When i first played FO4 (my first FO game i ever got the chance to play), i did not get how to hack...i knew how to pick locks like a mf, thx skyrim, but it took me forever to understand the hacking mechanic...i still dont think i fully, 100% get it, lol. I get em enough to successfully hack em, buuut, idk haha.
I just barely found out you could remove duds and all that jazz. For years, no matter how long it was (I love letters), I would randomly guess the first one and then figure it out. Sometimes I'd mess up and use the three tries and have to start over but once you figured out how it worked it was a fun and easy little thing.
@@spook9155 You know how when you pick a word it will say how many are correct? That tells you how many letters are the correct letter in the correct place. Let's say it's a four letter word. We pick "love". It says 2/4 correct. We then pick "Lots". It says 2/4. Finally we pick "Load" and we get it. In that situation the "L" and the "O" are correct but the other two letters are not. You always start from a random word on your first guess and from there you see how many letters are in the correct place and see what other words have similar letters (or if you're completely wrong words that are different).
I usually like, guess all of the 3 and then go through all the brackets so I don't accidentally get a "get all guesses back" when I'm already at full guesses
Once you're down to 1 left, you can use the bracketed characters without losing your last turn. They can remove words that you haven't clicked yet and also reset you turns completely so that you can narrow it down to a word you haven't selected yet. If it's more advanced then you might need to back out once you reach your final turn of the reset though. It's not too big of a deal backing out with the consoles these days, but I remember the bugs being so awful on the ps3 back in the day that just backing out of the terminal would cause it to stutter and take almost a minute to load out and back into the thing.
I've found that I have the opposite tendency: larger passwords have less common parts and are therefore easier to clear. It's pretty ironic that I find easy passwords harder; I always run into a bunch of words with 3 letters similar, which means I'll exhaust my tires before finding the right one.
Difficult hacks can usually be solved in the fewest guesses, although not the fewest headaches. More letters=more similarities. However, I usually pick out two words and then start running the matched pairs until I get my tries replenished or I have only one word left that makes sense.
I do them the intended way. It's surprising how many people didn't know about duds and password resets considering how the bracketed characters become highlighted unlike everything else that's an individual characters.
Hacking Fallout terminals: There is actually a very easy way to hacking any level of terminal. Just count the vowels. Virtually every word that unlocks a terminal is the word that has the odd man out number of vowels. If all of the words have an even number of vowels, except one which is odd, the password is likely the one with the odd number of vowels, and vice versa. It is extremely rare for there to be an even spread of words with variant number of vowels in the consoles in game.
I guess the first word, then guess the 2nd based on the correct letters, then I make a 3rd guess usually with smaller terminals it's completed by then but if it's not solved I use the bracketed characters until I get a tries reset and continue
i literally just today found out i could remove duds, I've been playing about 4 months and i can only remember one time that i actually struggled with hacking a terminal
I never knew how to remove duds while playing FO3 and NV for the first time so just took random guesses. Replaying NV on Xbox one (which was so much better than playing on PS3) I found out how to remove duds now that's my go to.
Is NV functional on Xbox one? I've been a bit on the fence about buying one.... but I'd love to play through NV. I gave up (I don't have the constitution you do) after just way too many issues on PS3.
Exactly what you described at the end. 3 tries sometimes actually trying to guess it proper by using the clues, reset with duds, then make sure i get all the duds to really narrow down options, and then try again.
I've never found the terminal puzzles to ever be that difficult. Especially bigger words, they tend to have a lot of crossover that makes it especially easy to rule things out.
Random guess try to find words that work better stop at final guess and use all the brackets to get rid of duds and get a try reset if i dont manage to get a try reset i take down the words that are left wnd back out and md try again
I like how much easier it is to brute force it in fallout 4. You get 4 tries base, with chance of up to 3 more when getting a tries reset, thats total tries. Or you can get the bobblehead from vault 75 + nick valentines perk to get 6 base, 5 on reset for a total of 11 tries! Combine that with dud removals and you can basically crack any terminal first go as long as you aren’t a idiot like me and select words twice.
for some reason the only times i’ve ever done hard and very hard terminals it’s always either the first guess or the second one otherwise take out some duds, one guess, more duds, more guesses and resetting tries and backing out
Took me dozens of Fallout 3,New Vegas, and 4 playthroughs to realize how you have to match the letter position, i had usually just guessed before exiting and reentering the terminal when i was one my last attempt
I heard from somewhere that right choices dont have more than one of the same letter, for example, “different” but it was proved wrong when i tried this
It only took me about 4 years to find out, but I pick a first, then a second and *meticulously* sift through the ones that match with the toothest of fine combs ever conceived
For me I try three guesses, removing duds (And hoping for a reset as it doesn't always happen) if I get a reset and remove most if not all available duds, I try and pick from the words left, if I fail to hit a reset I back out and try again
Blindly pick the very first option, if it's not right I back out and try the very first option again and again. Usually takes three or four go arounds before I get it on the "first" try.
Before it finally made sense to me, I used to guess three random entries, and then I'd back out before locking it up and try again until I guessed the right one. Now I only open a terminal once and I've never had to pick more than 3, even with very hard
Since I learned about the brackets, I have two or three guesses, then find brackets until I've removed some words and got the tries reset and then it's fairly easy to work out the answer. Some it's quicker to work out than to search for brackets tho.
Backing out after 3-5 guesses is what I do. That’s the best way to brute force it without having to worry about being locked out. I was elated to see this still worked in New Vegas and again in Fallout 4 when I first played them!
For me the longer ones tend to be easier since the words have more letters that aren't the same. I tend to do the brackets first then try the remaining words as best I can.
Depending on the difficulty level, I will either do one or three guesses, more guesses the easier it is, then I will take out duds. This is easily my favorite mini-game in Fallout, these kinds of simple logic puzzles are so much fun to me
Its actually pretty easy. You first find out which letter is used the most in the same position and test to see if the right one. I usually use the bracket when i have 1 or 2 attempts left.
I started to play fallout since Fallout 3 it was around 6 maybe 7 years ago and only now have I realized how terminal hacking works and that you can make it so much easier by removing the duds
I always, always, always do three random attempts as quickly as possible then back out and try another three and back out until I get the right one. I’ve known about the dud removal and matching letters between attempts for a long time now thanks to Oxhorn, but except for a very brief time shortly after learning these options existed and I tried them out for a week or two, I’ve always brute force guessed them.
My first guess is a word that fits the theme of where the terminal is located (like "defend" at a military base) then I'll make two more meticulous guesses. Then go through all the hacks to get rid of duds and restore guesses. After that point, I pretty much know what the answer is.
I usually guess based on the location of the terminal, this usually only works on the first 3 tries if you choose to reset after them so avoid locking the terminal. But more often than not especially on fallout nv and 4 it’s very much based on the building you’re in or the enemies inside
I usually guess whichever one has the most “variety,” then rule out the ones that have no match, and then work my way through the rest. Usually works pretty well.
When I figured that out I was amazed and used it. Makes a lot of sense to try a couple times then figure out some duds incase you get full reset on your attempts
for the Longest time, id always backout and reset the attempts.. didnt even know you could find things in the characters until watching something much later lol
I'll pick my favorite word out of the options, or the one I think Todd Howard personally would like (works first try like 45% of the time) and then I'll go legitimately from there, looking at each word to see if it matches the likeness.
Enter, guess use all but one of the guesses. Leave the terminal, and then re-enter. You get all your guesses back without the terminal locking you out.
I do it exactly the way you described it but with one important caveat. If you end up getting the worst possible 0/7 etc etc, then you hit gold because none of the characters are in the password!! It helps a lot and sometimes I’ll get it on my second guess.
I look for the most matching letters in positions among words and pick that first (like, there are 3 letters that end in 'ER'). That either narrows it to ER words or non-ER, and I'll usually try one and then start stripping dude and aiming for a count reset to poke at the rest.
I do the first word guess, then solve based on matching options. For the first word, I try to start with something relevant to the location or faction.
I always look at the selection of words and then think to myself what would be the most appropriate word for the tone in the vault in question? Nine times out of 10 it’s the right word when I choose!
When I played fallout 3 the terminal passwords usually have some aspect of where or what they vaguely are for say turret terminal passwords have something to do with what it's used for "enemy" "stranger" "invasion" "looters" "danger"
I start with the first 3 options in a row. A high percentage open from those. If that don't work I find all the bracketed characters. Usually the answer is all that's left. But if not, I back out and try again
i used to just choose the first 3 words and reset the terminal by exiting and reentering. but more recently my strat was actually guessing the first 3 and then using all the brackets to get more guesses or remove the duds. then if the answer is obvious i pick it or if i don't know i repeat.

A good tip for people having trouble with any word, count the number of options, and then check different words for repeating letters. If two have the same amount correct then a similar word may be right, if one you pick has 0 right you can rule out all similar words.
Example in the beginning, TRICK and TRIED, you pick one and it says 3 right, it might be the other, but 0 and no point trying anymore words starting with TRI, or ending in the last two letters.
i like puzzles
Random
That’s how you hack
thank you
I solve them the same way you do man, except fo4 since there’s no penalty for losing

i used to select every symbol except full words and then pick a word and it would usually unlock the terminal
i mean it’s a kinda long process but fun
I thought the same thing! I'm glad I wasn't the only one ham-fisting my back attempts!
See, I dunno how to do that. What's your process?

I completely agree. It can be really annoying when it's a 5 letter word and all you know is it ends with ing or something
The novice level terminal is objectively the hardest terminal in the game
Difficult hacks can usually be solved in the fewest guesses, although not the fewest headaches. More letters=more similarities. However, I usually pick out two words and then start running the matched pairs until I get my tries replenished or I have only one word left that makes sense.

And ya know, the massive popup every first time you hack in any game.
I'm the exact same way as you in 3, NV, and 4. However in 76, I always spam 3 tries and then back out. Don't want to die while using the terminal!
Same here as well

i always just go 3 random guesses then go do the bracketed codes that remove duds or give tries and continue from there

Similar to the locks, I try shooting it before telling Nick Valentine to hack it
First i use up my tries until i have 1 try only, then i use those [ ] and {} < > () and then i get allowence replenished and unlock it with ease

I don't have a damn clue how to hack a terminal. I'm just pressing everything)))

I look for words that end in expected ways (eg. ing, ion and ed) and make guesses to narrow the pool of words
I back out after a second failed attempt and restart. That lets you get more guesses in faster and never have to wait for that cooldown.
Use all but one of my guesses, try to reset tries, accidentally find the right one.

My ganes design course had us learning about Mastermind and I generally hack accordingly.
Guess first 3, remove the Dud then try the next 3 time and lastly back out
I guess when it comes to smaller words, with bigger ones I look for ing's, tion's, and so forth, resorting to brackets last
After playing so much fallout I do this super cool thing where I go into the menu and click on unlock terminal. It solves it every time!

Enter, guess use all but one of the guesses. Leave the terminal, and then re-enter. You get all your guesses back without the terminal locking you out.
i just search for the things to remove the duds first and then there will be one or two last words left
Three guesses, use the brackets, three guesses, ad infinitum

Funny! I was literally thinking about the hacking mechanic in FO4 a few days ago, and wondering how you did it! How wild!💞
I do it exactly the way you described it but with one important caveat. Very Easy Terminals are secretly the hardest ones of them all. I always just randomly press 3 and then back out till I get it.
Save first in case I accidentally lock myself out. Try three words,, back out, and repeat until successful.
hacking is probably one of the only times in fallout where it can be really hard but really fun at the same time
I didn't even know you could remove duds lmao. I just bring along Nick Valentine or Cait as pack mules and skeleton keys.
I do your 8 character strategy for everything, I don’t want to accidentally waste the guess reset if I don’t only have 1 guess left
