"Her fight and fury is fiery. Oh, but she loves like sleep to the freezing." Is so powerful. To compare someone's love to sleep for the freezing. This genius does. He writes characters that become *real people*, brought to life by the singing. It’s an incredible talent. This is the first song on a Mahogany Sessions playlist that includes other artists, and whoa...what an error in judgement that was, lol. This song is so well-crafted and richly sung, that it kind of inadvertently made the other artists and songs look like the Kindergarten Sessions. This is no dig on the others, it’s just that Cherry Wine and Hozier in general is such a cut above, that it maybe was an error to put anything else in such close quarters for comparison.
nobody should but we live in such a world, it happens all the time. From the girl perspective, i think it happens to most of us sooner or later in life to be sexually harassed, mentally harassed for longer time or physically abused. All you need is one friendship/relationship, psycho boss relationship that somehow escalates into some sick thing when you refuse to comply to the crazy demands. Some people just cannot stand the word 'no'.
Also I just want to give props to hozier for being so inclusive and out spoken. Abusive relationships isn’t always the girl being the victim. Society tends to forget the abuse men go through too and I’m just so in love with the way hozier writes his songs so they can impact every person in their own way so beautiful.
Bernadette Sarms the version on the album is actually live!! if you listen closely you can hear birds chirping and wind blowing, since they recorded it on a roof somewhere.
Bernadette I saw Hozier live in concert and every song sounded just like the studio version! So rare these days for there not to be a slight drop in quality in a concert - he’s so talented!

Christina in every great music in youtube, someone with a good heart out there really cares about putting the lyrics on so everyone can relate..😊👌 thanks Christina..
This is one of the prettiest and most romantic sounding songs I’ve ever heard, yet the lyrics are horrifying. It’s a genius contrast that always gets me emotional. Makes my heart ache to think of ever laying a hand on my partner, and to think of people going through this type of abuse. Such a powerful song.
this song is about how we romanticize the abuse in love. it sounds so pretty in our ears, but when we hear the lyrics, it holds a much deeper meaning. my heart goes out to all those who are dealing with or have dealt with abuse in a relationship.
This song is so unbelievably clever, the tone of his voice and the rhythm of the guitar makes it sound like the most beautiful romantic love song but when you listen to the lyrics its so deep and painful. I just love Hozier he's an incredible artist!!
I used to listen to this song and cry because I was in a horrible physically abusive relationship. This song woke me up. Years later, when I saw Hozier perform live just last year and he played this song it meant so much more to me, because I wouldn’t cry. I’m healed now, and because of this song calming me from then until today, I just want to say thank you.
Wow...I'm so sorry for your abusive past. No one deserves that kind of pain. But so amazing to hear how this song wont let you shed that tear ever again. Happy you are in a better place. Thank you for sharing that. You are beautiful and dont let anyone ever tell you different :)
I want to point out that the Hozier's soft singing followed by the sudden crescendos in his voice really captures the way a discussion sounds. It's also a perfect analogy for a troubled relationship with its peaceful and loving moments intertwined with sudden outbursts of violence and anger. Really great work!
comments gonna be a little late and all but oh well. I recently came out of an abusive relationship with a woman I loved very much. this song came up in my recommended a while ago and being a fan of hozier I listened to it. I really liked it although I couldnt figure out why. however, now looking back realizing the relationship was abusive, I finally realize I love this song because I can relate to it so much. thank you hozier for creating music that makes me feel a bit better about myself, much love.
"the way she tells me i'm hers and she is mine open hand or closed fist would be fine" i wrote an entire story about a toxic and domestically abusive relationship just based on those two lines and my english teacher asked me if i was okay. this song is just a punch to the gut in the form of emotion
Hozier seems to be an emotional sponge, meaning he can absorb and relate anguish and turmoil without experiencing the trauma 1st hand. That allows him to translate to the beautiful musical literature that these underappreciated masterpieces.
How do you know he wasn't abused? He mentions a person with green eyes in his new song and I dont think he was singing this for some abused man I think he was andcis being abused by a someone he's intimate with. If he's notvbeingvabused or never was let's hope John plays no role because he was is the most abusive man I've ever met and known!
One of the truest and most significant songwriters to emerge in a couple of generations, and there are many...he stands out like Dylan did when he began back in 1962...
Much like most abusive relationships that seem normal on the outside and painful within, this is someone's horror wrapped inside a beautiful melody. Hozier is brilliant!
Here's the deal--an artist writes a song. They may draw from their own experience. They may find inspiration elsewhere. It holds meaning to the artist. However, regardless of the original inspiration, various listeners may interpret the lyrics in different ways. The song may be about an abusive relationship, but someone in love may be moved by a particular line that speaks to them. Art is fluid. This song is so beautiful that it leaves me breathless.
A particular line yes I can understand that. But take into account the other parts of the verse and chorus this is about abuse. It is about being in a toxic relationship that you know you shouldn't be in yet for whatever reason you are completely devoted to them. It is beautiful and wonderful in every aspect...
Exactly and how one interprets art depends greatly on their own worldview. I know a few people in a certain lifestyle who listen to this and hear nothing but the purest, most beautiful and loving tribute to an FL dsr.
Is it just me or is this song about domestic violence, with a man being on the receiving end? It's so beautiful that it lulls you into this quiet space, and then you start listening to the lyrics. Society doesn't talk much about men experiencing domestic violence... perhaps we all need to examine our perceptions of this huge issue. Thanks, Hozier... beautiful and thought provoking song.
isaiah zamorano It's about it on both ends to "her blood is red and sweet like cherry wine" it's addictive to him and he doesn't care if she hurts him either, as long as they're together
Hozier's music, lyrics, and voice make me feel. Does that sound weird? Yeah, i think it kinda does. Does anyone else feel the same way? Most music out there makes you want to get up and dance or throw something or pimp walk, his music just makes me sit down and think. I think we all need to do more of that.
shut the fuck up. Its not cool to be weird. It weird to be weird. Conform, step in line. go and work in construction and provide something valuable for society you muppet. Shit- I'm just sitting here? Yea, I'm just sitting here. Profound huh? God, liiiiillllllllllll me. Im going to hell. Ive been having a really hard time I'm sorry. I didn't mena to be mean. My girlfriends name was Kanathalina. EX girlfriend. I keep forgetting. I guess I'm just struggling to let go. Maybe dm me? and we can? talk?
The acoustic intro almost made me cry, but I lost it at "All while she stains, the sheets of some other." This song is ruining my life, to be honest. So relevant. So conflicting. SO TRUE.
I feel like the song is about a man who loves a girl who leads him on but doesn't love him in return. Despite the fact that she mentally abuses him, he's still in love with her and doesn't care. That's just what i think?
My sister passed away May of 2019 after getting into a car accident. Every time she visits me in my dreams, this song is always playing in the background. Not sure why, but playing it brings me peace - I know she’s in a better place.
I think this is one of the best songs about abuse that's ever been written -- it's so temptingly lovely that there's a part of you that just wants to make it a love song or to rewrite it into a happy end, but you can't; not once you realize what it's actually about. (I suppose you could make it about a consensually, very specifically kinky relationship, but. It's not MEANT to be taken that way, and it's hard to make all the words work.) It's so powerful because of that.
“She loves like sleep to the freezing” is a really disturbing line when you think about how humans respond to hypothermia. Once the lethargy kicks in and a freezing person succumbs to sleep, they’re unlikely to survive.
I love how the light squeaking of the strings during the chord changes almost mimics the birdsong in the album version. I will just never get over the perfection of this song, and this performance.
this song is a perfect example of trauma bond, a victim’s response to the abuse they experience. how the victim just excuses/justifies their partner’s abuse for love, no matter how little they get it and no matter the damage.
This album has ruining my whole life..too..best thing I heard since Dream of the Blue Turtles..,Sting...Makes me cry and Im 46..really never been so happy..so powerful..Sorry Wendy..where did it all go wrong..me i suppose..
My headphones up all the way, its beautiful I cant get enough. Fills me with emotion I didnt know was there. I want more and more, age has nothing to do with it, but I'm right there with you.
I completely understand and sympathize! I'll be 49 in 2 weeks and I'm listening to Hozier while I'm "working" - and, also a big fan of Sting even though it's been a while since I've spent time listening to him - a good thing to revisit when I get tired of Hozier - oh wait, that could be years from now :)
I am a big fan of Irish music as it is but this guy is one of the best. His music is so different. So full of emotion and intellect. His voice is as powerful as a storm but in Cherry Wine shows how delicate he can express a song. I have watched his interviews and he is so humble and such a deep thinker. My daughter introduced me to him and this is one artist I am proud my teenagers are listening to
The Mahogany Sessions You guys do an incredible job ...Editing... Venue....ambience...stunning...I have had this song on repeat for most of my evening..I am editing photos of my favourite classic actresses on photoshop and this piece from Hozier is perfect.
Love the way he looks in his glasses. So studious and contemplative. And that tuft of hair that always hangs down the side of his face, giving it some cover, as if he's a bit shy. Adorable! Sad song anyway you look at it, but his talent, singing it so movingly, gives me great joy!
Wow. First heard this song after escaping an abusive relationship that nearly killed me. That was 9 years ago. This song still hits really hard even though I'm finally completely healed. Amazing
Her eyes and words are so icy Oh but she burns Like rum on the fire Hot and fast and angry as she can be I walk my days on a wire It looks ugly, but it's clean Oh momma, don't fuss over me The way she tells me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine Calls of guilty thrown at me All while she stains The sheets of some other Thrown at me so powerfully Just like she throws with the arm of her brother But I want it It's a crime That she's not around most of the time The way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine Blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine Her fight and fury is fiery Oh but she loves Like sleep to the freezing Sweet and right and merciful I'm all but washed In the tide of her breathing And it's worth it, it's divine I have this some of the time The way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine
"oh mama don't fuss over me" that's the real line, just think about it, tough man telling the only female role model in his life that he's fine whilst evil is happening and he doesn't know what to do & she's maybe the only one that could talk sense. incredible song
I didn't think there could be a better version than the studio version and yet... Thanks Hozier, it's been a long time since I've fallen in love with some music like that.
This song hurts so bad, its been almost a year of being away from my abusive ex wife, people laugh and make jokes but I saw my grandfather beat my grandmother and I got my ass kicked by every man that hit my mother, I can't hit a female back epically one I love, so you just take it and hope it gets better but it never does I had to leave because it was affecting my little girl and even tho she's doing a lot better I miss my ex and im fighting depression everyday I know I made the right choice but I miss having someone that makes all the bad days go away gotta keep my head up
Some people call that graduation goggles. The longer you're away from something, the better the memories are because you tend to forget the bad memories and continue to remember the good ones. Best of luck to you and your daughter, you made the right call leaving her.
Sorry for the late reply but we accept the love we think we deserve and let me tell you, you deserve so much more than what your ex gave you. So so much more. This sounds cliche but love yourself, acknowledge your value and worth. You're too worthy to be loved less than what you deserve. Please remember that the right person would never ever try to intentionally hurt you. She's not worth it and she's not the only woman in the world sooo pleasee don't ever come back to her. Missing someone is ok but I hope you see how not right she is for you.
I think every song he performs will sound amazingly and uniquely. he is obviously so talented, and the way he talks is so sweet and cute. not to mention how beautiful his hands are, my favorite music artist of recent years
I had been drawn to this song for months. Play it on my guitar in my daily guitar fix. Yesterday I fucking burst into tears when I found out it was about spousal abuse. I had been identifying with the impressionist musical portrait of that painful life. Unbelievable song. I was an subtlety abused husband for years. Yes,it is subtle and you get used to it as you go on living just for the rare moments when things are good. Can't believe I am putting this pain in writting
My most recent relationship was definitely not abusive but she hurt me a lot, took advantage of my kindness, lied to me multiple times, and even though I don't want to compare my experience to an abusive relationship, this song makes me think of her in the most bittersweet way I can fathom
Theres such a thing as emotionally abusive. They invalidate, gaslight you and manipulate you to doing their bidding, demanding your loyalty and respect while giving you none in return. It is mentally draining and can lead to depression and severe anxiety. Its okay to try to act stoic and "be a man" but don't get it twisted. Abuse comes in all forms
this man is singing his heart out... looking at his eyes is like deepening into the universe of the song... so sorrowful and yet mesmerizing, just like he says in the lyrics. this man is awesome

I mean, what kind of kid writes like that?? This genius does. He writes characters that become *real people*, brought to life by the singing. It’s an incredible talent.
This is the first song on a Mahogany Sessions playlist that includes other artists, and whoa...what an error in judgement that was, lol. This song is so well-crafted and richly sung, that it kind of inadvertently made the other artists and songs look like the Kindergarten Sessions. This is no dig on the others, it’s just that Cherry Wine and Hozier in general is such a cut above, that it maybe was an error to put anything else in such close quarters for comparison.
An amazing breakdown of the video.
@Alina same, girl, same.
Thank you for this!🤍

This song is song is so beautiful yet terrifying. No one should ever be abused or hurt in any way.
Very true. I read your username as Amelia pancakes
nobody should but we live in such a world, it happens all the time. Some people just cannot stand the word 'no'.
just me babahhahahahhahaha
Also I just want to give props to hozier for being so inclusive and out spoken. Abusive relationships isn’t always the girl being the victim. Society tends to forget the abuse men go through too and I’m just so in love with the way hozier writes his songs so they can impact every person in their own way so beautiful.
I wish that could happen. My father is abusive
it sounds like the original studio version. oh hozier. you are simply amazing
Bernadette Sarms the version on the album is actually live!! if you listen closely you can hear birds chirping and wind blowing, since they recorded it on a roof somewhere.
There was never a studio version of this song. He has only ever recorded it live and put it on the album.
Laura of course he lives in the forest. No high tech there. Just his raw talent
Bernadette I saw Hozier live in concert and every song sounded just like the studio version! So rare these days for there not to be a slight drop in quality in a concert - he’s so talented!
I performed this at my talent show 2 years ago
Her eyes and words are so icy
Oh but she burns
Like rum on a fire
Hot and fast and angry
As she can be
I walk my days on a wire
It looks ugly, but it's clean
Oh mamma, don't fuss over me
[Chorus:]
The way she tells me I'm hers and she is mine
Open hand or closed fist would be fine
The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine
Calls of guilty thrown at me
All while she stains
The sheets of some other
Thrown at me so powerfully
Just like she throws with the arm of her brother
But I want it, it's a crime
That she's not around most of the time
[Chorus:]
Way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine
Open hand or closed fist would be fine
The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine
Her fight and fury is fiery
Oh but she loves
Like sleep to the freezing
Sweet and right and merciful
I'm all but washed
In the tide of her breathing
And it's worth it, it's divine
I have this some of the time
[Chorus:]
Way she tells me I'm hers and she is mine
Open hand or closed fist would be fine
The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine
Thanks for the lyrics ^^
Thank you!
Thank you but the second and third chorus are switched.

"like sleep to the freezing" is such a beautiful metaphor

This song is so unbelievably clever, the tone of his voice and the rhythm of the guitar makes it sound like the most beautiful romantic love song but when you listen to the lyrics its so deep and painful. I just love Hozier he's an incredible artist!!
the way he says 'divine' omg
the way he says 'rum on a fire'
the way he says.. basically anything. he could recite the periodic table of elements and I'd be in a puddle.
+basketnoise That would be so great, i would know the whole periodic table if he recited it.

I'd actually learn in my chemistry class if he recited the periodic table.
Its divine the way he says "divine" :)
This comment was a beautiful read. Thanks for sharing. Music is a catalyst for so much self discovery. I'm glad you're in a better place.
Wow...I'm so sorry for your abusive past. No one deserves that kind of pain. But so amazing to hear how this song wont let you shed that tear ever again. Happy you are in a better place. Thank you for sharing that. You are beautiful and dont let anyone ever tell you different :)
"Hi im Hozier" as if his voice isn't the definition of love
I want to point out that the Hozier's soft singing followed by the sudden crescendos in his voice really captures the way a discussion sounds. It's also a perfect analogy for a troubled relationship with its peaceful and loving moments intertwined with sudden outbursts of violence and anger. Really great work!
Well said .
Wonderfully said !
his voice is filled with pain and emotion and my fragile heart cant handle any of it
comments gonna be a little late and all but oh well.

2:32 this is absolute artistry, the way he depicts violence through the roughness of switching between chords with such rigour.

Terrance Hill
Too bad he's mainly faded out of mainstream music. Why do good artist like these get drowned out by trashy musicians?
guy Farting I have a few ideas but, what are your thoughts?
Feels like the public is forgetting what good music is. They need to look to people like Hozier and realize we have such a fantastic artist with us.
Much like most abusive relationships that seem normal on the outside and painful within, this is someone's horror wrapped inside a beautiful melody. Hozier is brilliant!
"It looks ugly, but it's clean."
and "sleep to the freezing"
sheesh. gets me everytime.
Masterpiece
It is beautiful and wonderful in every aspect...
seems to be the dynamo of the artist -- toxic relationships
thanks for giving us "the deal"
This song in particular isn't up for interpretation tbh.
It's hundred percent about an abusive relationship I'm happy someone else caught on to that.
isaiah zamorano It's about it on both ends to "her blood is red and sweet like cherry wine" it's addictive to him and he doesn't care if she hurts him either, as long as they're together
I'm pretty sure he says "the blood is rare", not red. It's rare because she's not around most of the time, which makes the pain even sweeter
I've just gone on what I heard but either one's pretty nice (although I prefer yours haha)
Makes a bit more sense now, cheers for clearing that up for me :)
A rainy afternoon watching the trees on the balcony, a coffee in hand and hozier’s songs are played. Feeling the emotions of love and emptiness.
He has such a simultaneously gentle and powerful voice. True talent.
Exactly
Yees, so true (:
yeah same...I just sit here and think...not being sad neither happy...I don't know...
i second that
shut the fuck up. Maybe dm me? and we can? talk?
The acoustic intro almost made me cry, but I lost it at "All while she stains, the sheets of some other."
This song is ruining my life, to be honest. So relevant. So conflicting. SO TRUE.
Hi, what is your take on the song? Because I have many different things it could be about it ☺️
I believe that the woman is abusing the man (physically and emotionally), but he loves her so much that he doesn't recognize it as abuse.
Lana Volsky that is my exact interpretation. It's daunting and yet Hozier makes is so beautiful.
I agree.
I feel like the song is about a man who loves a girl who leads him on but doesn't love him in return. Despite the fact that she mentally abuses him, he's still in love with her and doesn't care. That's just what i think?
when I first heard his voice something inside me came alive. It's amazing how music can affect us from inside to out
The Kareful Koala SAME

@@420hartless5150 Nice thing to say to someone who's going through grief, really nice /irony
It really hits hard ❤
This dude is effortless. Rare talent.
this is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.
Kinsey Stapleton This is what you call music 👌
Hozier and James Bay are changing my life.
James is cool in his own way. But please, he doesn't compare in 10th with the lyrics and depth of the songs.
The way this song sounds so cheerful yet is actually so heartbreaking gets me every time I listen
I love how even though he has probably sang this song a million times he still gets a little smile while he plays.
He's one of the few artists who actually sound exactly the studio version. God bless this man.
this song is a perfect example of trauma bond, a victim’s response to the abuse they experience. how the victim just excuses/justifies their partner’s abuse for love, no matter how little they get it and no matter the damage.
A true poetic genius, each line of lyric is pretty deep and some get super deep, much respect to this man and beautiful song

The amount of dynamic control this guy has is honestly scary
I am a big fan of Irish music as it is but this guy is one of the best. His music is so different. So full of emotion and intellect. His voice is as powerful as a storm but in Cherry Wine shows how delicate he can express a song. I have watched his interviews and he is so humble and such a deep thinker. I didn't think there could be a better version than the studio version and yet... Thanks Hozier, it's been a long time since I've fallen in love with some music like that.
This song hurts so bad, its been almost a year of being away from my abusive ex wife, people laugh and make jokes but I saw my grandfather beat my grandmother and I got my ass kicked by every man that hit my mother, I can't hit a female back epically one I love, so you just take it and hope it gets better but it never does I had to leave because it was affecting my little girl and even tho she's doing a lot better I miss my ex and im fighting depression everyday I know I made the right choice but I miss having someone that makes all the bad days go away gotta keep my head up
I can’t ever imagine what you went and are going through... I pray and hope you have better days ahead...
Some people call that graduation goggles. The longer you're away from something, the better the memories are because you tend to forget the bad memories and continue to remember the good ones.
Best of luck to you and your daughter, you made the right call leaving her.
Keep going man
im so glad to hear you and your daughter got away from that, i know it's tough but im glad you can find solace in this song. much love

Just because others may have had it worse doesn’t invalidate your feelings. Feel what you need to feel. You are valid.
That sounds like emotional abuse. Your experience is totally valid, no need to compare it to others. I hope you're holding up ok and staying safe
