  • This is a detailed video showing exactly how to glue in the boot /trunk weatherseal on a R107 Mercedes SL using the 3M Weatherstrip adhesive. The video also covers the E6000 adhesive which is great for rectifying a less than perfect job. There is a big difference in price between manufacturers and this video deals with the low cost Uro seal - the more expensive seals are much easier to glue in, but can cost 10 times more from Mercedes.

Took me way too long to find this video - the only one that actually shows the strength of the products. Thank you.

Many of these jobs are daunting the first time you do them. I always ask myself - What is the worst than can happen? take a deep breath and go for it. It is depressing when it goes 'Pete Tong' but really satisfying when you do the job yourself. Mike

Hi Mike just checking that the taller part of the rubber seal goes on the outside lip of boot channel ( as the your video shows) it just order mercedes forum show the The taller parts of the lip goes on the inside part just purchase the m3 glue as you used is one tube enough to great video as usual thank for you all your advice

Thanks for your comment. Tall bit at the back. You should see that the shorter bit of rubber lines up exactly to the inner lip.
One tube of 3M easily enough to do boot seal....you can see how much I had left over on the door seal video I just posted. A few tips:
      1. Remember you just need a THEN primer coat on each surface...then a thicker bead on one of the surfaces once the primer coat is tacky.
      2. My advice would be to use GOOD QUALITY masking tape so that you don't get the 3M on bits on the car you don't want.
      3. Wear gloves as its quite hard getting 3M off your hands.
The cheaper (Uro) seals are MUCH harder to fit well than the more expensive premium seals. The latter are made from a foam rubber which tends to hold its shape better. If you are using the cheaper seal, you may need to use some cut off broom handles to keep it in shape while gluing....if the seal comes out the bag deformed.
My motto is always....I'm looking to improve what was there before and NOT for perfection. Perfection is what you pay mega bucks for to someone who has done this job all their life.
      Mike

Thanks for your comment. Yes - it was a little bit trickier than expected doing that rear seal but we got there in the end. I'm going to do a video on the rear antenna. There are basically two types - manual and electric - both available from Uro. I just ordered a manual one...but the electric one on my other 280sl is knackered I believe. Also got a quote in Bristol for new stereo and electric antenna which came toabout £200 from memory. How and when are you picking your car up from the SL shop? Mike

@@MikesMercsandothercars I’m not sure how or when yet. I think I’ll definitely leave it with them until it’s registered. Beyond that, I’ll probably ask them if they can deliver it. Otherwise my son and my brother in law may have to go and get it! At the moment I can’t see me getting back to the UK before October :(

My 350sl has a boot seal that has come apart with glue residue in the channel. Any advice on cleaning out the old glue without stripping the paint?

Thanks for your comment. I have an issue on the red project car where the masking tape has left glue lines on the fresh paint. What seems to work quite well is using WD40 to soften and dissolve the glue and then wiping away with a rag. I have also tried acetone but thats not 'cutting the mustard'. Let me know how you get on...and have you bought your new seal yet? Mike

Doing similar job and watching Mike’s video. I found the easiest way to strip off the old adhesive is to use Goo Gone and let it sits over night or several hours. Afterward just wipe it off with paper towels. It may takes two applications in heavily glued area like my car because the previous owner use adhesive to patch rust holes.
