  • We all have those movies. You know the ones.. The movie that seemingly everyone else has seen but you haven't? For me, The Goonies is that movie. Toni and I both grew up in the 80's so by all accounts, we should have seen this. Being a teenager when this came out, I always thought is was aimed at younger kids so I never checked it out. Tonight, we fix that and finally check it out!

    Gremlins is 100% a Christmas movie. It's Hollywood's public service announcement about why you don't buy your kids pets for Christmas. They don't take proper care of them, and then they turn into a bunch of little monsters.

    "Don't you realize? The next time you see sky, it'll be over another town. The next time you take a test, it'll be in some other school. Our parents, they want the best of stuff for us. But right now, they got to do what's right for them. Because it's their time. Their time! Up there! Down here, it's our time. It's our time down here. That's all over the second we ride up Troy's bucket."
    Fun Fact: Film debut of Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, and Kerri Green.
    Novelization Fact: The novelization confirms that Chunk's (Jeff Cohen) parents actually do "adopt" Sloth (John Matuszak), going so far as to throw him a Bar Mitzvah.
    Heartbreaking Fact: According to Sean Astin, he was allowed to keep the treasure map used in the film. Several years later his mother Patty Duke (an actress herself) discovered it, thought it was just a crinkled piece of paper, and threw it in the bin.
    Historical Fact: The Fratellis are loosely based off Ma Barker and the Barker-Karpis gang during the "public enemy era" of America crime history. While Ma Barker's leadership is in dispute, she was definitely an accomplice to the gang's many robberies and murders. Ma Barker and the gang met their end in a house off Lake Weir in Florida. You should read more about them.
    The Inferno Fact: One Eyed Willie's ship was 105 feet long and took 2-1/2 months to construct. It was modeled after Errol Flynn's ship in The Sea Hawk (1940). The sails required more than 7,000 sq. ft. of material, the largest measured 30 ft. by 60 ft. The cast was not allowed to see the pirate ship before the scene was shot, as director Richard Donner wanted to catch their genuine reactions at the size and scope of it. When they did see it, Josh Brolin was so surprised that he exclaimed "Holy shit!" without thinking. The scene had to be re-shot. When filming ended, some of the ship's rigging was recycled for the "Pirates Of The Caribbean" ship at Disneyland, which was being renovated at the time.

    • @matthewprince9705
      @matthewprince9705 Месяц назад +1

      This ship was fantastic and the story was that it was meant to be part of a much larger "third act" with cannon fire and explosions. The producers wanted a big sequence to end the movie with "shudder" the Octopus, but the budget was not there and I don't think Warner Bros wanted to spend any more! I also think they shot a lot more footage than was seen. It's a shame all they could do is run around the ship. Such a waste.

    This was filmed in Astoria, Oregon the house at the beginning is a pretty popular tourist attraction despite only being in the first part of the film. Previous owners didn’t allow visitors but the current owners now allow as long as they are respectful of the property.
    The historic jail at the beginning is now the Oregon Film museum, that showcases props and other information from various films that were shot in Oregon. I believe they even have the Jeep that the Fratellis were driving parked out front.

    This was my absolute favorite movie as a kid growing up. I would watch it literally: EVERY. SINGLE. DAY on VHS. Sometimes more than once. It went on for years lol. My family would come in and turn off the audio and I would just go on picking up quoting the movie, they would turn the audio back on and I was always exactly synched lol. I could quote every single line of this movie from start to finish. I was 9 lol.
    It holds a dear and special place in my heart to this day 30odd years later, there's just something magic about its goofiness, the sense of wonder, adventure, the cameraderie, the fighting against greedy baddies , the mystery, and freaking pirates! This movie is perfect .
    You are right David, they don't make movies like this anymore.
    As for other 80s movies, me and my brother would spend the afternoons watching Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Beverly Hills Cop, Terminator and a whole bunch of Stallone's action movies lol. Beverly Hills Cop it's actually a surprisingly good movie to this day, if you havent' seen it, a recommendation right there ;)
    Also Tony, don't be scared about Gremlins, it's actually funnier than scarier, it's good silly times.

    Richard Donner directed the Original Christopher Reeve Superman 1 and 2, The Omen, The Toy, Scrooged, and all Lethal Weapons movies. He is one of the most underrated directors ever. Even his final movie 16 blocks with Bruce Willis and Mos Def was pretty good. He was born in 1930 & passed in 2021 at 91 years old. He doesn't get enough credit for what he accomplished.

    After seeing this film for the first time as a kid, I planned to climb into my attic to see if there was a treasure map up there. Of course, I didn't in the end because I was an arachnophobe and thus too scared of what spiders might be up there. There was likely no treasure map up there but it's a great example of how this movie stimulated a child's imagination. From the writer of Gremlins by the way, Richard Donner also directed Superman: The Movie (1978) hence both references.

      I pretty sure some of it is their first reactions, but they have said that they had to do another take to edit together, because the first time the kids saw the ship, they dropped several f-bombs just from sheer surprise. This still had to get a PG rating, so they couldn’t use all of that. I almost dropped some of those myself, which would have been bad, being a rather foul mouthed kid with rather straight laced parents who were sitting next to me. 😄

      @0okamino Месяц назад

      At that time, Oregon had certain "treasure trove" statutes in effect. If I'm understanding them (and any amendments that would apply in mid-1980s) correctly, state authorities would have the ultimate rights of possession for any artifacts/treasure of historical significance (especially if found on public land), but would be obligated to fully compensate the finder for the value of the treasure. I'm not sure how it applies, though, if part of the treasure floats away from where it was found, like in this movie.
      As for anything like an abandoned car, or treasure that isn't of historical value, I don't know.

    This is what I understand about treasure finding law (though not an expert so consult a lawyer if you plan to go hunt treasure): If you find a wrecked ship/buried treasure with no legitimate owners then you get ownwership of goods (or their value when sold to a museum, as some things of historical or cultural significance may have a government force you to give it up) but there is a significant federal tax to the country whose waters/land it was in plus then you pay income tax to your country. If in international waters, then I think you only pay income tax to your country. Of course all that's only if the find is old enough there are no legitimate legal claims to the ship/treasure or its contents still on the books. If it's a relatively recent lost ship/hidden treasure (less than 200 years old let's say) there could actually be descendants of the owners &/or an insurance company that has main rights (since they would've paid out a claim on it after a certain amount of time it's been lost). Still you would get a nice "finder's fee", which of course again you have to pay income tax on.

    Salvage rights.
    If you find an abandoned sea vessel or wreck you do get the rights to anything and everything of value.
    Unless Spain claims it.
    That's an old joke... originating from numerous times Spain has tried to take the valuables that people who search for and recover artifacts from ship wrecks have found.

    Funny enough this is loosely based off of an Oregon coast myth/legend of a sunken Spanish galleon off of Manzanita beach. They know it is out there somewhere as bits of royal-stamped beeswax and other parts have washed up after storms over the years. And the local indigenous tribes tell tales of a ship stranding there, and the survivors marching inland in a hope to get to Spanish settlements

    I had somehow never seen this before. You can definitely feel the Spielberg influence. As for other 80s movies, Stand By Me is a great one but you've seen it. Stephen King writes kids so well and their friendships seem so real in that one. Good to see you enjoying a reaction. I think 40 minutes is a decent length for the edit. Maybe try Dead Poets Society? That just sneaks into the 80s at 1989. We need more Robin Williams in our lives.

    Also, did you just ask if a handful of precious gems was enough to save a house in 1985? LMAO Those gems were worth MILLIONS even in 1985. Those were 5 carat+ stones. The house they lived in was worth about 100k back then. Literally they could have saved every single one of their homes, and had millions left over.

    The past 30 years, or so there were court cases dealing with sunken treasures found. The end result was that whatever country owned the loot, when it was lost, can claim it. That happened because of a salvager claiming gold coins off the coast of Florida. The Spanish government became involved as it was 'originally' their gold, although it was several hundred years left under the sea. The international courts ruled it was Spanish owned and a new law was enacted.
