A fantastic series of videos on your channel . I remember when I used to walk the station in a window of 55 Broadway there was a fantastic large scale model of an RT type bus . I believe that the model was made by apprentices at Aldenham . As a model collector I could never get it out of my mind

Before the age of London Underground and in the early 19th century my ancestors had run a undertakers in this location 55 Broadway. I have census records confirming this and a fantastic story to go with it.

Well I'd thought I'd start from the beginning and see how it all started. Having seen the majority of Secrets of the Underground, I went looking for more of the same and came across this. This is looking really good so bare with me while I take everything in and catch up. Thanks for putting these together.

55 Broadway is a beautiful building. It's amazing that so much of the original building has been preserved. Even the original Waygood Otis lifts are still in use, which is rare in buildings of that age. Great Hidden London tour; well worth seeing.

I think City Temple (by Holborn Viaduct) had an older lift - in fact the first lift in the UK but it was scheduled to be replaced in the last couple of years. I haven't been back to check yet.

I used to work in 55b, there are some fantastic murals in the stair-wells. Also used to have breakfast or lunch on the roof terrace! Lovely building and that re-assuring rumble of the trains

Fascinating building, reminds me of the old BBC World Service Bush House in Aldwych where I used to work as Front of House security. English Heritage ran tours for the public. A similar building was an old hotel in Marsham Street which was used as an annex for the Lord Mayor. I'm not too sure whether the building is still there as it had subsidence.

The dome visible from the roof of 55 Broadway is the top of Methodist Central Hall, where the first ever meeting of the UN was held. Note that it is also slightly taller than Westminster Abbey.

I’m catching up with episodes 5&6 this morning, so I can watch 7 in real time today! The London Transport Museum was one of best discoveries I made when planning my trip to London last December (I had inexplicably overlooked it on previous visits), and these videos are easily the best find during lockdown. Many thanks for your happy enthusiasm and your generosity in sharing your knowledge. Sending fond gratitude from Chicago!

A great hangout. I loved visiting 55 Broadway, a great piece of architecture. All the detail put into its construction is fantatsic, I hope all the detail is retained and restored in any development.

Wicked. My friend Steve, left school in about 1976. First job was lift operator in a department store. The store had a Ground Floor, and a First Floor. Only. Poor Steve!

These hangouts are fabulous - please keep them going! I did the 55 Broadway tour back in September 2014 when it was open as part of the Open House London arrangements and still used as offices by London Underground. We got the whole trip round the outside explaining the various architectural points and through and up various floors, the staircases and then to the 10th floor and then the roof terrace. What has happened to the fantastic train interval paper disc machines that were located in the main entrance?

Thanks, all, for a another superb hangout! I hadn't previously been part of a 55 Broadway tour, so it was great to hear all the anecdote and detail about this iconic building. I have loved to see some of the innovation shown in some of the newer buildings which grace the skyline, but one wonders if they will stand the test of time as well as this one has. I'm so happy that it is still a building "of its time" and that minimal tampering has occurred in the meantime. Keep the episodes coming, guys!

Thanks, guys. Another excellent podcast. A great reminder of my 1st Hidden London Tour. There are so many interesting design factors, I'm sure you could make a Part Two. Shame you didn't show the train indicator in the lobby, and the drinking fountains! I do hope the Hotel have to keep most of the features?

Hi team, you are fabulous! I love the podcast and it is now a set part of my Saturday evening. I love (and miss London) and in a magical way you combine history, the underground, which is part of my life, architecture and now Art Deco, which I love and you even got Lego in there (I build buildings in lego). I couldn't have had a better programme if it had been designed especially for me. Just the best. Thank you, John

I've often wondered about the District Line platforms at Victoria, Sloane Square, Westminster (completely replaced), Embankment, Temple, Blackfriars, etc., having been re-decorated or re-tiled at least once, in some cases several times in the last 30-40 years or so, whereas St.James's Park has remained virtually untouched for all this time. I thought it could be connected with the listed status of 55 Broadway above.

Guys, thank you for what you are doing, these episodes are truly amazing!
I have a question for you.
When I visited the London Transport Museum in December last year, I noticed the small poster with the following info that caught my attention:
'...Many of these spaces will not stay hidden forever. As the Underground continues to develop, locations once disused will be given a new purpose. Equally, some stations used today may become redundant in the future. What else might these spaces be used for? If you are a budding entrepreneur with a good idea Transport for London may be keen to hear from you'.
Well, I think I am that 'budding entrepreneur', I wanted to ask you what would be the best way to share my crazy ideas? :)

Hi guys. I’m loving the hangouts. So interesting and can’t wait to go on the tours when they reopen. I’ve only had the chance to visit the Piccadilly one so far. A bit random this (and not related to 55 Broadway) but I’ve long wondered about flood gates in the tunnels. Are they still there? Are they still in working order? Or are they long gone now we have the Thames Barrier?

Not been in 55 in over 20 years, I once knew a receptionist on the ground floor, not the main reception we see today with all those doors and temperature gauges.
There was this man, he had a model London Transport RT bus in a glass case on the ground floor, as time went on, did go upstairs to one of the floors and offices, however, not certain as too why or what I had seen now, there was a stair case beside him, if only I had a better memory.

Not quite right about the BBC putting Bush House in the centre of a slum. It was built as a trade centre by some Americans between 1919 and 1935. The BBC moved in the European Service after the bombing of Broadcasting House in 1940, and it stayed until 2012

I live near the old Odeon ( now the Dominion Centre) and you can hear the Picc trains rumbling under our house.. sometimes in the early hours I can hear a works train which makes a different noise!
