she was always a stunner. I was born too late and missed out on the 1970s (the greatest decade) but have always thought she was beautiful. And so damn talented.
Great choices by Cloris Leachman. So easy to make the scene simply lustful but she portrays the "want" borne out of being affection deprived for so long. The light and life return to her after the kiss. wonderful!
When I was a teenager I wanted that kiss so badly. Older women have no equal. If I had my time again I wouldn't look at a woman that wasn't at least twice my age.
I saw this movie and The Graduate for my first time in the summer of 2005. Really did something to me. The whole thing with youth vs experience, lust becomes despair, and greener grass syndrome. Then about a month later I pretty much did the exact same thing seen here. You're right, there is something to be said about an older woman and a taboo relationship, along with the emotional crash and wrecked lives that come at the end.
I was 16 when this came out,I was turned on by cloris leachman,I never cared about names ,so all the talk about Sybill being this new hot surprise at school,I thought they were talking about cloris charachter! Lol.
Really a classic movie, but oh so sad. Sonny and Ruth loved each other, but remember what era and environment they were in. In the novel, it's pretty clear that Ruth's husband, the coach, is gay. So she was dying for some love and attention.

Goodbye, Cloris.
I never realized how beautiful Cloris Leachman was until I saw this movie.

Nice observation, 100% true.. You can sense and see the longing.

Loved the angle and the lighting of this scene. Loved how I didn't see this coming when I first saw it.
Robert Surtees was a brilliant cinematographer. He photographed The Sting, Ben Hur, and many other great films.
Such an amazing film with wonderful performances.

A pair of star-crossed lovers...
RIP Cloris Leachman. 27 January 2021.
I wish Tim Bottoms had been in more movies
I just realized what the song is during the kiss! "Sweet Genevieve" ! I would love to find the version played in this!
This has become one of the classic forbidden, uncomfortable scenes.
I don't really consider this scene uncomfortable, the Cybill Shepherd pool scene was way more uncomfortable to me personally
@@ctrl_altesc The ones I consider uncomfortable are the guys feeling sorry for the pedo and him defending the guy who cracked his eye
Our beautiful and talented Iowa Girl from Des Moines...
this film is a masterpiece for all involved. -C
I know that BEAUTIFUL Song during the kiss scene, But can`t remember the title!! It sure makes this scene just wonderful!
Sweet Genevieve
You get a sense that Sonny wanted to kissed her in full honesty for everyone to see. That her being discreet turned him off.
"Cloris the Cradle Snatcher"!😄
Blew my mind. I just found out Cloris was the mom on Lassie before June Lockart. A great, versatile actress if ever yhere was one.
