Excellent! I used to co-wash daily, but not for a very long time. Daily wash, followed by oil, and then butter on rare occasions if needed. Subscribed.
@@EmbraceTheBeardLife do you ever go some days where you do nothing at all? Just rinse with water in the shower. Sometimes I feel like I'm doing too much to my beard and want to have days where I do nothing
100% facts. I’ve been washing my beard daily for a year now. Never use a conditioner. You can only do that as long as you use your oils and butters daily. A clean beard does absorb the oils and butters much better. My beard is soft and my skin feels amazing. Everything is balanced and comfortable. I can only see a use for conditioner if you are not using oils and butters on the daily. Good video. Great points.
Interesting take on the co-wash! Refreshing to see somebody take a stand against the conditioner propaganda machine that seems to plague most of the other mainstream channels (yeah I'm talking to you Dan). Just a heads-up up my man..I think you forgot to cut out the last 5 sloppy seconds 🙌
Haha I always try to put some bloopers at the end. I appreciate that you enjoyed the video. I stand by everything I say here. Thanks for watching Michael!
Yeah, this makes sense to me. I remember in one of your videos you mentioned that if you were to put beard butter in after using a conditioner, it felt tacky. I had the same experience. Thank you for staying true to your perspective, experience, and discovery and sharing that honestly with us and not just following the trends and the status quo of what every other beard channel is saying and going with and/or hyping without question. I appreciate this and it brings a fresh and free-thinking perspective. So thank you for that.
I have an older, coarse white beard...and it aborbs just about anything I throw into it. I have no problems with co -washing followed by oil, butter or balm. Once a week I use purple products to keep the beard pure white. Obviously, everyone is different and all these reviews must keep that in mind.
Amazing video Josh, I have also stopped co washing its been a couple months now. Ive noticed all of the exact points you've brought up. I wash Mon thru Fri due to my job. My beard has never felt better by stopping co wash and I also stopped using heat on my beard a couple months ago.
I was almost daily (4-5 times a week) and most of those times I condition along side the wash. I think a lot of people are scared to wash more than 1 or 2 times a week. If you have a nice mild wash ( LCW for example ) You can wash much more often. In doing so you can strip away extra and left over products. I don’t really get behind just co washing. Great vid as always.
I have a mostly gray beard, and I do co-wash on the days on don't fully wash it out. I feel like my beard needs it, but not every beard will, and I only use a small amount of conditioner. I do also use a pine tar soap bar on my beard once per week though, just to fully strip it of all products, and I would highly recommend everyone do that, if you use products daily on your beard, you do really need that reset every so often.
Nice that you sharing your experience. I have changed my routine since the summer. I only use conditioner once a month maybe twice tops. I can honestly say i have noticed a substantial difference and my beard feels, looks and styles better than before ( more natural if that makes sence ). I plan to continue that way 😎✌️
I wash my beard every day i work. And just use conditioner like once or twice. Just don’t be having the time sometimes. And you def right. Certain products i do use if i skip a day when i wash my beard be feeling like trash. Especially after a day of wearing a mask. Then when i wash it and strip it out then don’t condition my beard just be feeling good
Josh, Hey Brother. I have a predominately gray beard and I have low porosity, so I hardly ever use a conditioner, maybe once a month. I use a wash daily due to workouts, I then use oil after my shower. I only apply butter at nighttime for overnight condition. This process makes my beard soft and my skin moisturized. Thanks for sharing and the opportunity to share. 🤓👍❤️
I was using Co-wash pretty consistently. I cut down on the co wash and went to bar soaps more often. I have noticed a difference in the fullness of my beard too, even with my grey beard.
I’m really glad you made this video. After watching this video I realized why my beard would feel weighed down or over saturated.... Now I know, that damn co-wash 😤.. Thank you for offering advice to improve my routine!
I can attest to this. I have a coarse curly beard and my beard only absorbs so much oil or conditioner. When I use an excess, I can feel the products just sitting on top of my beard hair and just looks super greasy.. less product works better for my beard 🧔🏽
Interesting. I do think some beardsmen, myself included, get caught up in trying so many products, not only for performance but scent. So much focus on scent. Maybe if your favorite company's butter, oil, had a pump spray of their scents for days when you go no beard products? Wait, is this a thing already? I've either said this before or read it somewhere. Still. Good idea. Cheers Josh.
You are absolutely correct just to much product weighing down the beard we need to use maybe oil one day by itself butter by it self balm by it self and sometimes go unplugged no products to let the hair follicles breath companies want you to smash all this products together so you can be buying more often and they be making more money
I’ve actually never used LCW I need to pick some up. I enjoy Detroit grooming because it’s in the middle for me. Strips enough but not too much. Honyocker makes a great daily wash and I’m testing out another companies now that will probably sell soon that works really well.
Conditioner and balm worked well for me. But any more products than that I started to get skin problems. I recently trimmed my beard back a lot and started to just treat my skin better and the hair seems to take care of itself.
So, conditioner made your beard feel dry? I get the oversaturation thing, but I didn't understand that 'dry and curly' comment then say "if your beard is dryer than say someone like me" use a conditioner more often. Not picking this apart or anything, just trying to understand. I like the experiment and I'm all for it (the what), just not clear on reasoning (the why).
I was trying to say when I wash my beard and don’t use conditioner. It fluffs out and feels dry but it’s a good thing because the oil and butter works better and without using the conditioner my beard isn’t weighed down as much. I need to go re watch make sure I didn’t screw up the edit lol
I have a love/hate relationship with beard washes and conditioners. Either I have a super dry beard from washing it, or I have product build up from all the oils and butters if I just rinse it daily. I still haven't found that "one method" that works consistently for me. It's like the stars have to align or something. LOL
Appreciate the video and guidance Josh. Going to try the wash 4-5 times a week and condition 1-2 days a week. What are your thoughts if you use a pine tar soap? Do I need a conditioner after because of the stripping agent? Are their different types of conditioners that are lighter on the conditioning agents?
Sure thing man! Lots of great questions here. I would say its a balance and proper balance is the key. If you use pine tar, try going with a conditioner and maybe no butter or balm after. The goal is to use less but maintain the softness that you want. there are for sure "lighter" conditioners and "heavy" conditioners. I'll have to investigate more and maybe make a video on them. Thanks for the comment!
I wash Monday-Friday and use a conditioner twice a week, but never by itself. I always wash first! Every 2 weeks I’ll use a stripping wash to reset. I typically like to use Detroit grooming wash twice in a single shower to strip my beard. Ps. What butter did you use in the video?
Yes, that is my suggestion. Try dropping a cowash day for a rinse day or wash only day with no conditioner. I find that for my beard, cowashing does nothing but hinder my beard oil and beard butter from working as well. By doing this my beard also has more volume because the products aren’t so layered on my beard hairs. I don’t co wash at all any more and haven’t in a long time. Try it and let me know your thoughts! It might not be for everyone 👊🏻
This is an interesting take on co-wash. My beard is more grey than brown now and I co-wash two to three times a week. I have tried the no co-wash approach, but just find that my beard feels better with it in the mix. Do you think the beard wash you use makes a difference? Some are more stripping than others are and not really an every day or every other day type of thing.
the beard wash you use makes a difference for sure. I only use a really stripping wash like twice a week at most. The lighter the wash the more product that will be let on your beard. Grey hairs are also a bit different and I am not as familiar with the care for them. I stick with a good daily wash most times. Thanks for the comment!
