  • Highlight rolloff is one of the primary things that can make or break your "film look" as it relates to a digital sensor. Film has the best rolloff that you can get, while some digital sensors don't quite match up. In this video, Lewis shows you what highlight rolloff is, and some ways that you can work around camera systems that are less than desirable.

This exactly the feature I was trying to articulate to a friend as to why Blackmagic cameras looked more filmic to my eye. I knew it wasn’t just their colour science but the key factor now that I analyse their footage in comparison to mirrorless cameras, is the highlight rolloff! 🙌 thanks for this video 👍

I would say the main reason for this filmic look is due to their higher dynamic range. If you have a bright clipping light the rolloff makes it appear more pleasing. But cameras with higher range even lead to way less clipping, which is even better than a sweet rolloff.

"Almost all log gamma curves and the majority of raw recording formats don't have a highlight roll-off." - Alister Chapman. RED cameras do not have any highlight roll-off. It is added in post by using one of their LUTs or the IPP2 workflow.

This came at a great time! I've been wanting to watch a video to explain this concept for the past few days and then i saw this was posted 7 days ago. Very informative!

Why not just underexpose and add in roll-off in post with curve?

genuine question from someone learning color grading: would there be any difference just doing this in post, like selecting the clipped regions, blurring, and overlaying? It's potentially more time consuming, but it seems like that would give the same effect with more control?

So, somewhat, yes. While you can add a bloom effect in DaVinci Resolve to somewhat mimic highlight roll-off, you will be adding a bloom to already clipped highlights. So it won't inherently look the same. You will just have a bright area with a haze around the area, opposed to a gradual decent into the highlights where you will be able to see some image data around the brighter parts of the image.

yes you can make roll off using curves; the thing is, to make really good rolloff you would need a more uncompressed file(braw would look the best). so depending on your codec of choice you are correct.

dont really see what bloom has to do with rolloff@@UglyMcGregor

I'd argue that highlight rolloff is a limitation of the rec.709 gamma and it can be fixed in post quite easily. The gamma simply cannot fit the entire dynamic range of the camera. Some cameras even allow you to modufy the knee and slope to adjust the rolloff point and its aggresiveness. This is simply called compressing the highlights.
Thankfully ST2084 gamma in HDR doesn't suffer from this nearly as much.
