Can you use Two different Graphics Cards at once

- One of my viewers has asked me whether it is possible to install 2 graphics cards on the same motherboard.
The short answer is yes, it is possible to run 2 graphics cards in tandem. But, it is a bit more complicated than just adding another RAM. Adding another graphics card for NVIDIA is called SLI and for AMD it's called Crossfire. Having 2 cheap graphics cards rather than just 1 expensive one could give you a better performance for less cost.
But, how can we make sure 2 graphics cards would work together?
Things to check are: 1) whether motherboard supports 2 graphics cards 2) whether the graphics cards support SLI or Crossfire. 3) whether the two graphics cards are compatible with each other 4) Whether the existing Power Supply Unit could supply the extra power requirement.
For NVIDIA, the two graphics should be identical. For example, if you got GTX 1080 Ti, you should buy another GTX 1080 Ti in order to make it work together! However, you can't buy a GTX 1080 without the Ti and combine it with GTX 1080 Ti. But they can be from different manufacturers. By the way, one of the most popular graphics card which is GTX 1060 doesn't support SLI! So, it's very important to check whether your graphics card does support SLI or Crossfire.
On the other hand, AMD provides more choices of compatible graphics card. Nevertheless, the AMD graphics cards have to be from the same series. For example, if you got a HD 6970, you could buy HD 6950 as both are from the same series.
If you want to learn more about the specific graphics cards that support SLI or Crossfire, please let me know in the comments below.
After successfully installing both the cards, you'd still need to go to your graphics card software and enable SLI or Crossfire.
After managing to pass through the above hurdles, the other things to consider before buying 2 graphics card are:
1) Having 2 graphics cards would obviously consume more power, which in turn would produce more heat and noise!
2) Unfortunately not all Games support SLI or Crossfire. This is because NVIDIA and AMD have to update their video card drivers to support new games.
3) There is a risk of micro stuttering. Meaning, the video could look a bit more choppy.
All in all, you'll have to do some tweaking on your side, to make sure the 2 graphics cards could run smoothly.
In my opinion. If you're building a new PC, then having one graphics card is a better choice. However, if you already got a comparatively good graphics card that support SLI or Crossfire, then adding the same graphics card might not be a bad option!
So, let me know in the comments below whether you think it is worth to have 2 graphics cards and why?

Update - Microsoft has developed something called "explicit multi-adaptor" that allows the use of AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards together since the development of DirectX 12. However, not all games developed to support DirectX 12. I suggest you to first check the games you want to play whether they support DirectX 12. Also, make sure you got a powerful enough CPU, PSU! It's still gonna be tricky though

Sir can you make a channel in hindi if ylu know
I have 2x GTX 1060 6gb from different manufacturer and I have used both on my Tomahawk max motherboard for mining(1 month only) and video rendering without any extra setting but I was wondering if it could also work for gaming without sli because I recently started playing God of War PC and I only get 30-50 fps on original setting but I was hoping if pairing 2 would increase the quality and FPS. If anyone has an idea then please reply !!!
I just got this computer do i need another graphic card im so upset im just learning about it
Dell XPS 8940 11th Gen Intel Core i7-11700 8-Core Processor,32GB DDR4,1TB SSD,Intel UHD Graphics
is it possible for me to add a nividia GT 9500 and a GTX 545 together on the same motherboard?
Dude only 1 game supports it
Straight forward, cuts to the chase and informative. Well done!
Thanks and welcome!
agree
That was a really good video and I loved how you clearly and concisely laid out the pros and cons. Keep up the great work brother.
Best video I have ever watched on RUclips. Just straight forward, explain really good as well. I been researching about hardware and I have learned nothing from popular channel. This guy deserve more sub.
Wow! That's one of the best compliments that I've ever received. Thanks 🙏

That means you might be able get them work together for Windows 10 and some of the games that support directX12 (the way forward). Important thing is to check whether your graphics cards support DirectX 12! All the best!
Thanks alot! My friend has an AMD and Nvidia which are of 1 and 2gb (older models). They'll work together ? doesn't support sli or crossfire
I’m at a loss for words. Came here thinking I was going to start a journey of videos and websites looking for answers. Nope. All of it here. In one video. Straight to the point. Got me.
Your comment is very poetic - thanks 🙏
Thanks for answering all my questions in this video! I am in the process of updating my build and have older AMD 7950. I'd like a newer card to run newer games and was seriously thinking of just popping in the newer NVIDIA without extra thought LOL!
Glad I could help and thanks for your wonderful comment!
Dude thank you for your input, it seams like 1 card is the way to go, thank you for your time and honest opinion.
Glad it was helpful! Yes, one 1 card is the wisest choice.
Salute the man didn't ask for a sub and like ❤️ I subscribed instantly 👍
Thanks a lot 🙌 I appreciate it!
This bro is so honorable
If they dont say that. RUclips wont push there content. So it kinda kills the point of making content if no ones watching
I subbed because of your comment 👏 much respect to you both ❤️
Why you sound like electroboom 😂
No he doesn't, I grew up with him.
Electro boom is Persian. This guys Indian I think and their language is super similar to Farsi (Persian), the comedian mahz jobrani sounds the same
@liamsparling I'm persian like both mehdi and mazyae which you mentioned. persian and Hindu are quite different languages yet we have like a couple similarities in general. persians usually have this slow-paced tone when speaking English, while Indians I'd rather say pronounce words differently in english sometimes like pronouncing most "t"s like "d"s and fact and rushed grammar. and it's not poor education or anything, it's just their native accent which carries over from their mother tongue. have a great day!
I THINK THE POSSIBILITY IS: have lower end card for windows connected to display 1 in pcie 4.0 1x, in pci e 16x have high end card connected to display 1 100% for game, because windows uses sometimes 1gb+ vram and thats lot.
Damn, man actually answered all my questions in a video, i feel like thats never been done, thank you
You're most welcome. I'm glad I was able to answer all your questions.
Straight to the point. Thank you
You're most welcome!
Dude you’d make a great model. Perfect head shape, hair, jawline, and that award winning smile. Keep up the great work with these vids.
Absolutely amazing video, I had a general question on whether its better to run 2 graphics cards and instead of having to watch a 30 min video ur 4 min video explained it really well and answered my question. Thank you :))
Glad I could help!
This is a great video, great explanation, to the point. This question has been in my mind all day. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Very useful explanation! Straight to the point! Thanks!
I'm glad you liked it!
Thank you, even tho it's an "old" video thank you for your input it's all important information to know and it was quick too, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
bro your hair is amazing. so shiny and thick!!! such beautiful hair
Thank you so much 😀 Well noticed. It's so thick that I've to reduce its volume with a special scissor 😂
bro you deserved a like and subs you perfectly explain everything damn
Thanks! Subscribing is the best way to support my channel 🙏
Thank you. This information was very useful. I didn't know most of it.
Glad it was helpful! So, what is your conclusion - 2 or 1 graphics card?
One strong but a good one. This will leave me with the option of having a second strong one coupled to it later.
Yeah Very True. It has to be 2 1080 Ti's Together a Ti with a Vanilla 1080 won't be Compatible. You'd be Surprised How Many Vendor Shops will B.S Customers saying; "Oh, Just Buy 2 Cards and it'll Power Your Game!" No, it'll Only Power 1 App/Game At A Time Per Card.
Yes, you got to do your own research. Thanks for your example - very useful!
damn I was hoping this would be longer I enjoyed the video and I just picked up the x570 ROG crosshair VIII DARK HERO and wouldn't mind in the future adding 2 gpus but I need to find a good case preferably mid tower but most likely will need a full tower.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! All the best with your future plans 🙌
my question is does it increase the vram
lets say i have 710 geforce ddr5 with 2gb ram and 710 geforce ddr3 with 1gb
will it give me 3gb ram?
Short to the point!
Love it.
You're most welcome!
Apparently, NVidia is phasing SLI out and is requesting developers to code into their application the use of multiple GPUs.
That makes more sense. With RAMs you could just insert additional RAMs into the motherboard slot but why not with the GPUs. LLM that are used by AI use a lot of GPUs, & I think that could be one of the reasons for Nvidia want them to better communicate with each other.
what i dont want them to work together and i just want 2 different gpus to do 2 different things at tihe same time
question what power supply voltage goes well with 2 radeon 6000 seres? I'm using 6700 and a 6600 with a 850w 80 plus gold is this good enough?
you talk so clear is painfull haha
I donot want to run the cards together but run 3 games on one card and three games on the other using two monitors
There's a program that forces split screen for certain games but requires 2 instances of the game wondering about adding a card instead of upgradibg it
Thanks for the free education dude! Appreciate it.
Any time!
There is no point to use 2 graphic cards at once if most of games can't support crossfire or SLI.... 😂😂😂
thanks for saving my money bro...
You're most welcome! Exactly 👍
@@bhupindertube your English is very good and easy to understand... I like the way of your talking 👍
Thank you for this video. Makes it all clear in just a couple of minutes.
Glad it was helpful! Yes, no need to go round & round & talk about irrelevant topics. We can talk about irrelevant topics here 😅
Thanks for not bullshiting me! very well done info
You're most welcome! 😅
you can use dual GPU setups without sli support, but it won't work in games. You can use it for GPU COMPUTE though. or use one as a dedicated video encoder
You crushed my idea to add the a770 to my old rig.
Very helpful, subscribed
Thanks for the sub!
WHOA! That hair is Johnny Bravo incredible. Bravo.
Thanks 😂
where was this video when i was building my pcc???!?
hey man, thanks.
seriously
I've been learning a lot from you
Happy to hear that!
Thank you for sharing this video and knowledge!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Thanks for the video!
You're welcome!
Nice video dude , can I use 2070 and 3080 at the same time ? And would that makes a big difference?
no because games nowadays dont support SLI or Crossfire making it useless.
Tsym! This helped a bunch!
You're most welcome 👍
Great summary. Keep up the good work!!
Thanks, will do!
Thank you for stopping me from opening my machine. I have two gpu, but they are different makes.
liked instantly, very streamlined info.
rich youtubers taking notes for their new dual GTX 3090
i cant seem to find a definitive answer to if a 3060 ti will crossfire with another 3060 ti... would love if you could help me with that
I need to buy more graphics card in order to fill up the money from cheap to expensive
Can two 3090 TI provide SLI feature?
yes but make sure you have a good cpu mobo and sufficient power
It seems modern games don't support dual GPU anymore, I still remember dual card is popular in late-2000s.
Microsoft has developed something called "explicit multi-adaptor" that allows the use of AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards together since the development of DirectX 12. However, not all games developed to support DirectX 12. I suggest you to first check the games you want to play whether they support DirectX 12. Also, make sure you got a powerful enough CPU, PSU! It's still gonna be tricky though
Thanks bhai because I just bought 3090 today and i already using 3080 I was thinking if I can use both cards as dual set up for multiple screens
Show off? Or what😢
thanks, nice quick good quality info video
Glad it was helpful!
So basically I cannot connect my zotac gtx 1660ti with my new zotac rtx 3060?
what about using 2 different graphic card at the same time ?
for example: i like to use my RTX 3060 for modern games, but i also want to use a GTX 550 for older games.
in that way, every game should run with a gpu that was intended to run the type of games...
ty so much for this video my bro
My pleasure
Thanks for clearing my confusion
Any time!
Dadash 🔥😍
If I’ve got a 2060 ti and buy a 3080 ti they wouldn’t be compatible? I’m just looking to upgrade my pc for smoother editing and I didn’t wanna entirely waste a 2060 if I could avoid it
Thank you, you helped me with my decision
You're most welcome! May I know what's your verdict? All the best.
I like the way this guy says graphics cards
Awesome, thanks
Welcome 🙏
Bro can you do a video tutorial for men in their 30s maintaining healthy hair.
Just don't use any styling hair products 😅 My hairs are extra ordinary thick.
Thank you for just spitting the facts. Very helpful! thank you
Bro i like ur explanation its so clearly. Nice content
Can I run two nvidia strix gtx 980s together on an crossfire motherboard?
GTX 980 supports both DirectX 12 and SLI. Hence, you should be able to run together.

Hello I am running a RX 580 AMD, can I combine wit RX 550 AMD?? Please help me out..
I was thinking if you can use 3DFX Voodoo and NVIDIA GeForce together at the same time.
if nvidia and amd doesnt know how to run 2 gpu for everything it means they know nothing about technology
Sir can i use 1 nvidia gt 730 4gb and rx580 8gb on same system?please reply sir😢...btw i love your videos❤🎉
This video is so gooood keep posting plz🔥
Thanks for your kind comment 🙏
you didn't even touch the scenario where they would work independently. for example i run a 3060 for phyton (machine learning) while i play games on my 2070.
I agree. I think it's a valid and important point!
is it possible for me to add a nividia GT 9500 and a GTX 545 together on the same motherboard?
I am planning to build a cloned PC, on the other hand, I want CUDA and at the same time, I want to run Wayland Compositor - todate, Wayland doesn't support NVIDIA Graphics cards. In this situation, what is your opinion as I can enjoy GPU accelarated Deep Learning and Wayland desktop?
your accent is hilarious but just awesome :D nice video!
im trying to install a seccond gpu which is a 3070 on my PC. i already have on 3080ti installed. I have enough power but after installation, there is a lag when I move my mouse and frequent crashes. I tried removing all drivers and doing a fresh install with DDU. my motherboard is asus rog strix x570 E.... Please let me know what I'm doing wrong. could it be something with pcie lane support?
can we put 2 different graphic cards, but only use one for gaming and using the other one for video editing ? so when we play games we are using 1 graphic card and whe nwe do video rending we can use the second one , is this possible ?
Oh well, what a shame. I have a GTX 1060 Dual OC since 2016. I was planning on selling it, but then I got the idea of buying an used X99-A II, an i7-6950X , 8 White Corsair Vengeance 8Gb DDR4 Memory Sticks and another GTX 1060 Dual OC I found online and build a matching PC. Since it doesn't support SLI I'm just gonna sell it and move on.
ok I stumbled on this. I have a M2000 and a P620 been running it like this for multiple screens on my work pc. What would the advantage be (if its already working) of matching the cards so they are identical? also Currently looks like the GPU processing is done on each card depending on what screen I am rendering the videos from so Would SLI combine them to be seen as 1 card as I kinda like that my videos don't interfere with my imagine apps that use the other card
Why Indian PPL are best in IT, AI ,etc.?
I am from Poland and i dont know.
Hello Bhupinder! Can I use 3090 and 1080 ti? Please explain... Thank you!
I love how you say card

I have a 1080Ti and would like to add additional one. Does the 2nd GPU need to be the exact 1080Ti make as the one I already have, or can it be from different manufacturers/make? I will really appreciate your help on this. Thx
First step is to check whether 1080Ti support SLI. I checked it for you and it does support. Back to your question, for NVIDIA you should use the identical graphics card, that is another 1080Ti.
