10:04 I was thinking "Carl's a scientist... I'll be really disappointed if he doesn't liken this to the double slit experiment." I wasn't disappointed.
Yeah the reference doesn’t really work for double slit, more something quantum, where observation changes the outcome. Double slit is just a demonstration that light waves constructively and destructively interfere
@@Hottubbs it's not just a demonstration of that, its a demonstration that individual photons interfere with themselves, but only when you don't know which slit they went through
@@Hottubbs No the double slit experiement changes the result based on if it's observed. i.e. unobserved = wave interference pattern, observed which slit photon entered = looks like particles. This must be a quantum effect, right?

@ the science bit at the end... I never realized one could actually hit the *end* of their field, even if it is a specific branch that you've mastered! That's part of why I love the sciences actually, I figured they were never ending ways to learn and refine your knowledge!
it's not really the end though. It's just the time you have to invest to achieve a meaningful breakthrough is not worth the effort at some point in your career. That is of course subjective but best understood if we take into consideration the drive for creativity. Often in many fields of science creativity is secondary to meticulous documentation, constant publications and particular diligence - which can bore the creative mind.
The problem is that it takes years for the field to continue to advance, and while I'm excited for those new results, I need new things to do in the mean time XD

Re: the science stuff - the special ability of Ernest Rutherford as a scientist was his "capability to be astonished". He could do the same experiment dozens of times with dozens of people and then see something weird, what might normally be discarded as a real random mistake, and to see it in an unexpected way. He could then create a new project for one of his graduate students to investigate this anomalous event and turn it into nobel prizes for everyone. One other idea you might consider - is it possible there are anomalies in vaccine science you could cause and investigate?
The real problem here is money and resources. I don't have a lab or... money. I could absolutely endlessly generate ideas if I had the means to test them all. The means I do have take 6 months to a year to test one variable. Whereas with other fields (such as when I worked on plant viruses, for instance), I could test 10 new ideas in a week for minimal cost. Because vaccines must be tested in living creatures currently, it's just a lot slower and more costly. The solution to my "it takes 8 months" problem is to run many many experiments in parallel. Give me a team and tens of millions of dollars and sure I could do that, but that's not as reasonable as simply moving into a different field XD
@@CarlSagan42 Whatever you decide to do, just know that we enjoy your material and we hope you find work that's compelling. 3:36 -- Oh wow. You get a preview of the next section, and you can tell it's showing you the right place because of the door unlocking. In the preview, there are two vines, but when you go through the door, there is only one vine!
I've seen something like this before, I think the extra vine grows out of a moving question block that is blown up at exactly the right time to make the vine stop growing exactly where they want it to. Going through the door resets the block and also removes the vine since it's not a baked-in level element.
Do what you want, but if you go back to school, I really suggest getting a PhD in astrophysics, like you said! It seems like a really fun and challenging field!

I just had a stupid idea accidental vine entry instead of accidentally going into a door instead of a vine, a vine is grown at the last moment before entering a door, causing you to climb the vine to your doom instead of going into the door
I believe it's been done, it falls into the category of "hold up setups." You can also make it so it looks like there'll be a platform you can stand on to go in the door, but it moves and that's what causes you to climb the vine instead.

I think somebody needs to diagram that for us because I've been staring at that thumbnail way too long and don't see any part of it that resembles a toad.
Carl, I need to put on my most indignant, nerdy, nasally voice and correct you. The double-slit experiment establishes the wave/particle duality of light. It has nothing to do with the quantum effects related to observation. At least not in the terms you were referencing. That being said, photons are thought to be massless, and who really knows what that means? Also, I didn't really watch any of this video. I just had it on in the background until you said a thing I didn't agree with.

The tools you use to make the observation touch the wave/particle just like in the troll the climbing to raise the screen (tool) changes the muncher placement (particle/wave).
