Dr Lee was killing Devon's ego from the inside out . Instantly chiding him for thinking he bested Sean on the particular line .thus cementing a most pivotal truth at the end .
There some truth in that though .in a pack of wolves. The leader was once a subordinate.or a beta .however following sound at leadership at the heels of another alpha is a stepping stone of getting coached and tetulaged into being at the top eventually however leadership always begins with following .
For everyone that doesn't get what happened its devin not following lead of the band. He caught on to the simple cadence and when it was his time he played it but if you pay attention Devin was aggressive and ultimately paces faster than Shawn. While Devin showing he could out play shawn, that was a clear takeaway that Devin hadn't yet brought into the concept of "one band one sound." As you can see when Dr Lee called him out on it, even tho it was performing the same cadence. It wasn't about his coordination and if he could walk and do it . But now that he to his successor had to become a follower thus humbling himself. A simple step in a direction forced him to submit to a lead. This is why Dr Lee told him directly "you have to learn to follow before you can lead Mr Miles."
I never understood this scene until I read this response. In my mind I was thinking wtf was he supposed to do, lose on purpose? But now I realize he was in fact out pacing Shawn to prove he was better, instead of trying to match him to achieve the “one band one sound” concept. Thanks for this explanation!
Devin was focused on being one thing, the best drummer " The Man" . Dr. Lee, in order to achieve his position had to be the best at EVERYTHING.. Not to mention the responsibilities of being delegator, a mediator, all the curve balls his position commands, in terms of academics etc etc.. Dealing with alumni .. Dr. Lee showed Devon if you really think you are the best, answer that question when you have to ix a couple of sections, deal with other students personal issues etc, family issues meanwhile having the focus to knock out that drum solo 100% without hesitation..... This of all the mental distractions is why he made Devon WALK with HIM during their face off.. if you dont know how to play its cool. once you learn how to play its the most ridiculous movie ever. because you realise the rhythms and all the rudiments they play are the most simplest of them all. and at times they are't even playing so yeah its possible to not like the movie. i mean i used to love it before i started drumming for my school's drumline.
Abraham Perez-Gordillo As a former liner, I'd say they're actually not nearly as bad as you're trying to make them out to be. I still love this movie because at the end of the day, the cadences, however slick, tight, or complex/simple, mean nothing to the overall message - what separates a "percussionist" from a "concussion-ist". Ego has no place on the line, or in the big leagues.
don't see how he looked like a "jackass". he still schooled one of the drum masters of that staff in front of people. that was the most goonish thing i've seen.
he was smirking like an ass thinking he was the best. and when dr lee came up he proved that miles still had a lot to learn. as lee and SuperImmunologist said, "you have to learn to follow before you can lead"
It's not about "schooling" anyone. One band, one sound. Devon's ego won't allow him to work with his team. It doesn't matter how good a drummer he is (or thinks he is) - if he can't work with them, then he's completely useless. Fact of life. If he has no dedication, discipline, or humility to his craft, he can't proceed...on the line, or even in his own life. When Sean tells him to go and "be the man, without the line", Devon doesn't know what to do. Sean and Lee are trying to teach him how to become a better and stronger PERSON. Showing people up has nothing to do with it.
such a great movie!! having grown up playing snare drum in a drum corps, (DCI-Garfield Cadets, now called, The Cadets '79-'84), this movie reminded me of so many good memories and the important life learning lessons that helped prepare me for life out of high school...this movie does a great job teaching that teamwork, discipline, and attitude are vital to reaching goals...the drum battles in this movie are insanely awesome too! 💯💥✌🥁🎵🎶
It doesn´t matter how good you say you are, it doesn´t matter how easy or not the music is in this movie, NEWSFLASH they`re actors, they act, not musicians. The moral of the story is that in a group, of anykind, band, work, school, anything, you have to be able to sacrifice the needs of the individual for the needs and common good of the group.
+Abel Miranda while your point about the moral may be (and is) valid, your little newsflash that these are actors and not actual musicians, a fact that I doubt a single person here was unaware of, just make you look like a pretentious jackass
+FerretJohn The fact that I don't even remember why I said such further supports whether or not I should question you're reasoning as to why you responded...because honestly i could care less lol
There wasn't anyone better, Sean even said it towards the end. But one man doesn't make a band and that's the point Dr. LEE wanted to illustrate to Devon.
i'm 15 and this movie was an inspiration for every percussionist i know thats my age and we reenact the "dont look down" scene all the time. i wonder if anyone else does that
This is my kind of movie! Drumline isn't just about the "ohhh hit sticks on a hard surface hehe"! It's about the discipline, the dedication, determination, teamwork, and shows that marching is NOT EASY.
GREAT MOVIE.......:) MY SISTER BAND IN 2004, EASTERN WAYNE HS, GOLDSBORO NC, WON STATE CHAMPIONS...THEY PLAYED THIS DRUMLINE THEME AT HOMECOMING...THE WHOLE CROWD WENT CRAZY.... :) AWESOME
@@keithlee4963 dude it’s an analogy, and he was right you can’t look down. Not for your dot or at your drum because when your wearing a shack or something similar it’s clear as day that you suck.
No, Devon picked it up with the force. Also just want to ask, why would he even use a stick back during practice if you only get one chance? If you drop your stick(s) it's over, pick it up. Last thing, I was bothered by this movie's success because I was in my high school marching band at the time. Ever since the movie, more emphases and attention was placed on the drum solos. It may take skill to learn to pump your arms with style but it takes the same amount of effort, if not more to control your breathing (I was in the brass section btw).
even though this band is a show band, it still revolves around the same theme that every school faces. we all get criticized by our students, we all get told we need "new" songs, and finally we are asked why we arent as good as another school's band. Instead of focusing on just stand tunes and entertainment, this movie portrays just how important the marching show is. Dr. Lee said so himself that he looks forward to educate before getting to entertain. show bands are ok, but i prefer DCI style.
You’re missing the whole point bruh. You are young so Dr. Lee’s methods of coaching Devin might seem antagonist or mean spirited but it’s obvious he recognized a great talent. He was trying to make Devin fail to humble him and check his cocky and near primal Donna behavior. Once Devin humbled himself, he became the SuperStar of the drumline.
It was the smile after that was the problem... dr Lee was addressing an attitude of showing up the section leaders... while you may not need them there is 40 other people who do need them to get betterand you making them lose respect
Brandon Williams He did get kicked out. Even if he performed at the end, he didn’t finish the year. Sometimes being an individual is a detriment. One band one sound after all.
For all you non-drumliners, that's really easy to play and I'm surprised those two would mess up when they did, in college. I can do that in high school.
Man, they run that drum line like a boot camp. The push ups, the running, the drills. Just like going into the Marine Corps. Only difference is they're on a college campus playing music instead of heading out to some village to kill enemy combatants.
I love the way this character teaches us That one must learn That in the end we all must learn to follow In order to be a successful leader This character teaches us that we are one Yessssssssssssss Together we rise New feel I likeeeee
I still dont get Dr Lee, sean wanted devon miles to play as fast and accurately as he could widdout looking down, and dats exactly what he did...what in the heck was Dr Lee pissed off about?
He wasn't pissed, he was doing his job. Devon had to learn (along with reading music) that leadership had to be earned and to blend his talent with the rest of the band instead of individually........
@@davydmx And what does that have to do with the challenge specifically? Should he have failed on purpose? Just because he had a smug look doesn't mean much of anything. That's his persona throughout the damn film, even during the final battle.
Joshua Jardel Allotey it’s because Dr. Lee could sense Devons arrogance from beating Sean. It wasn’t so much that he beat him, but the way Devon beat Sean. It was that arrogance dr. Lee had a drive out of Devon. But what Dr. Lee fail to recognize was the arrogance within his own top student, Sean.
Im guessing most of you people havent been in drumline, or know what it takes to have such strength, ability, discipline, and focus to be on a line. Especially refering to those that are new to the program.
man watching this now makes me miss being in band. played percussion. band camp was fun, honestly, getting up early was usually the best part of the day to be out because it started getting hot. 3 days of my first week of band camp it was 98-100 degrees out, honestly wanted to give in but never did, the pay off is always worth it
People seem to forget that both Sean and Devon are polar opposites of one another. Devon's a cocky little shit, I don't think people quite get that. Sean too had an attitude problem but of a different sort. Both Devon and Sean thought that they were the best. In Devon's case, it's because he was sought after by Doctor Lee and eventually become a P1 which was unheard of for a freshman. Devon figured that everyone would bow to his superior skill within the band; however, it's like Sean pointed out later on: "When you're out there, they don't hear YOU. They hear the BAND." Through this, and Sean's own development, Devon becomes less cocky and learns how to be part of the team. In fact, you see it during the finals of the contest as Morris Brown's drummer starts tapping on Devon's drum and Devon barely reacts (clinching his sticks aside) compared to earlier when Devon provoked a fight on the football field when he started tapping on someone else's drum. Sean's problem came from the fact that his ego was inflated due to his position within the group as a section leader. Sean believed that he was the best of the best and then here comes some little freshman who has a consistent attitude problem and is admittedly very talented. But Sean's problem comes from his authority as a section leader. Given that becoming a section leader takes a lot of dedication and work, it's easy to see how Sean could forget that he was once where the freshmen were. In fact, Doctor Lee even called out Sean during a private conversation where he asserted that Sean felt intimidated by Devon's abilities as a drummer instead of trying to help Devon where he needed it. Sean eventually learns to become more relaxed in his approach and actually mentors Devon and shows Devon the value of learning how to read music.
All of this is very well said. In this particular scene, Devon felt like he proved something after beating Sean in the drum challenge, which Dr Lee noticed. Dr Lee exposed Devon's lack of technical skills, in order to humble him. Sean, as section leader, likely has all of necessary technical skills as well
Really? Name one. I'm almost willing to bet that every "great" musician has been through more hardship than you'll ever know. For them the instrument was the escape from the hardship, the release of the pain. Which is why they spent so much time with it in their hands. They learned they had to follow to minimize the hardship and get to the music. So who's the great one that didn't hide within music?
Everybody says this movies wack and this and that but this movie is really great. The music alone. Yes I fast forward through the love interest parts cause that was a very weak component to the movie, but the fights between him and Shawn, the troubles of the Doc, the situations with his roommates etc, that was really the meat of the movie. The lessons through music, and the band... if you can taste it you get it.

The guy that play Dr.Lee is a great actor. Idk why people don’t notice.
Yeah, he really is.
This was one of the best movies Nick Cannon did, coming from the hood to Atlanta Ga historic HBCU to play drums was powerful
Why hasn’t Orlando Brown gotten bigger roles?? Nick Cannons career took off while Orlando did 7up commercials. Underrated actor.
I met him when he visited Korea, he is a cool guy.
Orlando Jones.
Orlando Brown is totally on some other shit.
And I do mean other shit.
Hahahaha
But yes, orlando jones is truly underrated
Orlando Jones did 7UP commercial before Drumline
Facts!
It really is a shame. I’m such a big fan of his, and especially at this time when things were really happening for him. I can’t imagine how much he got paid by 7up tho. I know he’s still working solid gigs, but I bet it was enough that he didn’t need to work after
2nd drumline movie was nothing like this. Words of wisdom in this movie taught us all something 💯
This came out when I was 12. I watched this DVD every night for months on my PlayStation 2... back when gaming was simple pop in a disc a play ...Boom!
God I miss those days 😊. Such nostalgia. I still have my PS2 as well.
How could you not like this movie?
if you dont know how to play its cool. once you learn how to play its the most ridiculous movie ever. because you realise the rhythms and all the rudiments they play are the most simplest of them all. and at times they are't even playing so yeah its possible to not like the movie. i mean i used to love it before i started drumming for my school's drumline.
Being a real drummer, in a real drumline
Because it’s terrible
I love this film
That bass though when Devon & Sean looked at each other before their challenge 😂
😆😅
I thought I was the only one who caught that 😆 🤣 😂 😹 me and my sis use to laugh at that part😅
don't see how he looked like a "jackass". he still schooled one of the drum masters of that staff in front of people. that was the most goonish thing i've seen.
Right
You have to learn to follow before you can lead as did sean.
he was smirking like an ass thinking he was the best. and when dr lee came up he proved that miles still had a lot to learn. as lee and SuperImmunologist said, "you have to learn to follow before you can lead"
I agree. What was he supposed to do? Not try his best in defeating the drummaster that challenged him?
It's not about "schooling" anyone. One band, one sound. Devon's ego won't allow him to work with his team. It doesn't matter how good a drummer he is (or thinks he is) - if he can't work with them, then he's completely useless. Fact of life. If he has no dedication, discipline, or humility to his craft, he can't proceed...on the line, or even in his own life. When Sean tells him to go and "be the man, without the line", Devon doesn't know what to do. Sean and Lee are trying to teach him how to become a better and stronger PERSON. Showing people up has nothing to do with it.
devin had a ego wen Dr. Lee kicked him off the lineup he humbled himself
Yes. We all need to learn that. You have to learn to follow. Before you can lead. This was great. Thanks for sharing. God bless.

such a great movie!! having grown up playing snare drum in a drum corps, (DCI-Garfield Cadets, now called, The Cadets '79-'84), this movie reminded me of so many good memories and the important life learning lessons that helped prepare me for life out of high school...this movie does a great job teaching that teamwork, discipline, and attitude are vital to reaching goals...the drum battles in this movie are insanely awesome too! 💯💥✌🥁🎵🎶
This film came out when I was in a cadet corps of drums .
And it stuck with me from the start of my journey through to the end.
Our high school band had a saying, "If you're on time, you're late."
I love that!
I think all high school bands had that saying

We had one too.. "too be on time is to be late, and to be early is to be on time"
This is one of my favorite movies growing up (one band one sound )
+Abel Miranda So you care then?
Man this movie a classic
How did he make Sean look bad!? Sean challenge him! Sean couldn't beat the rookie!!! Lol Sean made himself look bad!
Jason Renfro Lee was teaching him because Devon was cocky, cockiness always leads to failure
How does having confidence makes you a failure confidence means you could do anything that you put ya mind into
@@sqcp7379 difference between cocky and confidence. Dr Lee had to show him. No matter how good you think you are theres always someone better
There wasn't anyone better, Sean even said it towards the end. But one man doesn't make a band and that's the point Dr. LEE wanted to illustrate to Devon.
@@Kruppt808 uh did you not see Dr Lee school his ass in this very clip?

It takes motivation for a marching band to become stronger
As a guy I wouldn’t want to be looking at homeboy while thinking about ‘making love and handling my business’ 😂😂3:22
This is my kind of movie! Drumline isn't just about the "ohhh hit sticks on a hard surface hehe"! It's about the discipline, the dedication, determination, teamwork, and shows that marching is NOT EASY.
GREAT MOVIE.......:)

he brings an extra stick
Drummers have multiple sticks just in case that happens.
You would be good at CinemaSins
But there is no stick bag on his drum.
When I made the dance team in the band when I was in high school in 2003 I watched this movie every day lol i was too hyped!!
I wish they would have allowed me to write PART 2 to this. It would have been lit!!
What would you have written for the sequel?
FU. You can't even write a small thesis statement.
It is a flat out joke that 181 people didn't like this movie 🎥 what a masterpiece
Real T.V. 199 people.
Hey it's Marcus from Smart Guy!!!
Good morning...good morning to music. I love that motivation
even though this band is a show band, it still revolves around the same theme that every school faces. we all get criticized by our students, we all get told we need "new" songs, and finally we are asked why we arent as good as another school's band. Instead of focusing on just stand tunes and entertainment, this movie portrays just how important the marching show is. Dr. Lee said so himself that he looks forward to educate before getting to entertain. show bands are ok, but i prefer DCI style.
What if devon beat the 2nd challenge lol
Hahahaha yo I was just thinking that. What would they say then?
It's Devin not Devon
TheWorlds Greatest They would've jumped him. 😂😂😂
Copper Brass R/WHOOOOOSH
Drumline is very amazing in the marching band
I watched this movie everyday after middle school 🔥🔥🔥
Was he supposed to drop his sticks on purpose in order for him not to look like a jackass?
Yes lmao
It was the smile after that was the problem... dr Lee was addressing an attitude of showing up the section leaders... while you may not need them there is 40 other people who do need them to get betterand you making them lose respect

Who came here after watching the basketball video dr Lee have on instagram 👀??
same😂💀😭
I still dont get Dr Lee, sean wanted devon miles to play as fast and accurately as he could widdout looking down, and dats exactly what he did...what in the heck was Dr Lee pissed off about?
Jordan Glasper yeah Sean was also cocky
Jordan Glasper facts. you speaketh the truth.

ONE BAND, ONE SOUND
When one of us is late, WE'RE ALL LATE!
When one of us looks or sounds bad, WE ALL LOOK AND SOUND BAD!
My friend is band teacher and teaches this stuff. If you're not about teamwork then he doesn't want you no matter how good you are.
Im guessing most of you people havent been in drumline, or know what it takes to have such strength, ability, discipline, and focus to be on a line. Especially refering to those that are new to the program.
You people? What people?
man watching this now makes me miss being in band. played percussion. band camp was fun, honestly, getting up early was usually the best part of the day to be out because it started getting hot.
Sean, as section leader, likely has all of necessary technical skills as well
“Now I want 10 laps from all those who are not their roommates mama” classic 😂😂
The greatest musicians never followed nobody to become leaders.
Really?
As a drumcore brat, I really loved this movie
Coltrane, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, and Ew&F... mmmm
" You know how it is when you hit that spot right...don't You girl? " was smooth😏
Sweet jesus, Dr. Lee's traditional grip technique is awful. Look at that cocked wrist! That's a recipe for pain.
He didn't fuck with him then walked away, he taught him a valuable lesson to help him reach a new level.
Thats a leader.
Minutes 3:09 always remember this, playing the drums is like making love.... Who think is this true.?
I remember being excited for this movie bring on drumline in HS and then cringing so hard when it came out
He really tried to make it like military basic training.
