’s the greatest strike that’s ever been seen ! No argument !

Canning's was amazing too Noel, no doubt. I think that would have been after this particular list was made by TG4. Three very different goals, all moments of genius in their own right.

Joe Canning was a wonderful player - No denying that. But he himself got better goals that the one you describe! That was certainly a tremendous goal, but to say it was better than JBM's or Fenton's? Not a hope. Yes, I'm from Cork and both players were two of my idols growing up, but that said, there's no denying they were the 2 best goals of all time as captured on tv at any rate.

@@criostoirnott3733 both were swipes that could have gone anywhere. JCs had an over the shoulder catch, release and pull that all happened in the blink of an eye. Maybe not the greatest goal ever but certainly the greatest seen on mainstream TV and unquestionably better than the Cork two.

No skin in the game but the Fenton goal is just the most iconic goal ever, watched highlights recently of another match and the amount of ground hurling he did was unbelievable. Would probably be dropped from an intercounty team now for doing it, that skill is gone forever but this goal will never be forgotten.

Great goals for sure but over the past few years hurling has become more skillful and there are even better goals to now choose from, no offense to these 2 magnificent goals but these are very old in comparison to today's more skillful players from all counties.

What you have today is a lighter ball, players with higher levels of strength and fitness, completely different tactics and the dubious throwing and over carrying of the ball. Are people scoring better goals as a result? What new skills are in the game or what skills are players performing at a higher level than say 25 years ago? It seems to me like less goals these days as with the light ball players can pick off points from so far away with ease.
