  • A lot of you may know Earl Godwin from the show Vikings Valhalla. Here he is presented to us as a calculating man in the court of Emma of Normandy and Cnut the Great. Today I will be taking you to 11th century England where the Anglo-Saxon dynasty had been pushed aside and Viking Kings had taken over. Godwin would use the ongoing chaos to his advantage in order to gain power, this is his story.

    Thank you for highlighting the kingship of Harold Godwinson. He is much forgotten in history, being overshadowed by the Norman conquest.
    Being a descendant of this family, I much appreciate the fine job you've done.

      What a cunning man. How he played Emma of Normandy in order to marry Canute’s niece. A real chess player always 5 to 10 moves ahead.
      But Emma succeeded in spoiling his wedding night with the ring of the old man he had have killed although this man took care of him in his youth.

      @vkingcaesar Год назад

      @@alainka544 it wasn’t just the old mans ring lol it was Godwin’s family ring Athelred gave him him when his dad spoiled their name as a reminder to never forget what his father had done but he gave the ring to the man who raised him up that’s why his face looked so shocked lol he definitely didn’t care about the old man enough to have that reaction

    The more learning about the subject I do, the more I realize Edward the Confessor was really just a traitor to his own country. As was mentioned in the video, Godwin took a leading role in reducing Norman influence in England whereas Edward seemed to be opening up the door for them in every way he could

    I think The Battle Of Maldon is the real tragic loss. Had Eadric remained loyal Edmund the English would almost certainly have destroyed Cnut and his army. The line of Alfred would’ve had a much greater chance of survival as Edmund, his sons and brothers would most likely have continued to rule until the end of century at least. The Normans, for all their ambitions, probably wouldn’t have invaded if there were surging adult male members of the ancient Royal house.
