Anchor Winch Rebuild - Part 9 - Plaster Block Mold Bronze Casting Failures

  • It's unfortunate that we give the word Failure such a negative context. Because if you are not failing at something you are either doing nothing or you are only copying the steps that someone else created. Willingness to fail is key to creativity and innovation and successful life. LIVE Celebrate Life. All of it.
And thanks to Philip Carlsson of Sweden for the awesome new opening clip.

If you are nothing else, you are tenacious! But of course, you are more than that. I'm continually impressed with what you are doing and that you are doing it in your front yard. Even with or maybe because of your "failures", your work is inspirational.

The road to success is lined with Failure! Don't know if I stole that but you my friend are persistent! And I thinks that's why you have the following that you have. So many don't try because of their past failures. Watching you is an inspiration to NEVER quit!

Very well put. If failure isn't in a persons vocabulary, mindset or life in some form, there on the wrong planet. Sometimes all the work with the castings looks lost but there's that learning process, onward and upward. I learned again, and I'm an old bugger !!

Unlike a lot of channels, Doug shows us the lessons he's learned along the way, no matter the results, or lack of... I know he'll get there eventually, and everyone watching will be able to understand why he's doing it and not just how.. Keep up the good videos Doug and Betsy !

My kids and I sat around the laptop cheering the successes and cussing like a half-drunk sailor when that freaking mold broke again. (well, I did the cussin'. Mamma was too close for the kids to spout off). If empathy were gold and sympathy silver, then you'd be rich man for sure. If it matters, you've got young and old kindred spirits sending you all the best vibes we can. We learned a ton just watching this. No failures noted here. Wish we could help out monetarily and not just in spirit. Fair winds and following seas......

You guys got church bells for for balls... and the perseverance in the face of what looks like an extremely steep learning curve is inspiring. I learn something new with every edition to your channel.
Thank you for documenting and sharing what you do there.

watching you guys, it is like watching an inventor(s) starting from the beginning, please note, I say that kindly... most folks will do all that they can to hind the whole learning process, as to leave the images that they had no issues..... but you guys, showing all the great moments and to include the rough moments, is priceless. besides, how many other folks do you know that are pulling off a project of this magnitude... I commend you folks for rocking and rolling, I really enjoy watching all that you guys/gals are doing... I consider folks of a bazillion years ago and they didn't have a hardware store down the road.... for sure let a person appreciate the amazing fete of engineering that had, heck, it is hard today to build things.. Great job folks

It was left out on a end table at a family friends house and I had read the first 40 pages before I left (think I was actually there for to sit shiva but I was young and didnt know the person, the book was way more entertaining). Also the movie was shit like a 2/10

This is my favourite one yet. Today, after watching this, I managed to get an algae to live inside a paramecium; I've been trying for about 5 months to get it to work. All that failure does is make the eventual success all the more sweet.

Nice how you include the failures. We all learn most from those. Too often RUclips video editors decide to cut out anything negative and act like they got everything right on the first try. Then others come along and say hey that's easy! Only to be disappointed when they have to find out the hard way and burn through investment funds.

yea...putting the mold into a steel drum should fix the leaks. FWIW....I've done a little reading on Bronze castings and after learning how hard they are...I then had a new appreciation for every bronze monument I saw.
After watching this last video...I have even more appreciation for bronze castings. There's just so much to go wrong. It is truly an art.
Also...Makes me really appreciate a bronze cannon. Wow...Just think about any defects under pressure of firing a cannon.
    FWIW...Great video...as usual.

You guys have my respect for sure. first Green Sand then lost wax and foam. When artist do lost wax (think bronze sculptures) they dip in a slurry from very fine to progressively more coarse. This helps the finish. Its funny watching your videos because I suggest things in my head and a minute later your doing it. I made brass medallions once and we had to heat the molds in a kiln for several days and pour while the mold was still hot. Not sure if it is feasible for you since our molds were considerably smaller. Can't wait to see the result.
