Maybe I just missed it, if so my apologies. But one very big positive for me was the music. Which is phenomenal or at least I thought so. Most NGDev games have great music and this one was exceptional!

I don't think I mentioned it, but you're right, it is very good - and very atmospheric in places.
Awesome news about the Toaplan documentary, by they way - I just saw it made it past 150%!

Totally agree. This music matches the aesthetic, which adds to the overall presentation. And I love the slot-machine-like sounds when collecting cubes; makes me care more about scoring.

The soundtrack is just ridiculously amazing let's be honest

Thanks for another well-considered review, SoS. Totally agree on the rapid/focus shot strangeness. I’m glad you have an eye for niggles like that - all the little things seem minor, but all add up to the uber-important abstract dimension of ‘gamefeel.’

I actually watched this video with the hope that it might address the rapid/focus shot thing. I thought maybe something was wrong (with me or the game!) for not readily discerning the difference--glad I'm not the only one!

glad to hear another well rounded review. the hype and drama really soured me on this one. like, i heard so many people talk it up and knew it couldnt live up to that, but when i actually played it and found an ok but unremarkable game full of issues i was real bewildered.
those issues you mentioned, alongside the real stiff art really just makes this one hard for me to stick with, even if it might have a mechanically ok base.

I bought it off the eshop as my first ‘premium’ shmup. I love it. I’m not very skilled so the simple mechanics are perfect to just zone out, enjoy the music and try to 1cc novice.

I'm a very casual shoot'em up fan and I really love this game. I don't really pay attention to the scoring system but instead just focus on how it plays, how it looks and how much I like the music and this ticked a lot of boxes for me.

The one thing that made this game so appealing was the aesthetic..

I do love the look of this game, but everyone lost their minds when the physical copies went live. I grabbed Sturmwind on the switch instead and I've really enjoying that game.

NGDev has announced another physical batch release this year. Hopefully we can get one this time. Last sale sold out in few minutes.

Fantastic review. I love this game! Figuring out the scoring system was really fun, but I still don't know how far it can be pushed (never got past 1.3B and wonder if several billion is a possibility or not. I wish there were online leaderboards or a superplay somewhere)

Off topic but you made me research about how many countries drive on the left side of the road and how many drive on the right side of the road. Ending up learning about the history behind it and how in ancient times they designed roads that way as the majority of people are right handed. This meant that when riding horseback along a path or a road, their right hand was free to draw their sword just in case they encountered any trouble along the way.

The game looks great! But for the simple fact that they made it impossible to get a copy physically, It left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't even want to give them my money for the digital copy. I really wanted this physically.

May I ask some suggestions from anyone here? This feels like the perfect Channel for this. It's been some time that I'm trying the shmup genre and I'm really really digging the Strikers classic games gameplay on android, are there any suggestion for some similar but newbie-friendly games for the switch? preferably with orizzontal scrolling to fully use the screen comfortably (but suggest even vertical ones! I'll add em to the list ^^).
The art style can be whatever, even with space and aliens like r-type,blazing star etc
Just not bullet-hell,not with everything gigantic and excessive like denmaku, noob friendly/Easy and preferably orizzontal scrolling (but again, suggest even vertical ones!)
For now i've tried Ghost Blade HD and Anger force reloaded, but i don't know, they did'nt Stick with me, probably visually, i don't know, but i ended up returning to the Strikers ones :/

Deathsmiles is a great newbie-friendly horizontal game. I'd also recommend Devil Engine, which came out a few years ago. My favourite Arcade Archives hori is Blazing Star - not the easiest, but one with really, really fun and intricate scoring mechanics that make replaying the first stages fun every time. Also, you can't go wrong with Cotton. Rock 'n' Roll and Reboot are my two recommendation on Switch.

@@ShmupsOnSwitch Seriously, thank you very much for all the reccomandation! I'll save em all on the Wish list and I'm going to rewatch all their relative videos ^^ Btw I bought Missile Dancer some time ago After your review and It was super fun, thanks for that too!
I've seen that the guy who made It has released on the eshop Gemini Arms which seems really great too, if you havent already give it a try , maybe you'll like It and make a review :)

This is one game that was a day one purchase for me. Then I found out it was physical only and limited. i did not bother to try and buy it. I am glad it came out digitally but I have yet to buy it. This would have been a day one purchase if they released it the same day as the physical version. I still want the game but I lost the hype I had for it before launch. hopefully this game sold well. The devs make good games. I feel they just screwed up with the release of this game.

    • @ShmupsOnSwitch

It was a bit awkward, but I think they just underestimated how bad the scalping would be. Hopefully Gunvein will be handled a little differently cause, like you said, they certainly do make good games.

It's a good game, but not $150 to $250 USD... And games like Drainus and G-Darius look and play a lot better, IMHO.

Just scored it factory sealed on ebay for $180 AUD ($117 USD). But yeah, the majority of the ones for sale are an absolute rip off. I felt ripped off even spending $180 tbh but I know I’m never going to see it cheaper than that going forward.

I was so bummed this game never was released on the Sega Dreamcast like their previous SHMUPs. I have NG:DEV.TEAM's Dreamcast release for GunLord, Last Hope: Pink Bullets, and Fast Striker Ver. 1.5, the only one im missing is Neo XYX. The way they do their limited releases all their games are so hard to get, the Indie Dreamcast community loved them and supported them but they just stopped. They really came off like a bunch of snobs with how they dealt with the digital release of this game.
