Although we can see that he is on the limit of his range here... That may be the reason why I haven't seen much live performances of this music in the original key (I prefer the lower ones, though, his low register is beautiful) .
This mans voice is as smooth as butter that's been sitting out on the table all day in mid July. One of the greatest I've heard in a very long time. Powerful lyrics that paint a very vivid, realistic portrait. Beautiful masterpiece.
What I love about the lyrics is that his lover is a giggle at funeral, know's everyone's disapproval and is heavens last true mouthpiece. Totally refreshing list of things to worship in a woman (he does say she in the song).
Jesus! He is INCREDIBLE!!!! I've heard every recording of everything I can find he has out, and I'm constantly blown away. What a human masterpiece he is! ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
This song is not about sexual disposition. The video was directed by Brendan Canty, not Andrew Hozier-Byrne. Hozier states to The Irish Times, "I found the experience of falling in love or being in love was a death, a death of everything. You kind of watch yourself die in a wonderful way, and you experience for the briefest moment - if you see yourself for a moment through their eyes - everything you believed about yourself gone. In a death-and-rebirth sense." I bring this up because now a narrow segment of the populace is planting a flag in a song that is about the universal human experience of love, and every discussion thereby descends into hate.
Hate to burst your bubble, but it is in fact about sex. Here is direct quote from his Q&A with NYMag: "'Take Me to Church' is essentially about sex, but it's a tongue-in-cheek attack at organizations that would … well, it's about sex and it's about humanity, and obviously sex and humanity are incredibly tied." Look up his interview with NYMag.
MrTwiizz No bubble to burst. Read my comment again; I specifically refuted the notion that this song is about sexual disposition (sexuality and gender identity, sexual preference, etc). "She tells me 'worship in the bedroom" makes it perfectly clear that the love in question is sexual. My irritation comes from the flames wars that now arise in every comment section about homosexuality, when the song is written in very broad, universal terms. A song about sexual love now evokes endless ideological bickering, and I think the director of the video diminished the broader appeal of the song just to score political points.
The reason why I told you to look up the interview is because he specifically mentions the churches views against homosexuality was one of the biggest inspirations for the song. Here is another direct quote from the same interview on the meaning of the song: "Sexuality, and sexual orientation - regardless of orientation - is just natural. An act of sex is one of the most human things. But an organization like the church, say, through its doctrine, would undermine humanity by successfully teaching shame about sexual orientation - that it is sinful, or that it offends God."
absolutely perfect in every way. You sound exactly the same when you're live as you do mastered and I cannot get over your music. Lyrics, musical skill, chilling and provocative sound... perfect, perfect, perfect!
@@tuckerlacey9909 I think he had a bit more longevity than that. The whole hozier 2014 album had great streams overall average around 390 million per track on Spotify. Subsequent projects haven’t been as famous though
Something about this song makes me cry :(:(:(:( as a mother of a gay horse, always hoping the world will treat her the same, like someone who is just in love... Hopefully she can be like all the other horses out there
I heard this for the first time the other day, googled the lyrics and realised then that someone had essentially captured my entire feelings of organised religion in 4 min of music. I'm not an atheist, I believe there is a God however I have no time for a religion that tells me that love is only acceptable in certain terms, that rights should be different based on sex or that some things should be swept under the carpet for the sake of the whole. The hypocrisy of it is at the very least unbelievably frustrating, at the worst it costs peoples lives- figuratively and literally. That's my read on it- I I fcking love the song for giving me that insight.... u know you've got a great song when you can get that sort of reflection..... my humble opinion anyway
It's not very often I buy a CD without listening to the entire song list, but half way I knew I wouldn't be disappointed and I'm not. Love his voice. Initially, I thought he was Aloe Blacc, who also has a great voice.
After hearing this song weeks ago, find myself searching Radio channels to catch it.....it is beautiful in that Hosier is Irish as myself and his power in words make you stand tall...Some call him the next Elton John that is alright perhaps even better. We are all searching to stay with the Roots we have come from and have not really changed as we need and want to hold to a Culture, we are ingrained with.
The video of this song makes reference to homosexual people but listening to this song with out seeing the music video first it could also be about mixed race/faith relationships as well. This song to me isn't only about homosexual but all people who want to get in a relationship that their religion doesn't agree with.
No, the song is simply a jab at religion, whether a man is simply sleeping with his girlfriend or if a person is in a homosexual relationship it is viewed as a sin. So basically he is saying that what the church believes is lies (worship at the shrine of your lies), and that all church people are judgmental (i'll confess my sins and you'll sharpen you knife). It is a great song, as far as music and vocals and lyrics being used together, very powerful, not as powerful live though, he seems a bit shy or something, But that being said it is a sad song because much of religion is like he describes in this song, but as a follower of Jesus Christ I take offense to the lyrics because I know what Hozier is saying is not what Jesus taught. Love your neighbor as yourself. All of us are sinful (we were born sick), let he who has no sin cast the first stone. Obviously Hozier does not believe we were born sick (sinful). Obviously he has been hurt deeply in his life by church people, as many of us have.
you people are are all idiots reading in to things like it has some hidden meaning like catcher in the rye telling you to kill john linnon.. the song is what it is for who ever its for not some secret code for homosexuals and straight people to go to church ..lmfao
This song is so soul-stirring, soul-searching and reaches deep, deep down to “Core” of any who really listens to its lyrics! A musical masterpiece🖤🖤🖤🎻🥁🎼🎤🎤
I know it's a shallow thing to say but he's so charming with his soft voice, nice hands, beautiful hair, serious face and even with his uneven teeth. Fortunately I liked him as a musician first, that may decreases the shallowness of my comment :)
Holy shit! In the original key! I hadn’t seen one until now. All the other performances were transposed a couple steps... He is phenomenal... I don’t know how he can keep his voice in the high tesitura without fatigue... I’m a Tenor and this song wears me out.
If anyone read his original comments on the song, it's about love in general. Period. About love and expressing your sexuality. He stated-long before this song blew up-that it's not about heterosexuality or homosexuality. He only capitalized on the LGBT angle when it became popular. It's not an invalid viewpoint but it would be so refreshing to see people understand his simple message of the consuming power of love REGARDLESS of sexuality, rather than dissolve into really pathetic arguments about religion and gays. Stop being so basic people. You bite at every crumb you find.
he sounds the exact same live. that's talent
He does! So does Adele and John legend
Adele is AMAZING!!!! Saw her in concert and she is absolutely fantastic!
Or boring
false.
so much voice control, what an amazing live performer
What.

In the UK that butter would still be solid in July =)
Something about this song makes me cry.
Mother of a gay child, always hoping the world will treat her and her wife as equal as anyone else in love.
Bless you. Sending love and light to you and your daughter. Keep her safe and always let her know that she is loved and worthy of love.

This song is genius. His voice is fabulous and the lyrics are bold and great.
