Hey Phly! Just wanted to point out that AFAIK, the M134 Minigun has a maximum fire rate of 6,000 rpm before it starts to get overheating issues, but it can go higher. And yes, putting that through a single barrel would melt it very quickly, but multiple barrels and good airflow means that you'll run out of ammo long before you overheat. Love your videos! Not quite. The 6000 rpm are the maximum fire rate the M134 could do WITHOUT overheating. That's why it is the maximum setting. Overheating the M134 is practically not an issue (which was one of the design characteristics as its predecessor had this problem in Vietnam).
Yeah, at 6000 rpm it is 1000 rounds per gun. That will eventually melt the barrel, eventually. But you will probably run out of ammo by that time.
@@brandonclark435 facts, add to this the cooling effect of continues airflow at several hundred knots, and the gun will run dry LONG before it gets too hot to function.

The A-1H has 1500 rounds per Minigun, thats 250 rounds per barrel, each barrel shoots at 1000rpm, so thats like an M240 firing a 250 round belt at the highest firerate setting, I think it would be toasty by the end of that but still operational
The minigun already has great continous fire rates due to the multiple barrels, and maybe because you're flying at 400km/h you're cooling them down even more so it could work.
1500 rounds per gun isn't that much. afaik it has 6 barrels right so 250 rounds per barrel and it gets cooled by strong airflow also i heard that a well maintained m60 can fire 250 rounds sustained fire until it starts jamming.

This is correct. It's own spinning acts as a great heat dissipation method, add to that several hundred knots of airspeed, and it will run out of ammo before it suffers a heat malfunction. You're more likely to see a failure to feed malfunction LONG before you see the typical heat-related malfunctions like failure to extract.
My M240H as a door gunner could empty a 400 round can in a continues burst. By the time I had cleared the gun, swapped the can, and reloaded, the barrel would be good to go again with all of the air flow, especially in the winter at Fort Drum, 40 seconds later and the barrel was basically a popsicle again.

The early ones I highly doubt they could fire more than 100rounds before the gas regulator retaining clip vibrates itself loose and the weapon disassembles itself on the next round...

Well, I can assure you, I never saw a minigun melt. The 8 barrels rotates so fast while putting out so many lead that its own rotation cools it down to a safe temperature, so no weapon meltdown, nor enough heat to heat treating could be done (my 4 years in middle school finnally pays of😊)
The sustained fire of 1500 rounds [per gun] at upwards of 6k RPM would most definitely generate a lot of heat, but depending on how the pods are constructed, it should also have the airflow to dissipate a good chunk of it to the slipstream around the aircraft. That said, at 6k RPM, each additional barrel is also dividing that fire rate per barrel. With 6 barrels, each is only firing at 1k RPM and only 250 shots before empty, for instance. That's about a bit more than a long belt for a comparable LMG of the same caliber, plus slipstream...
Should be fine. Crews probably have to check for wear each flight.

Well Phly, depending on the variant of the gun pod you've got slung the rate of fire is between 2000rpm and 6000rpm which equates to Max single barrel rate of fire of 1000rpm. I'm pretty sure that the barrels on the M134 have a fairly heavy profile when compared to other 7.62 NATO firearms they will take longer to overheat. Though with only 250 round per barrel before you've run out of ammo for the pod and the cooling effect of the slipstream I don't think you have to worry about the barrels overheating. Worry more about the electric motor spinning the thing.

1500 rounds/6 barrels= 250 rounds per barrel fired, which even squad machine guns can handle easily (but not recommended)
Take into account that these are being actively cooled by the airstream, mitigating A LOT of heat buildup.

If only they gave us the 20mm Vulcan gunpods (same ones on the phantom) for the A-1H. Skyraider my beloved. Glad to finally have a proper version of you after 5 years! Flares were for Iglas. It can carry 8000 Lbs of payload fully loaded.
Fingers crossed we get the final Skyraider the A-1J and it gets the Vulcan gunpods as well as everything the H has. I can die happy now though knowing I own my fav prop aircraft of all time in game.
Honestly "historically accurate" loadouts are stupid, if the weapon is time appropriate for the aircraft and it is capable of carrying, operating, and firing (or dropping) the ordnance it should get it as long as the aircraft can handle the weight.
Needing a picture of the aircraft actually holding the armament in order for it to get it is stupid.
