LES GROTTES DE VALLORBE
(The Vallorbe Cave)
The Vallorbe caves or
the Vallorbe fairy caves
are located near the Joux valley
in Vallorbe.
These karst caves were dug
by the Orbe which disappears
at the end of Lac de Joux before
reappearing 4.8 kilometers further
on in the form of a resurgence in Vallorbe.
The underground system was
not explored until 1893 by a diver.
It was not until the end of 1961 that more ambitious expeditions took place in the basement and made it possible
to discover a vast network which
would be opened to the public in 1974.
It is believed that the origin of the caves is located around the beginning of the Pliocene, seven million years ago.
About a third of the cave development
can be visited via a route of about
an hour which is a tourist attraction.
The temperature is almost constant and is located in an interval between 8 and 11 ° C.

Inside these cavities, which are among the most beautiful in Europe, sits an exhibition of minerals, 'Le Trésor des Fées', bringing together a collection of more than 250 minerals from around the world under four cupolas dug into the rock.
