      Dates are the sticky component in raw desserts, but if you don't like them you could do any dried fruit you like. You just might need to add water or honey to help it stick together. I'm a fan of figs myself!

    I just made this and I'm eating it right now and it's DELICIOUS. This is not only my FIRST fully raw recipe, it's also my first time EVER using a food processor. The crust didn't come out quite like cookie dough - it was more ooey gooey - but wow, this is delicious! I don't miss the sugar AT ALL. I do miss the warmth of a baked apple pie. But if you go into this recipe thinking "delicious apple-date-fig dessert" you will be blown away, and it did taste surprisingly like pie!

  • @aguedadelcastillo2592
    @aguedadelcastillo2592 10 лет назад +5

    I´ve watched this video at least 8 times in the past weeks just to keep my mind wondering how amazing it'd be to prepare once I had my food processor. I finally got one for Christmas and today I've used it on this recipe. I made small variations over the original recipe. I made the crust with dried figs, dates and also dried mulberries. For the cream, I follow the original and also added a banana in the mixture so it gets even creamier. Also banana works pretty good with cinnamon. My only recommendation if you try this at home is dont sliced the apples at the beginning. Leave that task by the end, otherwise you'll end up with a bunch of rotten finely sliced apples. They oxidize really fast,getting darker and tasting a bit like apple cyder vinegar. And I was quite fast slicing with the food processor! great taste in the end, though! thanks!

    Thank you for inviting us in on the challenge. You got 2 of us with the invitation you sent to me. My mother's life has been extended because of the raw diet. I ate close to 100% raw for about 5 months before putting my mom on this diet. I just wanted to make sure it was not going to be too difficult for her. I never felt better in my life, so about 4 yrs ago, I put my mom on the diet. Sadly the stress of life has made it difficult to stick with it for myself. But I have never forgotten how good I felt on it, and have always intended to return to a high raw diet. AND I have ALWAYS loved your bright and positive approach. So, I welcome the opportunity to return to high raw in January, with your cheery presentations to encourage us along. Bring it on girl!

    Im just curious about the math here ... Normal "American" apple pie is 3288cal, 457g sugar in 1 whole normal 9" pie (~411cal/slice). This "healthy" alternative packs in 5572 cals, 1192g sugar in the same diameter pie (this is using the less 3lbs of dates, if you use 4lbs add another 414 calories/93g sugar). That means if you cut this raw pie in the typical 8 slices, that is 696cals/slice ... nearly 86% of the calories are from pure sugar. I don't understand the logic here...

    • @futurevideo10
      @futurevideo10 11 лет назад +1

      It's best to make sure the correct amount of carbohydrates including sugars are consumed per day(probably should be about 1/3 of these per meal). Medical studies show that *more than 80% of the adult population has glucose levels that are too high*. Most of these people are not diagnosed with diabetes, but just by having high-normal fasting glucose (over 85 mg/dL), *risk of death from cardiovascular disease increases by 40%* according to a long-term study conducted on close to 2,000 people.
      Here's a good article to read, it has an excellent calorie calculator to find out the right amounts of macronutrients for any person.
      How Many Carbohydrates Do I Need Each Day?

      @wrouillie 11 лет назад +1

      True, but who says you have to treat it the same as you would a normal pie? If you're like me, stuff like this is a great alternative to the junky versions. You indulge, but you don't ingest chemicals, and you are in greater control of what you're eating. Great recipe Kristina! Seems like for every concept there are extreme viewpoints. I'm taking the middle of the road, eaten this pie, but in moderation...

      That’s because there is no logic here, just the dogma that fruit, veggie, raw automatically = healthy. The glucose conversion and insulin spikes/drops are completely ignored.
      If I ate so many carbs (regardless if they’re from veggies and fruits), I’d have hypoglycemia and need to eat something every 4-5 hrs or I’d be shaky and dizzy.

    • @noel13420white

      Fruit sugar is different from regular sugar. You should check out her video on that.

    • @GpD79
      @GpD79 9 лет назад +24

      +Noel White Sugar is sugar, regardless if it's from a date, a maple tree, sugar cane, honey, banana, corn, etc. They may be different on the glycemic index, but that primarily concerns those with diabetes. Too much sugar, regardless of where it comes from, isn't good for you. I try my darndest to have a no added sugar diet, as some sugars found in whole foods are necessary for good health, but loading a dish with whole food ingredients that are high in sugars, is no different than simply adding the ingredient sugar to the dish. Your body doesn't know any different. 42 grams of sugar is 42 grams of sugar, regardless of its source.

    • @brooklynthebody
      @brooklynthebody 9 лет назад +17

      +GpD79 you are incorrect. sugar is not sugar. There is Simple sugar (from fruit) that your body craves and uses for enery, and there is complex sugar that your body has no medical necessity for. These complex sugars are the ones you want to avoid, but simple sugars were meant to be eaten in abundance!!
      As far as your diabetes comment, you are misinformed there too. Sugar is not the CAUSE of diabetes, it's the SYMPTOM of diabetes. High sugar is what the body pumps out when the insulin it naturally produces can't reach the cells because they are surrounded by so much fat, so you get insulin resistance, aka as high blood sugar.
      I'm diabetic and I too was skeptical. But I am following her plan (80/10/10 Raw Vegan) and in 1 DAY, after just 1 MEAL, my numbers went from 158 to 105 just 2 hours after eating 8 bananas!!! lol.
      This is truly the best plan out there!! I wouldn't knock it until you try it! 😉

    • @GpD79
      @GpD79 9 лет назад +2

      +Cyndi M Thank you for your thoughtful response. I do not disagree with most of your statements. In fact, if you read my post more carefully, we are almost saying the same thing. I also never said that diabetes was caused by sugar, I simply was referring to the glycemic index as being something that is primarily concerned by those with diabetes.
      Look at what I said though, "Too much sugar, regardless of where it comes from, isn't good for you." I am a big believer in eating healthy and this includes eating LOTS of fruits and vegetables. Having said that , this recipe, while tasty looking, is loaded with sugar. Also, as a diabetic, you know that it is not only a sugar thing you have to worry about, it's carbohydrates. So yeah, if you eat 8 bananas, but take away the sufficient number of carbohydrates during a meal, it's an even swap and you'll be fine.
      Ultimately, we have a different diet approach. I try to have a no added sugar diet, but when you swap out added sugar for dried figs and dates, it's still a lot of sugar. (Yes I do concede that sugar from fruit is the ideal form of sugar to be eaten, as you're not just taking in sugar, but also the water, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytonutrients.) I'd rather just avoid all of the "extra" and just have an apple, some berries, or a banana instead as part of my meal.

    • @soojincho2829

      @@brooklynthebody fruit sugars may not cause insulin to fluctuate as much but it isn't free calories and it all still ends up in your bloodstream. If you don't metabolize it off you WILL gain weight plus this sugar and a lot of the fruit acids she eats will do a number on your teeth if you aren't diligent with oral hygiene.

    glucose and fructose are different molecules, but they're both sugars. If you're diabetic, for example, your liver fails to process BOTH. Which is a nice invitation to moderation even when you eat fructose :)
    If they weren't both sugars, I'd say to my diabetic friend "well have a truckload of dates and forget real apple pie forever!". But the truth is I can't, because sugar is sugar and will always be. Chemistry is science, not a lifestyle or choice.

She went to the doctor afterwards and asked the doctor his thoughts in a cleanse and he strongly oppossed and told her NOOOOO don't do it the fruit will be to much sugar..Little did he know she had already done it! FRUIT SUGAR IS NOT THE SAME AS OREO COOKIES your body can take fruit sugar not the other crap ...The industry of medicine has us questioning fruit against cake...Come on now

      My blood sugar went down dramatically too after eating a mostly fruit-based diet!! I was skeptical at first too, but your body needs dimple sugars to be healthy.

    I wondered how you got those apples soooo thinly sliced! (I imagine mandolin, which you mentioned!) HOWEVER....How did you keep them from browning??? (Maybe a 6th ingredient...lemon juice?)

    • @fullyrawkristina8586
      @fullyrawkristina8586 11 лет назад +8

      I hand sliced these, and it took FOREVER, and after that I definitely recommend a mandolin slicer! :o) Freezing the pie keeps it from browning. You can spritz a little lemon on it, but it changes the flavor a bit.

      +joybmassa A tip: if you slice apples and put them in water with just a bit of lemon squeezed into the water, it will prevent the slices from browning...and it won't really impact the flavor. And yes! I agree with Kristina...a mandolin for this recipe! (I found an inexpensive model on Amazon for $16 but it works very well! I also got a cut glove to be safe)

    • @BrelynnHeart

      Soak them in sparkling water for a few minutes to keep them from Browning without adding any additional flavors :)

      maybe she's "over the top enthusiastic" because she eats a fully raw diet which tends to bring the best in us. You may surprise yourself just how enthusiastic you will be should you eat a fully raw diet, as it is, you can't share in the same spirit with her. :)

    It's bizarre to me that so many people have successfully been convinced that fruit sugar works in a way that it doesn't. It's also bizarre to me that so many people somehow don't understand that you're making these recipes for a very specific dietary group. If you were eating more than 10% of your calories from fat everyday, then this much sugar would in fact be a problem, but your diet is very conscientious. Any time I've eaten 80/10/10 and gotten enough calories, it's been so wonderful. You're the only reason I ever get enough calories because you give me ideas of high calorie foods to eat when I run out of ideas.

    Wouldn't this just fall apart when you try to cut it, with all the thinly sliced apples just sliding around on the filling, with nothing around them to hold them in place? Also, wouldn't this apple pie be really crunchy since the apples haven't been cooked at all?

    • @CeeBee781
      @CeeBee781 9 лет назад +4

      Jean Kirstein HAHA No pie regrets! Seriously, I am not going to die thinking... Why didn't I eat more warm, gooey, delicious pie? ALL Kristina's dessert recipes are friggin frozen to force them to hold their shape. It's like, why is freezing everything acceptable but cooking isn't? Whenever you cook something, some nutrients will be degraded, but others will be enhanced. You aren't going to become deficient eating a mixture of cooked and raw plant foods for God's sake.
