- Manchester United have officially signed Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna for
£36.54 million. It’s an important and impressive deal for us to get over the line so early in the window. We’ve signed a striker that people generally aren’t too familiar with, but what’s clear is that he’s very different to what we already have in Rasmus Hojlund. It’s cliche to say, but Zirkzee’s strengths compliment Hojlund’s very well. This signing will prove useful for us this season. The key question is, what are the differences between the two? @@raymondggmu6207 Not what I meant at all. Yorke was more of a 10 and Cole was a 9. They complemented each other greatly and scored lots of goals. I think Hojlund and Zirkzee have the potential to be a similarly fruitful partnership.

Rasmus isn't played the ball, it doesn't mean he isn't involved in play. I've seen instances where he drops down hold the ball with his strength and starts a quick counter. His passing is very good
He is a fantastic player for HIS AGE. People being disappointed with him last season is baffling.
10 goals in 30 appearances at 21 years old, time out with injury, and when you look at the lack of service he received. Nearly all of those goals he scored with two touches in the oppositions box per game.

I wasn’t that excited about Zirkzee until my mate told me what he’s all about and sent over a highlights reel. Whilst I don’t think you can trust a reel it did show me that the guy is calm in front of goal. He’s not going to just smash a shot. He’ll take an extra touch if it means opening up the space to slot in the corner or wrong foot the keeper. He’ll score a lot more goals for United than he did in Serie A.
Could they build a relationship between them like Yorke and Cole? I hope so 😊

Other potential signings could be another ST but getting De Ligt would make our defense really solid since Yoro & Martinez alone scares the crap out of me.

Agree, it also forces 2cb marking Rasmus to go 1v1 or force the double up with the LB/RB. Either way we can take advantage of mismatches and spaces.
The easiest comparison to Zirkzee is he's alot like Welbeck he has all the physical attributes of a number 9 but his workrate and natural positioning he find himself outside the box linking the play rather than on the end of attacks.
Ivan Toney would be top notch at Utd. Considering the ice cold penalty he took in the Euros. He appears to have the arrogance and self belief to be a successful Man Utd striker..

not only are they different but complementary profiles, we'll benefit with having a competent striker to rotate with as well.

I think Zirhkzee is such a massive improvement on Weghorst who I think played a part in that season Rashford had. Plus Rashford had no tournament to play in he should be rested.

Interesting to think about Toney and Zirkzee from the functionality for functionality angle you brought up. If Zirkzee would be replacing/elevating parts of Mctominays game (providing we move McT on), i could see Toney providing the aspects we would’ve liked to have seen from Martial last season. From this angle i could see all three getting significant game time (as mctominay did and Martial would’ve gotten if he were fit), without all three of them fitting in an 11 at once, keeping in mind how we could cover the pure midfield aspects that would be missing from Zirkzees game (compared to McT) with Mount who seems to be lacking a real function at the moment.
I don’t think you can play Bruno alongside Mainoo but you could sit him alongside Ugarte or Neves. Bruno can also play wide… as can Zirkzee apparently. Options!!!
I mean hypothetically we could play Fernandes as the right wing (as Dalot overlab) Højlund right forward Zerkzee left forward (dropping down) and Rashford with the pace on the left wing. it wont be the main formation but could see in be one of the ways Ten hag would like to play as you would have Mainoo and potentially Urgarte behind them.
I think we’re going to need more like 18 first team players with Europa league, it’s crazy how much it takes a toll on your squad
Looking at the possibility of getting Toney as well, would this not mean that Zirkzee could be playing regularly in the 10 pushing Bruno back into one of the central midfield roles. That would then allow rotation of all four (started writing this before you covered this later on) and cover more game scenarios.
Since Ole we haven't seen that transitional fluidity we had in our run to the Europa league final. Cavani was central to that team a different player to Hojlund and Zirkzee and we saw Rashford, Greenwood and Martial all flourish.
Since that season we have struggled to score goals, Ronaldo's and Sancho's inclusion the season after saw us change shape and we became heavily reliant on Roonie's goals that season, 23 goals that year.
Erik saw the same problems and although a Rashford 30+ goals season saw us finish 3rd and win a cup, the problem was still there, nobody else had up to 10 in the squad that year, Martial slumped and we Saw Weghorst not get a single PL goal.
Last year the burden was placed on a 20year old to fix the issues, I always thought that was impossible, and with rashford's goals drying up, same problem reared its head.
Do I think Zirkzee elevates us, yes !!! And we need it across the board, he must play, the fluidity and responsibility of goals should be shared across the forward line, the only way to get us scoring is to get them playing, and get them occupying zones for others to score not necessarily themselves, the 3rd man runs, the underlaps, the crosses, the layoffs etc. Zirkzee is a step in the right direction.
So what's the attacking formation, an inverted Christmas tree (1-2-3-4-1) with a GK/Sweeper? Providing there's a good 7 and 11 in the team. With Toney is it a 4-2-2-2 Def/ 2-2-4-2 Att?
Or is this now the age of no formations, where every player dynamically moves to fulfil one of two roles depending on whether they find themselves covering for another team mate?
I think there are more changes than seen at MU.

Do you see a possibility that we play a 2 up top and go to a 442/41212? Seems like they would compliment eachother well but the question would be what happens to the wingers or midfielder that would need to go?

I think if Toney comes, we're definitely going to see more flexibility with our shape. Hojlund will probably be starting out wide more, or even have a 442 diamond at times, with Zirkzee behind Rashford and Toney maybe? More options the better imo!
Oddly enough, I think Ugarte suddenly becomes the most important part of this new system. If we do get him, along with already getting Yoro, we can finally commit another mid to attack, instead of forcing at least 1 mid to basically play at both ends of the field the entire game. Casemiro didn't have the legs for it, and McTominay and Amrabat were only decent at 1 end of the field. To be honest, and I CANNOT believe I'm saying this, but...last season, we missed Fred. All that said, if all we do the rest of the window is bring in Ugarte, I think it's a helluva start to transforming into a real contender again.
I'm more excited With ruud van nistelrooy joining the coaching staff and tuning the strikers and other forwards to be more lethal. Imagine an improved diallo,garnacho, rashford supporting Houjland and zirkzee
CDM is surely what we need most, after signing Ugarte I can't see anything else coming in. Though if we sell AWB surely we need a new RB

He's an attacking player, who plays more centrally due to his lack of pace.

Zirkzee could spearhead a 3, much like Frimino did for the scousers. Put a couple of pacy wingers to run in behind and you’ve got a nice solid base of 3 with ability to counter quick. Perhaps the 3 for a diamond with Zirkzee. Bruno and Mainoo in front of Neves or Ugarte. Hojland could even play as one of the wide forwards. Pretty sure he did that for Atalanta.
Zirkzee sounds like he would love playing with Sancho if he stays
If Sancho comes back into the team and plays to anywhere near his potential, then we have our forward line sorted.
Both he and Garnacho can play on either wing, Garnacho prefers the left... Rashford may or may not turn up, (apparently it all depends on whether Luke Shaw is fit...) Amad can shift inside on the right, and Antony could do a job if needed on the Right.
I'd love to see Antony tried out on the left some time, because that left foot is an absolute fucking wand, and if he were to start using it on the outside for crossing it would open up chances in the box for a competent forward. It might elevate him from being a one trick pony whose "trick" was figured out by ever opponent about 6 months into his first season.
I think he wouldn't fit with Sancho at all, because they are similar in that they both want to have runners around them, but neither of them is a runner. Sancho would fit better with Hojlund while Zirkzee fits better with Rashford

Zirkzee will be a better partner for Rashford/Hojlund/Garnacho than any of them are for each other, because all 3 of then focus on scoring more than link-up, whereas Zirkzee focuses more on the link-up.
If we signed Toney as well, I could see Zirkzee getting more minutes on the wings or at 10 than as a striker 🤔
Ten Hag has talked a lot about 2 players for every position. I don't think 3 strikers makes a 3-striker starting 11, even if there are some game-breaking meta tactics on FM
It would be great if 3 strikers can alternate games and prepare max for each their game-day opponent
So they get told who they play next, and can get really good on the training ground to prepare for playing the opponents defense

He needs people to pass the ball to him. Most of his goals last season were from him making chances for himself, because the wingers didn't cross and only Bruno would pass to him.
True but also mctominay scored lots of goals in the box where hojlund should have been. Hopefully ruud gets to mentoring and teaches him the runs to make. Not sure how many crosses Garno or rash will make this year either …

We're not getting Toney so stop reacting to every rumour. Toney will demand being our starting striker which would leave Hojlund shit out of luck and it makes no sense spending so much on Hojlund, now giving him the no.9 shirt and expect him to sit on the bench.
Toney would be better off with City or Liverpool...We normally operate with bruno passing to Rashford who will lose the ball...Toney would be just watching the game for the whole 90 without receiving any passes which might lead to a fight with our legendary left winger Rashford.

Toney ain't coming United. They're not signing another forward whilst our midfield is as robust as a cheese string.
Compare prime martial vs Haaland when he was 12. That's basically the differences these 2 have. Zirkzee is skillful, powerful, creative in every area. Rasmus is a big #9 with a poor touch but can be lethal if he gets service in the box
hojlund meat riding is insane. zirkzee is here to take the starting spot as the no. 9. hojlund is gonna play second fiddle. zirkzee brings more to the team than hojlund. in other words, he has the same type of skillset as martial did. he is the direct replacement of martial. martial was always supposed to be the striker ten hag wanted to use but he was always injured. look past the stat padding of hojlund and you will see how bad his team play is
