  • 15 years ago US Airways flight 1549 made headlines around the world when after suffering a double bird strike, Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger successfully landed his Airbus A320 in the Hudson River. As the plane glided towards the river the NYPD's Air-Sea Rescue Unit deployed from Floyd Bennet Field.
Watch as helicopter commander, retired Sergeant Mike Hendrix, and NYPD rescue diver Rob Rodriguez recount their experience 15 years ago today.

Every time I see this footage, I think about all of the ferryboats that were in the area, and without hesitation, they rushed to the downed airplane. They even had passengers - and with ESU ready to help- it was a beautiful thing!! New Yorkers got a chance to help people on a crashed airplane!

Later on I realized this event was a symbol of good things to come. My life took a turn around for the better after this. For 15 years I've been doing the right thing. The turn around came from my actions just like the bad times came from my actions.

❓ Question: What I would love to know is what are the other options for landing in a city like New York? I understand Central Park, but what if that was not available? Would they go ahead and try to landed on the road knowing that the wings would be ripped off and they would kill the commuters or is there something else? Because obviously they have to go down somewhere.
But I guess a big part of what I’m wondering is if he thought he only had a 10% chance of making it to the airport will you go ahead and risk that knowing that if they don’t make it to the airport they’re going to hit buildings and there is a 0% chance of living. Or would he try to set it down on a small narrow road that would definitely kill many people but at least it wouldn’t be hitting buildings?k
