  • As perfusionist, we tend to come to work sick. I know what you may be saying, why are we coming to work sick because we could get the patients sick. We play a vital role in the operating room during cardiac surgery. If we do not have enough perfusionist for the day, someone may not be able to get their cardiac surgery done. That will mean we have to tell a cardiac surgeon he has to cancel his surgery for that day. This will not go over well. So we as perfusionist feel really guilty calling off sick because we have other people that depend on us to show up and get the job done. Of course unforseen circumstances happen in everyone's life. If we have a family emergency then we will most likely call out. That is normally the ONLLY time you will see a perfusionist call off sick.
So what if there is a snow blizzard or icy weather conditions? We still have to come to work. That is not a reason to call off. The cardiac surgeries for the day will not be cancelled. The patients always find a way to still make it to the hospital for their procedure so we have to too.
