- Get ready to dust off your dancing shoes! This year marks the 30th anniversary of polka being officially declared Wisconsin's state dance on April 21st, 1994.
In this video, we celebrate Wisconsin's rich polka heritage with fun facts, historical tidbits, and of course, some iconic polka tunes! We'll take a trip down memory lane with classics like "Tell Me Sincerely" by Romy Gosz, crank it up with the ever-popular "The Beer Barrel Polka (Roll Out the Barrel)" in Frank Yankovic's version, and get a taste of modern polka with "Meisner Magic" by Steve Meisner.
So grab a partner, put on your favorite polka outfit (or just your dancing shoes!), and join the party! Let's polka our way through Wisconsin's love for this lively dance.

This might have to be my favorite vlog of yours, having grown up in Wisconsin. 😉 Thank you for all the history.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
Thank you for this historical review! As a proud Wisconsinite I have danced to many of those performers at festivals, weddings & parties.
There's so many wonderful polka bands from Wisconsin it was hard to limit the discussion to just this 5 minute video!
Thanks so much for the Wisconsin Polka history Alex! And I am an Iron Ranger from Minnesota! BTW, I really perked up when you mentioned COPPERBOX! they played at Ironworld around the same time you played there with your Dad late 90s early 2000s . What a fantastic group! spent some time with them and shot some pics for them . I really miss those days! I still hope to see you perform again! Duluth MN being the only chance that can happen.
It's been so long since I've been up on the range-- and those sure are great memories at Ironworld!
I love this, Alex! You have such a wonderful way of making this genre's history accessible and interesting. I hope you do more videos with a historical perspective. Thank you!
I'm hoping to do more like this-- it's quite a bit of work, but I enjoy the research and sharing the knowledge.
Nice one! I’ll mention this and link to the video when we do a Polka celebration episode of Accordions Noir Radio this week to commemorate the Wisconsin anniversary 🪗💃🏽🪩🕺🏽
