    Could you please do a video on how to change your toe stops?

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 5 лет назад +54

      Stops are easy. Once you determine which type you have. Fixed or adjustable.
      Fixed stops have a bolt that goes through the stop. Simply loosen it with a screwdriver, pull out the bolt, get your new stop, push the bolt back through, then tighten the bolt back down again with the screw driver. In this case, the bolt is what holds the stop in place so be sure it's tight, but don't over-tighten it as this could cause stripping of the screw.
      Adjustable stops have a nut between the plate and the stop. If you don't see this nut, you have a fixed stop. Loosen the nut. In this case, the bolt is actually attached to the stop. Unscrew the stop until it comes out. Switch to your new stop. Screw the stop back in so it's as low or as high as you'd like it, then tighten the nut back up. In this case, the nut is what holds the stop in place so be sure it's tight, but again, don't over-tighten as it could cause stripping of the screw.
      That's really all there is to changing a stop. :)

      New skater mom w/ a preschool-aged kiddo here -- but I am a stay-at-home mom, not a working mom, so I'm sure this won't apply to many -- maybe not even you. Fwiw, I like to hope that my experience hasn't been too bad.
      Once my daughter could be outside w/ me, I'd do sports w/ her that she could do: strolling, bicycle trailer riding and then, as she got older, even paddleboarding on flatwater (i.e., lakes / reservoirs, w/ an age-appropriate life vest, and w/ me sitting on the board, padling w/ a canoe paddle) -- and swimming and diving (yes, even fairly young kids can learn if you teach 'em right). Granted, what's available to each of us will vary, but it's to provide some possible ideas. = )
      My daughter's four now and has loved it all. She's learned to ride a bike w/ no training wheels -- spent time on a jury-rigged balance bike -- fairly easy to strip out the pedals / chain -- and now she's trying to skate quads / inlines. I skate inlines and am doing what I can to help her learn whichever she'd like. I get to skate on my own when my daughter's at preschool (part-time) or the hubs is giving me a break after he comes home from work.
      I admit: when I need a break during the day, I do put on a video for my daughter to watch. Gotta take care of the parents, too -- or even just have a free kitchen to make lunch.
      There are typically ways to make things work if you are creative and just ignore the helicopter parents. The way I deal w/ the helicopter parents is that I just ignore their glares / dirty looks, avoid 'em when I can, and hang w/ moms who are more laid-back / more appreciative of my more free-spirited form of parenting. ; )
      Once the kids start school, I imagine the whole "free time" thing may get easier.... unless you live in a high cost-of-living area and have to work to pay bills. : / I realize that's a sad reality for a lot of folks these days -- although there are still some areas where housing isn't super-expensive just yet, if you can find a job that pays enough. Those areas are getting rarer but still exist here and there, if you know where to look. = )
      Raising only one kiddo with almost no support has been hard many times -- I'd think that two kiddos could hopefully learn to play together -- that's how it was for my sister and me -- but it's also been a lot of fun having only one, b/c of the things we've been able to do as a mother-daughter team. Hopefully two won't be too bad, especially as they get a skosh older. = )
      Our quality of life has varied considerably, depending on where we've lived. In areas w/ limited recreational / socialization opportunities, rampant dual-income workaholism and many helicopter parents, yeah, it's really stunk. Given the choice, I would never again live in such an area -- as a mom, or otherwise -- because I love to stay active and be myself. (Yes, there are some moms like that. = ) I know it can be hard to leave these kinds of areas, but leaving is not impossible. Sometimes you just gotta get creative in finding work in other areas, when you value other other things more.
      When we've lived in areas w/ lots of recreational amenities and other conveniences -- and a stronger sense of community / better opportunities to socialize w/ other laid-back / friendly moms -- it was definitely a way higher quality of life for our family as a whole. I'm hoping we'll be able to move to such an area in the next couple of years. Good luck w/ your situation! = )

      @@lyndagruen2047 I don't have kids myself yet, but i kinda feel you with the helicopter parent thing. I grew up having two older siblings, 10 and 7 years apart and we were/are living on a little farm in germany. My mom stayed at home for me (she worked when my siblings were small) but with the farm and having a bed and breakfast she still had a lot to do everyday and we used to do lots of things together like going shopping, sometimes by bike. My older sister got herself some inline skates when i was 4,5 years old and of course i wanted to have some too. So i got them aroung 5 months before turning 5 and even though i struggled at first cause no one could show me how to do it (my sister didn't skate that much, seeing she was in school and i only had kindergarten until lunch...) but i got the hang of it pretty quickly and became much better than my sister ever did. That winter i got some ice skates and my dad and i went ice skating on our neighbours lake almost every day (sadly nowadays lakes don't freeze that good anymore at our home, just not cold enough but there's an ice rink nearby).
      So: i'm sure your daughter will be really good with her skates in no time (seeing as your comment is 4 months ago she might already be a pro ;) )
      And for leaving your daughter "alone" sometimes to get some time for yourself or just to make lunch etc, i don't think that's a bad thing. I had really much freedom in that age, playing for hours alone in our garden and meadows or just laying down with my cats in the hay and it was the best time in my life and i think one of the best childhood experiences i can imagine. So don't worry too much about it. Kids are smarter than most people (especially helicopter parents) think they are and can handle themselver pretty well. As long as they know their boundaries and you are there to help if something comes up it is completely ok to not supervise every waking moment of their lives (and i say this as aunt of 5 children in the rang of 4 to 13 years who are just growing up as i was, pretty free and still supported wherever needed). So just enjoy your time for yourself!
      I also would like to see such a video, would be pretty interesting.

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 5 лет назад +17

      There is one up by Indy (with Pigeon) as for the boot.
      Plates: I'd leave alone. Whether you have nylon or metal plates, they both have metal parts. Get those parts wet and they will rust if you don't dry them properly...and unless you take the plate completely apart down to the kingpin, there are areas that are impossible to dry thoroughly while it's still together.
      Wheels: Get some Fast Orange or Orange Goop - both have a "smooth" formula (do NOT get the one marked "with pumice") - most of the bottles are "pump style". Squirt on one or two "drops" per wheel, spread it around the wheel with your finger, then let it sit for 30-45 seconds (maybe a bit longer if you've never cleaned them before), then simply wipe off with a paper towel. It's actually a hand cleaner for the automotive field (it takes off all the grease and grime) so it can be found in most auto parts store, places like Harbor Freight, home improvement stores, sometimes even dollar stores have smaller bottles, and both can even be found on Amazon. This said...if you only skate outdoors (never at an indoor rink), it's really not worth it to clean your wheels as you'll get build-up on them the second you go back out to skate anyway, but of course it's up to you. It is good for outdoor skaters to check their wheels every couple months or so, though. If you see cracks (rarely happens with urethane wheels, often happens on cheap plastic ones) or chunks missing (from going over really rough pavement), it's better to get new wheels instead of putting the effort into cleaning them anyway. You'll most likely feel it when you skate if there are chunks missing...but you won't necessarily feel those cracks in cheaper until it's too late.

    Could you do a video with more in depth information on wheels, like what wheels are used for which purposes and how to transition from outdoor wheels to harder ones?

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 5 лет назад +46

      Soft = outdoor. Hard = indoor. That said, there is quite a range in durometers. About the softest wheel you can find for a roller skate is a 70A while the hardest is a 103A. It's really a LOT more about personal preference than anything, but it also depends on where you skate. For the basics: Outdoors, I wouldn't go much higher than an 85A...indoors, I wouldn't go much below an 80A. Dirty rinks require a slightly softer wheel. Concrete (rink or outside) and asphalt require a very soft wheel to get over the cracks, bumps, and small twigs/gravel that is out there. A well taken care of wood rink means a harder wheel. If you skate a well-maintained wood rink and get a 70A, it can be like trying to skate in mud. Alternately, a well-maintained rink with a 103A can be like roller skating on ice! Especially for those new to skating. Smaller wheels allow you to be more agile, though a bit slower while larger wheels allow for less effort to keep rolling with a bit more speed. Experiment with wheels until you find a durometer and size you're comfortable with for the surface you skate on. In many places where skaters gather (parks and rinks) all you have to do is ask around. Most people will be willing to switch wheels with you for a few laps to test out the different durometers. For the majority of us, we want you to love skating as much as we do...and we know that having the wrong wheel for your environment can make it very difficult to skate. Don't be shy...get out there and start asking around! :)
      Granted, this is much more difficult if you're in an area where skating isn't as popular, but you can find some inexpensive wheels to play around with in every size and durometer if needed. You can always sell the old ones on EBay - or other similar sites - once you do find that set you really like.

      @@MystiqueRisingSun Thanks so much for the thorough information! It was confusing at first to figure out the nuances of wheels because I was being told go hard for the parks - and after skating with the Moxi gummy wheels at an outdoor park, I realized how much of a hindrance the softness and wideness of the wheels could be. Then my roommate went ahead and bought the Moxi trick wheels and had the hardest time at an indoor skate park because of all the lint. I was confused because Chicks in Bowls sells really hard wheels and a lot of people use them on wood ramps. Now I understand that first of all, you just have to get used to such a huge change in wheels, and secondly, there are probably indoor parks with much better cleanliness than out local one. However, we both have harder wheels now and they're a delight at the skate rink. We tried taking the Moxi gummy wheels there and you could feel how dangerous it is to be that stuck to the floor. Anyway, thanks so much for taking the time to reply! It's such a huge help to know how slight changes in durometers can give you more variety of experience than you would expect. And thanks for recommending inexpensive wheels to experiment with! I ended up buy the Riedell Sonar Rva Wheels, but I was hesitant since they're on the cheaper side. Turns out they're a great way to adjust to a harder wheel without investing a ton of money right away.

      @@rnbaker11 No problem. I know Indy and the girls can't catch "every" question. I've had wheels on my feet since I was 2...I'll be 46 in January. I pretty much grew up on skates, though I did take about 12 years off to have children. Rinks don't like pregnant women skating for some reason. LOL Seriously, though, I've learned a lot over the years and wish I'd had someone help me more. Trail and error have sent me to the ER one time too many. I just wish I had some way of sharing the knowledge other than creating a website or the like (which I'm really NOT good at.). In time, you might want to upgrade the wheels to something in a similar durometer, but...honestly, *most* wheels are the same if they're the same size and durometer...though there can sometimes be slight differences, too. My local rink, I actually use a 78A or lower because they never take care of it. Hitting a pebble - yep, on an INDOOR rink - is horrible. UGH! :( Hence why personal preference has so much to do with wheel choice more than anything. A good, confident, skater can honestly get used to any wheel on any surface for any purpose...but it's better to have something "close" to what you need for maximum benefit. Roll on! :)

      What does a flat spot on the wheel (tires inflate, wheels are solid pieces) have to do with....any of that? Are you saying he changed his wheels and didn't tighten the axle lock nut or that they weren't tight to begin with or that due to the aggressive nature of the skate park, the nut became loose?.....

      Wheels - especially without outdoor skating - will get worn down. If you skate outdoors (or on rough concrete rink floors) daily, you won't notice it as much. Look at the wheels closely when you get your skates (or just new wheels) and measure them with a cloth or plastic measuring tape. The kind made for sewing. Measure "around" the wheel as well as from the "top" of the wheel to the "bottom" (as they'd sit on your skate) as close to the center as possible. Use the millimeter marks, NOT inches, and make a note of those measurements. Once you lose roughly 3-5 millimeters, it's time to retire the wheel.
      As for bearings, you should check them regularly. How often depends on where you skate and how often you skate, but about every 1 to 3 months if outside/on rougher surfaces/6 months to a year if indoor skating only. If the bearing is dirty, you can clean it. Bones not only makes great bearings, but they also make a great cleaner! Usually that's all it takes. The only time a bearing truly needs to be replaced is if it gets damaged or rusts...that is...if your wheels aren't turning properly and cleaning them doesn't help, it's time for a new set.

    Do you need spacers with your bearings.... I’m new to this, and noticed while shopping for red bones bearing that they come with and without spacers... I noticed you didn’t use them here but idk if that always the case

    can you do a how to change your toe stop? i cannot get mine off...

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 5 лет назад +2

      This also depends on the skate itself, though. On many cheap skates (those under $70 or so for artistic/high-top booted skates and those around $50 or under for speed/jam/derby skates/low-top booted skates), they sometimes use Lock-Tite at the factory. It's great if you get the low or medium strength...but, sadly, many use the high strength or permanent versions...which means, you're NEVER going to get that stop off. :( If you paid more than that for your skates, it just might take a little extra "Oomph" to get them off since skate companies usually tighten them down by machine, rather than by hand. Good luck!

      She has several already. It's just a matter of how often you are able to practice. If you're skating every day, what she describes in the videos will take less time to learn than if you're only skating once a month. Practicing the motions on carpet or on a tiled floor - without your skates on - also helps build the muscle memory needed. With enough practice on carpet, and especially in socks on a tiled floor (so you get a bit of slide to help you feel the movement), your brain will start to remember once you are able to get your feet back into your skates.

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 5 лет назад

      If you still haven't gotten them, and you are still skating, it may be helpful to explain to your parents that learning on rentals or using someone else's skates makes it HARDER to get good at skating. Once you have your own, you can adjust them as you like them to make skating easier for you. Mine have had their own skates since my youngest was around 2...best investment ever! At 14, she's now a little speed demon and loves skating as often as possible. I wouldn't get super high end skates if your feet are still growing, but do NOT get "cheap" ones either. Cheap skates aren't good and good skates aren't cheap.

Thank you!!

    • @chelle5413
      @chelle5413 6 лет назад

      kaia rose it’s your wheels. I was a carhop at sonic for 4yrs. I had the Super-Grip Flame skates. The wheels were perfect for inside or even the parking lot during “lot sweeps”, but unless you have amazing balance, they weren’t great for he sidewalk. Try a softer wheel. Also, watch out for peppermints on the ground! Those are a carhop’s enemy

Ouch! :(

      You can change any plate or tricks to what you like. I made skates out of my old shoes...and I'm working on a second pair now! With shoes, you'll need the plate and mounting hardware. With skates, you'll just need the trucks (if that's all you want to change) or plates (if you're going for "full" metal versus the nylon). Unscrew the bolts holding the plate on (or the kingpin that holds the trucks on)...swap them out....put the new ones on, then just screw everything back into place. Also, be sure to get the proper plate size for your skates! Most will have size charts on sites or your local rink or skate shop will be able to help you there. :)
