    I really think the biggest thing holding PvP back is the lack of playerbase. I feel like I'm fighting the same players constantly and I agree that the team balancing doesn't work as intended. Most of my control games are glorified 1v1s against the other team's top player which leads to some pretty frustrating matches.
    The solution to me is so simple. Put resources into making PvP more enjoyable, and the playerbase will increase which will automatically help with matchmaking. Destiny 1's crucible was so successful because they actually gave us content instead of drip feeding us to the point where we're jumping up and down about 3 new maps. I'm so sick of them slightly tweaking archetype stats every week and calling it a PvP update. The 3 new maps are a great start, but we need more. A lot more.

      maybe now that finale shape is out they truly give it the love it deserves, destiny is still the only one of its type on the market and pvp is actually really good and really fun when its popular

      "making PvP more enjoyable" is such a loaded phrase that i cannot even describe where to even begin with making it "more enjoyable"
      enjoyable for who? casuals? experienced players? which experience levels? a combination of these groups?
      i think what we need is way more balancing across the board to bring more weapons to the meta. i want competitive matches to have a variety of weapons, not just conditional and ignorant hammer -- i want to see trace rifles, primary and rocket sidearms, autos, adaptive and rapid fire pulses, precision hand cannons - pretty much every archetype.
      i want to see somebody's loadout and think, "i never thought about playing that way before" instead of "here we go again." maybe prismatic will help with that.

    Living in Australia I’m in the rare situations of experiencing when the matchmaking system deliberately wants me to lose by placing me into an entire lobby of overseas players due to my PvP skill level. Normally this happens around my third PvP match and then continues to place me on a losing streak for several matches with the occasional win every so often. Trials is even worse with consistency of placing the lower skill level players on my team against a higher skill teams. All I want is a consistent experience and more fair skill distribution for PvP, so I can feel like I’m improving and growing as a PvP player.

      @@ZachTheInsaneOne My suggestion is to run xenophage and maybe a rapid fire fusion to break the middle blight thing, im usually out of ammo by the time its heroic, but at least it heroic-ed. Its worked even racing random blueberries breaking the non central blights for me.

      @@kopkaptkopkapticott4366 nah. Grand Overture does it way faster. Load into destination, shoot things with it to get 20 missiles loaded, rally to the flag to get your ammo back. As soon as the event starts, get the buff and shoot all the missiles at the blight, the gun switches back into slug launcher mode. You should only need a few more shots to make it heroic, and you still have all your ammo. My main issue is the absolute buffoons destroying the bubbles as soon as they spawn and nuking all the Taken.

    The population issue was fixed near the end of shadowkeep year with the switch to pure CBMM and consolidation of gamemode options. Then the population issue reappeared when they reintroduced SBMM and other matchmaking influences and split the PvP population with more playlists.

      Saying the population as a whole went down with the introduction of SBMM is a bit disingenuous and reflects only a portion of the PvP community. The overall population actually went up with the introduction of SBMM as seen in multiple TWID's discussing player count under the various iterations of SBMM. It was the population at the high skill end of the distribution that had a severe bleed over the period of time that it was implemented. But even though it's a smaller population, in a PvP environment it's the most dedicated part of the population.
      This is why matchmaking doesn't use SBMM anymore, because whilst it solved the issue for average/low skill players, where the bulk of players are. It absolutely killed the game for high skill players, making our games unbearably sweaty because of the extreme segregation we had to deal with. Which is why we've seen a spike in the high skill player count under the new MM and a drop in average skill players that is not as severe as the CBMM days. The removal of SB segregation also helped this massively. Making for a healthier MM that doesn't negatively impact low or high skill players disproportionately. They just need to fix the lobby balancing now (the biggest offender), and continue tweaking OPMM and the integrated FBMM.

    I feel 6 Solo players should never match a team of 4 and a team of 2 or solos. Or team chat should be only txt in control. Something to at least give the solos team a chance. Right now though I know I'm matching a team of 3 or 4 . My team is not going to win. I don't even try to win anymore I know as one player more times than not no matter what I can't effect the outcome of the match enough. I just try to survive and do as well as possible. Still love pvp. I really hope Bungie adds team size into skill equation..

    I've had matches where the opponents can barely shoot back and I've had matches where I get skill diffed so hard that I don't even get loot at the end. Something ain't right.

    I play Destiny a ton. 40% of my overall time in the game has been in PvP and I have thousands of hours. I've endured all the worst metas and still stuck around but never have I ever played less PvP than now. Really hope some things can change for the better soon seems like as of late it's one bad change after another

    bringing back 4v4 as the core mode with an 8v8 combined arms btb style option for more casual play would go a long ways in making pvp more enjoyable. i'd also love an option to queue up for specific maps/modes like tf2's matchmaking or halo's match composer

    It’s a lose lose situation, I can remember post screaming to remove SBMM then when it’s removed the skill gap is too wide, there needs to be a middle ground somehow

    The premades actually end up on *different* teams in your lobbies? 9 times out of 10, if there's more than one fireteam and they can all fit on a single team together, that's where they end up. It ends up being 2-3 premades against a bunch of soloes for me a lot of the time.

      People wouldn't feel the need to repeat themselves if the proper changes were made. Destiny is an ever evolving game and sometimes bungie is slow to make changes or makes the wrong chages so people who are passionate about the game being healthy and fun who know what they're talking about have to repeat themselves

    I hope fs moves the needle regarding pvp. The connections are so half assed I cant tell if a dudes using 3rd party hardware or software or if we're both victims being mad at eachother

    You are so right about the quieter penalty I have 500k crusible kills and since the last dlc this is my routine, load up quick play if I feel within 2 games the parameters are off I start leaving games. When I get a msg about leaving games I go play cod, bungie doesn’t need to punish me for there bad mm, in com even worse I wait 1 round unbalance I leave.

    I completely agree and relate to everything said here. BUT WHY?! I'm not a high skill player! Why do I have to carry blueberries against ascendant rank players when I "don't got it like that"? Matchmaking has been all over the place cus I either get 5.0 or 0.5 in control and there's no in-between

    I agree with you that control is supposed to be a “medium” option balanced for casual and competitive players.
    To ease the game giving high skill players to abuse the casual play styles of other players, I would love to see a control game mode where there are no supers, but grenades, melee, and class abilities are allowed and balanced accordingly.
    You have much more experience in PVP than I do so I trust you judgment. but when I play control, I find supers to be an instant win button and it feels like a coin flip if someone is going to kill you with it if they decide to use it on you. What’s worse are the panic supers, where the “one and done” supers like blade barrage will kill you even if you have high mobility with astrocyte verse and blink and reacting in a timely manner because of the ridiculous amount of tracking the knives have.

    I'm not on skill island like you Cammy but I still run into a lot of the same issues in pvp which has lead to me avoiding one of the main draws I had to the game. It's rough going in solo or with a small team into Playlist like control cause it seams I only match players in that skill island bracket or at least close to it even though I'm very much not at that level.

    I got lambasted for saying exactly what you said.
    Most matches are veteran slayers vs 1 average player and 5 noobs. I'm to the point I just leave matches often

    I play a lot of QP as a solo player, and the 2 main reasons teammates quit are snipers and being matched against premade teams.
    They really need to bring back freelance. Being matched against premade teams 18 out of 20 matches, just aint it.

    People want matchmaking that benefits themselves at the expense of others. We play PvP to dominate (sometimes to "challenge" ourselves, but really it's for the feeling that comes from winning against the greatest challenge we can defeat). The dev's task is to create a matchmaking system that actually favors the the fewest number of people while selling it as one that helps the most. It's terribly difficult to get outside your personal perspective without also losing touch with reality, getting lost in idealism.

    You are 100% on the money with the "quitter penalty" likely being [in my opinion] one of the biggest reasons the PvP base can't/won't stick around. Not that I always condone it, but I personally have ragequit out of lobbies numerous times (either in 6's or comp, occasionally in Trials) because my teammates were beyond terrible; rather than sit there and get farmed for the next 10 minutes and getting angry, I choose to quit and try to find another match. If this happens "too often (in Bungie's eyes)," I now can't play ANY PvP for 30 minutes. This leads me to just say Fuck it and I don't play destiny that weekend.
    Absolutely terrible decision making. The penalty system already exists in the "competitive" game modes: If you quit in Trials, you get a loss on your card; if you quit in Comp, your points and/or rank goes down....so why penalize even further? It's a negative feedback loop that does nothing but further pushes players away from PvP.

    To get non-pvp players in, simple solution would be to add new material only behind pvp, which would allow one to change barrels, mags anf masterwork at gunsmith (but not 3rd or 4th col perks).
    New loot for pve players to play pvp is not enough as B can’t make loot behind pvp OP enough to get them in anyway.

    Weve had low population before but matchmaking has never been this bad. Outlier is just not working. I play console and find if there is an outlier running the lobby it’s usually obviously someone using KBM or it’s a coordinated 2 stack that gets on our spawn immediately. Snake draft doesnt work with 2 or 3 stacks. I’d rather wait 5 minutes for a good match than load into one i’m going to quit after getting t-bagged by a XimCronus igneous user in the first 40 seconds as my team refuses to team shot.

    why do we even need Matchmaking its Quickplay and whoever wants to 6 Stack should expierience Sbmm or at least get a balanced Lobbys against simliar or even better Opponents when you are high stacking (4+ Members in a Team) also Iron Banner included

    Need players to matchmake, "hardcore" players want no sbmm to stomp on noobs and fill an ego, noobs want sbmm so they don't get stomped.
    When either side loses they look at bungie hoping for a miraculous fix expecting that something can change that will turn everything into roses. It doesn't happen and everyone leaves

    I've stopped playing 6v6 modes because they are too chaotic, Rumble is infested with cheaters and AFKers, Comp has VERY questionable game modes, so I just play Trials once a month.
    Sad times indeed.

    i started playing on this open access and the bad aspects outweigh the good aspects. the hitreg is awful, the desync is insane, meleeing is awful and laggy. flinch is awful, wells and bubbles are awful. popular player mentality is to quit if you are not winning. legit pvp has handful of players who play for pvp and rest are there for the loot.

    Am I the only one who doesn't mind the crappy MM? Sure a lot of matches are unwinnable but it just gives you opportunities to 1vX. Quitting isn't the answer, just rough it out and get your reps in. At least that's my philosophy with it

    I think I reset the crucible rank about 10 th times maybe even more and I see teams destroyed 2 good players in one team the rest negative kd they need to do something about balancing I see 😂 team mate siting next to enemy player realising 5 second later 🤦‍♀️

    I play a ton of pvp, and for the most part I really enjoy it. I really would like connection based matchmaking over any form of skill based. Eventually my quick play matches became just as sweaty comp matches, which is not fun for me. So I’ve switched to rumble and I absolutely love it! Some lobbies are totally unbalanced, some dude will waste everyone in 2 minutes. Some times I’ll be the one wasting everyone and it makes me feel good. Other times, the lobby feels pretty balanced and everyone is fighting for the 20th point. Happy final shape day everyone, it’s been a joy these past 10 years!!!

    Matchmaking takes minimum. 3or4 min. İ dont care playing same level like me. I just want to do gaddamn bounties for brightdust. Just make a quick lobby and start the game
    May be i will stomp by goldexile,cammy or wallah. İt does not matter... just build up lobby quickly😡

    the matchmaking is horrid, if youre a good player you already know which bots will be on your team based on load outs before the game even starts. Even in trials running solo, you know which garbage duo will be your teammates, while the other duo are two competent players everytime

    In Australia our matchmaking is fucked i hate it... you either vs the same dogs multiple games in a row or it throws you into asian matchmaking and that shit is like playing for your life..

      It depends on what playlists you're talking about, some still just use CBMM or RBMM etc.
      Additionally you might actually just be good enough at the game. With outlier protection the player pool is not segregated for the most part. You just can't match people outside of a particular skill delta, and it varies along that delta giving variation to your matches (instead of being thrown into a tightly defined bracket), this goes in both directions along the skill spectrum. This protects bad players from the top players, but still offers larger MM pools and can give a higher priority to connection than pure SBMM could at either end of the distribution. It means you can match players who are worse than you vs the strict SBMM days. This makes the matches less sweaty since they've opened up the MM to a wider skill pool. However, it also means you can match players that are slightly better than you. Although that end of the spectrum has a smaller population, and you won't match with the absolute top unless you're there or very close to begin with.

    Solid video, my biggest gripe with matchmaking is FBMM. I understand why it's there, no one wants to be a solo going up against a coordinated 6-stack. But at the same time, it's created a lonely void since you have to be extremely specific with who joins your FT for PvP. I ironically think the solo queue node was a better option than the current FBMM one.

    This video is golden. I second your sentiment and hope the developers reevaluate some things matchmaking related in PvP.
    For me, it has been a natural progression after grinding PvE for so long that I made it a journey (of sorts) to become better at PvP and stop avoiding it. I’ve gotten to the point now where most of my games are already in progress and we are losing heavily or the matchmaking, itself, takes anywhere from 5-10 minutes (of course the upper bound of this resulting in an error code). This isn’t me boosting my own ego. I’m simply surprised at the low player count and how the temporary band-aid solution Bungie proposed was three new maps. It doesn’t express a lot of care or intentionality that is expressed in other aspects of the game which is highly unfortunate and disheartening.
    I understand this is an argument with no proposed solution, but I do think Bungie needs to be made aware of the issues you propose and ACKNOWLEDGE that they see the issues with connectivity, matchmaking and the like.

    Yeah i primarily play pvp and all i have to say is that the last half of the season i faced nothing but high end players running handcannon meta and shotgun loadouts. There was no variation to speak of what so ever now while i don't mind it cause i learned how to play with a handcannon as the result but i play with my wife most of the time and she is a casual and it made it very hard for her to even play the game because no new player is going to beat a igneous hammer from 40 meters or ace with a skilled hand.
    Would like to see much more of a balanced take to the team building.

    Removal of one of the 3v3 game modes for the addition of a 4v4 control is something I’ve wanted for a while. Is there a reason they have only been doing teams divisible by 3?

      Me too I really want 4v4 something. I think the reason is that’s how it was when d2 launched and people did not like crucible. But it wasn’t really that it was fours instead of threes, it was everything else. I think teams of four is just best honestly.

      ​@@seffers4788yeah, I didn't dislike d2 yr1 pvp b/c of the 4v4 I hated it b/c of the slow ttk, team shots, and static weapons. Heck I'd even take back the triple melee to kill. If glaives need more than 2 then so should guardians.

    Especially during into the light I feel like players just especially played more PvE. I usually play like 90% PvP and 10% PvE, but I found myself grinding a lot of PvE and barely playing PvP, just because I really wanted the rewards from onslaught and I found it fun. I’m sure a lot of players were the same, so it pulled a lot from it. But before into the light, I was having a really good time in PvP, got some streaks going in comp and hit ascendant and the games just felt fun, both in comp and qp

    It's not only high-skill lobbies, I'm a 1kd player and my matches suck, half the time is either a 5v5 or 5v6

    I left the pvp scene when they changed special ammo. Special ammo wasnt the problem for me it was certain classes/abilities. I want to use my shotgun as the opener in pvp (charge in, get a kill, take that good position, maybe follow-up with 2-3 kills with primary after that).
    The changes are just straight up not fun so ive been -1 pvp pop for months.

      Yeah I feel like they kinda killed some play styles through checkmate. I play solar warlock with a sniper as Icarus dash lets me change my positions fast and easily. But since checkmate special ammo changes have been implemented snipers just don't feel valuable anymore, as if you miss a shot due to bad aim or flinch, you won't get your bullet back. I really liked sniping in 6v6 game modes and hitting clips, but everyone seems to play back with scouts and pulses flinching me as soon as I peak a corner.

    Sometimes you need to tank your kd to get better matches. Idk what they did but after shadow keep the matchmaking got so terrible. Also I hate that they put clash in the comp mode it has 0 business being there! Countdown was a perfect comp mode and I wish it was back. Now before anyone says "comp isn't competitive anyway" I do not care my dude it's fun for me, but should be worrying to anyone who plays trials because whatever they try out in comp always goes to trials next and I pray y'all trials players don't get clash because it's awful as a 3v3 mode.

    My take is that I don’t believe there’s enough players that are at Cammy’s skill level that are willing to play in 6s. Maybe in competitive playlist or in trials, but it would seem significantly harder to cover for outliers when the number of outliers is under 1% for the large community playlists. Could be wrong, but I would be willing to bet most people sit in the 1.5-2.0 KD ratio and the top .5% would be 3.0-6.0 or higher and it’s really difficult to cover the 0.5% outliers in big playlists.

    Maybe it's because I play on console or Ive gotten worse at pvp but with terrible SBMM and Even worse lobby balancing plus very little access to special I can't stand playing pvp anymore previously when I had special I could at least feel good about getting multiple 3k's or 4k's a match even if I dropped a 1.5 or lower I was still getting 20-30 kills a match and have fun but now I drop 1.0 while my teammates struggle to break a .9 SBMM isn't working I shouldn't be getting back to back games where my teammate struggle to break a .9 while the entire enemy team has a 2.0+. SBMM needs to go Make a protected pool for the bottom whatever % then have open matchmaking for everyone else

    I'm an average (or even below average) pvp player , but still enjoy the game mode a lot. Until now, I've still been able to run off - meta fun load outs and not get stomped cos mostly the matchmaking was balanced. Recently its been unbelievably bad. I was playing 2 days ago amd went on a 12 match loss streak ( all of em were pubstomps ). Heck, the situation was like the average lobbies had (literally) double my KD, 3-4x my total kills, or were even people like Wallah or Hynra. It was usually so bad that I'd get insta-deleted by something so bad that most of the time i can't even conprehend how the hell am I actually dying. Matcmaking has been bad before, but nothing to this level, it's almost unplayable for me rn. Sorry for the rant.

    My thing is if they aren't gonna properly balance the sandbox or properly define what skilled destiny play is; how can we trust ANY form of SBMM they put in the game? I don't hate SBMM i FIRMLY believe that 10's should never match 4's and below (hard to manage when fireteams with a wide rating range queue together but SBMM should never be hard in casuals anyway) but if bungie says they want to bring skill back to crucible then actively makes changes to the sandbox that directly goes against that I don't trust anything they have to say about the sandbox, sbmm, or overall health of the game. Actions speak way louder than words and that stands regardless of what your preferred way to play pvp is. It doesn't take a degree to look at what's way more effective in crucible at the low end and the high end, what people are complaining about and why, and keeping fun but fair stuff in the sandbox and balancing around those things. If you want pvp to thrive you have to keep it fun and balanced. Cammy literally said it in the video, if the comp experience is healthy the sweats will mainly gravitate there instead of control feeling like a sweatfest. Bungie has alot of work to do to fix crucible but the players exclusively running (insert annoying sweaty meta loadout here) in every playlist like there's a million dollars on the line y'all are a big part of why crucible feels like ass and majority of players don't wanna touch it.

    as a middling skill player who is just good enough to run a low skill lobby but completely unable to hang in the waters surrounding even remotely high skill (or meta abusing) players, I played 10 matches this season that I genuinely enjoyed, around the time of into the light (probably due to the huge spike of players bringing brave weapons into pvp to try them out) but in the past 2 weeks it's been miserable. losing streaks of 6-10 games in a row where I am helpless and usually top score (if I don't see the writing on the wall and give up because my spirit to try having fun in these lobbies has been utterly shattered)

    Its been mercy or be mercied all season for me with a few high quality games sprinkled in. I used to play control to warmup for comp, now its the other way aroind. The matchmaking makes some games impossible, especially against K/D farming stacks. Blueberries cant handle a coordinated meta 6 stack.

    They should add an auto-play mode for PVP, like in a gacha game. Let the AI do its thing in my stead, then it can adjust "my" skill-level on the fly to make matches more even and I can do what I'm doing right now in PvP, not play at all but finally get my Jade Rabbit catalyst done.

    I think in PvP the community is too hard on abilities, a lot of people seem to gravitate towards not using abilities even though abilities are half the game, especially on warlock and titan yet the community is so full of hunters which are movement and gun based so they’ll just hate on any and every ability that does a bit of damage to them and bungie seems to slowly be killing off abilities too, I just play warlock so it’s annoying when the main thing about my class keeps getting nerfed like overall ability regen or threadling which were being abused by hunters which made them seem more broken since their abilities would summon them up close so you can’t run away as easily while warlocks summon them out of themselves so it’s easier to defend yet we all got threadlings nerfed, it’s both bungie and the people who praise guns and movement over abilities who destroy half of what makes destiny PvP

    I'm an avid pvp player (mostly control for fun). I'd say my skill is about a 6.5-7 out of 10. There are times when I see a match with two 3 stacks, one player in that fireteam has a blue weapon and immediately I know they will be placed on my team. Sometimes I do well in that situation despite the loss, but how is this fun for that guy when he's a new light or lacking effective gear?

    Just make sbmm based on kd/kda with margins if match is not found then add new 6v6/5v5 mode in trials or comp to bring more people in as there is incentive to play which is ranks and flawless counts. This will increase population and find matches way faster.

    I haven't been able to even turn on my xbox for a year and a half so watching you play pvp has helped me at least get prepared for what to expect when i get to play again when that may be. I don't think I'll be anywhere near as good when that day comes however you and your content helps me at least stay in the loop of things and i think you do a great job with everything you upload.
