- While there have only been 11 Triple Crown winners, there have plently of Triple Crown near misses. There have been 17 horses that have won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, but failed to win the Belmont Stakes.

I have also heard that Ron Franklin got Spectacular Bid into an early speed duel and that was also a factor in the loss. The Belmont Stakes is not a race to engage in that kind of game.

CORRECTION. Cañonero was not a horse from Europe. It was a horse from Venezuela, South America, and the only VENEZUELAN Horse to this day to have won two legs of the USA Triple Crown

A mile and a half is not a demanding distance by European standards! The British Triple Crown is run over first over a mile in the 2000 gunieas in May, then a mile and a half Derby in June and the final leg is over a mile and three quarters (16 furlongs) in the St Leger in Sep. It is much more demanding than the US Triple crown.
What about Riva Ridge?????
Riva Ridge won the 1972 Kentucky Derby. However, I think his stablemate Secretariat won the 1973 Triple Crown. His stats have never been matched or beaten in 45 years!
@@lired70 He was asking about Riva Ridge, not Secretariat. Riva won the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes, he would've won the Preakness had it not been for bad weather, Riva wasn't used to wet tracks.
@@OfficialMuffiin True Rubles. However, Riva Ridge was quite the horse! He lost the Preakness and came in fourth! He was beaten by Bee Bee Bee! However, in 1998 he was inducted to the Racing Hall Of Fame! During his career, he ran many races and won 17 out of 30 starts! Ron Turcotte was his jockey! It was actually Riva who saved the farm. He yielded $1,111 347 at the end of his career. Lucien Laurin also trained Riva Ridge! The one thing that Penny Chenery thought was unfair, was that Riva wasn't mentioned in the Disney Movie Secretariat! Actually Riva Ridge was her favorite horse! When she called to him, he knew her!

He ran many races and won over a million dollars in his racing career! No, Riva did not like a sloppy track. I believe that he came in 4th at the Preakness! He was actually Penny Chenery's favorite horse. When she called his name, he responded to her. Secretariat didn't do that. Riva Ridge was inducted into the racing hall of fame! Out of 30 starts he won 17 races!
@@lired70 Glad to hear he was inducted into the Hall of Fame! Yeah I agree, I don't get why he wasn't mentioned in the movie. Had it not been for Riva then Secretariat would've been sold as a yearling!
