- Delightful! Hazelnut Hex Shoot Em' Up Review | Nintendo Switch, PC. This extremely cute Shoot Em' Up came out of nowhere! Today I look at a new indie shmup created by Chunderfins that not only has appealing cartoon graphics, and awesome funky soundtrack (ost), but also rock solid gameplay and an interesting scoring system. I first became aware of this game by seeing it pop up on @plasmo6903 and @JaimersSTG channels and I'm really glad they have showcased the game! One amazing thing about the arcade genres is that every so often you are treated to completely out of nowhere releases that are excellent and worth your time, Hazelnut Hex being one of them. You can get this badboy on Nintendo Switch (it plays well in handheld mode), but you can also pick it up on PC via Itch.io. I know a lot of you are married to playing only PC games on Steam, but I hope you all can break out of this mindset because there are a lot of fantastic non-steam shmups on the PC and this game is one of them. I recommend if you want a launcher client use the completely free playnite :-) It would be cool to see this game come to other consoles like the PS4/PS5 and Xbox!

YOOOOO!!! Long time fan of your channel, extremely cool and very surreal to see you covering my game!! Massive thanks for the in-depth review and the feedback! Very glad you had fun with the game!
No problem at all! Excellent work on the game I really like it s art style, music, and the gameplay is solid :-)
Loving it so far. Just managed to beat the default high-score.
Can't believe i paid under $3 for this AMAZING game!
Instant like for this channel.
Its original authentic no sell out.
Everything thats so rare in YT today.
And underappreciated for sure.
Thank you so much my friend:-)
Reminds me of something WayForward would make. It’s like they took a girls trapperkeeper from the early 2000s and turned it into a Shmup
Ha yeah for sure!!
I'm usually not in to the cute aesthetics in shmups, but this one actually looks like fun. Definitely going to grab this on itch. Great to see you giving Playnite a mention as well. I use it as a front-end in one of my cabs.
Yeah it s a great front end!!
Saw this game blow up on Twitter a while back. It's a shame that blowing up on twitter can do so little for shmup developers. It does look like it has great presentation! I'll probably grab it tonight and have a go.
Are you releasing your title on itch? I'm looking forward to seeing how that turns out for sure! Your passion for genre is admirable! *Salutes*.
I will release hob on itch! Absolutely! Stage 1 alpha next month :-)
@@TheElectricUnderground Oh that's great! Well done getting things going. I know you've dipped your toes before in game dev & glad to hear you're making steady progress this time!
I've been working on an unannounced twin stick/shmup (bit of a hybrid thing) for a couple of years. It's been -brutally- slow going. Keep at it and I hope you get there! It would be very cool to see you release a game! I would love to see an update after the test with your findings! I watch a lot of that kind of thing as well 😅.
It's so funny you posted this. I downloaded this game a couple weeks ago and thought it was really fun. I thought it would be great if you did a video on it, but I figured there was no way you would. Glad I was wrong!
You can never predict what I ll post and do on the channel ... Because even I can't predict what I ll do in more than a week in advance ha
This looks exactly like the game I would have liked that GBA Danny Phantom shmup to be, gonna have to check this out!
Yeah I def get those 2000s cartoon vibes :-)
Downloading now!
Saw the release trailer for this a few days back and it really caught my eye. Glad to hear it's as solid as it looks!
Yeah I was skeptical seeing a shmup from a new dev, but definitely a promising talent!
Bought it after watching this review. What a great game. Thanks for the recommendation 🙂
No problem! Always cool to pick up a new find :-)
I keep all my shmup emulation stuff in one folder as well except mine is titled “STG never die!”
Thx for the coverage!
No problem!!! Always cool to spotlight a cool sneaky release like this one
reminds me of one of my favorite xbox 360 shmups: Trouble Witches NEO! Had a blast with that game so will def pick this one up! Nice video :) ... man what a great selection of shmups the 360 had now that I think about it. I need to go back through my collection and play those again...
Yeah the 360 is a shmup powerhouse, still play mine frequently
Damn dude, you like read my mind it feels like. I saw the trailer for this game over on the shmup subreddit and I thought it looked fun, LOVE the colors, but I was just like "there's no reviews on this game and I'm so swamped with games rn I don't know if I wanna make a splurge purchase...." and then BAM, your channel just drops a review, lol. Glad to hear it's as good as it looks, I'll definitely be picking this up for my Halloween game this year!
Yes that's always really cool when that type of thing happens!! Glad the review was helpful my friend :-)
Devs might as well just put a marked-up version on Steam for diehards imo
Yeah I think the way to go is release on itch first and then bring to steam afterwards
Saw this on my Twitter TL the other day. Thanks for the review and reminder too 👍
No problem!!! Wanted to cover it before it dropped into the internet void
i played this last night and i was thinking the artstyle reminded me "cartoon cartoon" and im glad you noticed it too
For sure my friend, it s the decent powerful girl shmup we never got ha
Reminds me of the animated intro from the old B*Witched TV show from the 60s / 70s
oh absolutely! Such a cool show :-)
Nice review.Liked the itch plug.Playnite is probably the best option but thought I'd mention that you can also just have a folder and add the games to Steam as well.I do this as I sometimes use steamlink and at times it can be a pain if trying to use it with games not in the library at times. But then again I'm no pc expert so there are probably ways round this.Btw love stage 2 theme as it reminds me of Darius 2 with the Greek landscapes and the undead fish!
Oh yeah I wonder if you can trick steam into having it in the library, that s a good point
I bought this game last week had a ton of fun with it.😁
Absolutely really solid shmup :-)
Thanks for the game tip! By Switch standards, the game is available for a very fair price and I haven't regretted buying it.
Reminds me of Magical Chase.
I picked this one up day one on Switch because of how cute it was. Its such a good time and I love the colors!
It does have a delightful art style!
This style is adorable, it's art reminds me a bit of Cosmo Dreamer, but a lot more defined and polished.
(Also thankfully appears to be free of the item/bullet confusion Cosmo Dreamer gave me)
Definitely downloading this.
Yeah the style is great! Well done just needs a little more effects and such I think. Still very solid 🪨
Hahahahaha “put more shit on the bullets!” Love it
Yeah bullets are a big visual element, so always good to beef up
This looks very solid, thanks for the tip!
Nice review!
Thank you my dude!
Fantastic analysis
Thank ya MooDog!
Where’s your winter designs mark? It’s getting really cold out here, me and my partner will die from frost bite without the new shirts
December is the month :-)
am counting it will get a physical release for the Nintendo Switch 🙌
This game is highly inspired in Trouble Witches
Nice!!! I actually have never played that one :-)
2:30 and a good chunk of the gaming community is going to call it "generic".
Yeah brutal to shmup dev
I hope your theory is right because literally nobody knows of me as a Developer yet and my first game is a Bullet Hell lol. Definitely not doing it for money, I'm just a fan girl lol
It's not guaranteed, but I think it's generally more likely XD
This looks fantastic. My only worry is that the mechanics look veeeeery much like Luffee in Cotton Rock N Roll (which also has like six other characters). But-look forward to it anyways, as i love Cotton RNR!
Oh yeah it might be like that game, I still haven't played it ha.
Reminds me a bit of muse dash I think it's called?
Oh cool, never played that :-)
what about "Never Awake"? I haven't seen anyone mention that game?
It s coming, give me time I ll try to get that game reviewed before December
If the Bullet would be a different color some exklusive to the shot maybe Looking better.
Yeah a pallet change would be cool
As we say in the indie dev scene. Juice it up
That s a great saying ha. Yes add the juice
Great review ...
Thank you :-)
Cute game.
It is!
The color palette is a bit too PINK for my tastes, but regardless it's a solid and fun game! I think it's a good introductory bullet-hell style shmup with its presentation and difficulty.
I'm no SHMUP expert, but felt like moderate should have been "normal" though lol
Yeah I think the game could benefit with more slight variations in the palette as well, like some purples to offset some of the pink.
Awesome :)
Yeah fun time!
looks epic
just beat it, it is epic
Fantastic!
Update: The voice actress turns out to be a liar liar pants on fire.
Looks fun. I understand your thoughts on the graphics, but when it comes to cheap production is probaby the best choice. Cartoon network uses the calarts style , it has simple design for characters, abstract minimalist backgrounds . Not a style that i love, but does the job with minimal costs. Can´t understand why some developers don´t launch their games on steam. If i did not saw your video probably i would never know the game. Yes the profit is bigger (comission in steam is a steal), but the the number of buyers is smaller.
So I think the strat for release is release on it first to the hardcore crowd (get better return) and then bring to steam for the random buyers
It is not cal arts. That is more of a angular and shape pastel based style, somewhat between PPG and Puyo Puyo Sonic team style.
Not bad. Liking what I've played so far. It's a bit like Neko Navy.
It is! Though I personally like it more than Neko. Neko is a cool game though.
@@TheElectricUnderground Neko Navy's a little friendlier/easier, but Hex's pretty great if a bit tougher. Can't tell how long I've been playing it yet since the Switch profile just reports how long I've owned it so far, but it must be about 3-4hrs.
🎃
Halloween is coming!
I always hope for a physical release, switch is usually the best bet for that.
Yes, though I think devs should start doing PC physical releases in some form, why not the barrier to entry is even lower.
@@TheElectricUnderground I would really like to see physical releases on PC again, even if it's nothing more than a USB drive in a basic box.
I can't remember the last time I saw pc games in physical format.
cute
Very :-)
Egad. This looks like it would give me a headache.
Oh I love colorful stuff you can actually make the background darker though in the options menu
