This rendition of Christopher Larkin's already beautiful soundtrack is amazing. This arrangement brings a whole new sense of magic and beauty that wasn't there in the original pieces (which I found especially in Hornet, Mantis Lords, White Palace, Sealed Vessel, Radiance, and the Main Theme). The excellent transitions along with the triumphant, adventurous mood this portrayed brought a smile to my face multiple times. Well done. Well done indeed. This will definitely not be the last time I listen to this. Keep up the good work!
@@nyxshadowhawk Christopher Larkin, when composing the soundtrack, just made a lot of different types of tracks. Some only had one instrument, or focused on one. To have pieces like "Mantis Lords" focus on something other than just the Harpsichord in an orchestral score is majorly different to me.
I feel like this ost was meant to flow smoothly between songs, to be able to transition between areas and bosses in this world of Hallownest. But this beautiful orchestral suite blends them together to make a perfect song.
Very beautifully done--there is such a wide variety of time signatures and key changes throughout the Hollow Knight soundtrack that would make combining all these themes a giant headache... I can see a lot of that in the stopping and starting points between what can almost be considered different movements in your work. You did a superb job of merging and transitioning between themes that were similar, and you definitely captured the range of emotions that Hollow Knight evokes. A lot of people might criticize you for having what might be considered a lackluster ending, but those that have played the game know and can feel the emotional ties to ending on that stunning, haunting solo piano, and how it alludes back to the player's lonely journey through the Hallownest. Fantastic job, you've got a standing ovation from me~
I, as a violist, am absolutely in love with the use of the viola voice throughout this arrangement. A lot of composers would have looked straight to the cello or violin for a lot of sections, but I think the sections where the viola is a prevalent voice really give it a unique, rich sound, and I'm so, so glad to hear it. Much love for this rendition of the sounds from one of my fav games!
Beautiful! My only criticism would be with time signatures. Greenpath would have felt more natural had you kept the time signature in 6/4, at least until the key change to E major. That, or score the whole section in 3/4 and double the values. As for the 7/8 - 9/8, that would work better as a deliberate 4/4 section rather than switching back and forth. The Mantis Lords would have read easier in a fast 3/4 and would benefit from not changing to 6/8 until measure 255. The Radiance’s 12/8 section seems more suited to a 3/4 section followed by a 4/4. Just my two cents. Incredible work, regardless! And more solo viola is always appreciated. ;)
Thank you very much for the comment. In this soundtrack there are many cross-rhythmic effects which makes it very interesting. Greenpath the beat is in dotted half note (in the score it specifies), the bass notes in the harp mark the beat of 3 in 3 and the melody is binary, so it could perfectly be in 6/4. But I think the natural tempo is 6/8, and I simply double the tempo to 12/8 so that the cross-rhythmic can be more easily subdivided and link it better with City of tears. Dung Defender is a clear example of cross-rhythmic, in this case it would be an 8/4 for the phrasing or a 4/4 with beat=78 but would be many sixteenths. But if you look at the accent it indicates very well the beat 2+2+3 and 2+2+3+2. The Mantis Lords look well where the accent is, it is totally binary. 6/8 is an additional bar, you can feel it in the phrase. Radiance another example of cross-rhythmic melody is binary and ternary accompaniment, this causes instability to the melody and cool a lot. The choir clearly marks the beat. Then you could change it to 4/4, but it's not necessary, even on 12/8 you could have started beats before. Thanks for feedback
VGOScore I suppose that’s a fair point. With all due respect, the cross rhythms would exist regardless of the time signature, so I suppose it doesn’t matter if it’s 3/4 or 6/8, in a way. I suppose I was looking at it from the perspective as a performer and also a conductor and where the beat is more naturally felt, at least to me. Greenpath is pretty difficult to conduct in 12/8, to be honest and the hemiola is actually created by the dotted quarter note, meaning the time signature is not defined by it. The 7/8 + 9/8 I guess makes sense but not when the melody comes in. The melody is very clearly defined in a 4/4, or 4/2, in this case if you left the same values. The sixteenth note runs in the violins make this especially clear, as well. The Mantis Lords is actually very much defined in 3/4 by the way you wrote it. The accents are placed on up beats if it were in 6/8 but would be on down beats in 3/4. And this is definitely one that I feel strongly from a player perspective when I take a look at the string parts. For The Radiance, the bass line clearly marks that this should probably be in a simple meter and not a complex, as it is defined by the quarter note, not a dotted quarter note. And again, running sixteenth notes make 3/4 the much more typical time signature. Sorry! I really enjoy transcribing for string orchestra/quartet and rhythm and time signatures are something that I really take into consideration when doing so, so I just wanted to share my thoughts.
@@NintendoViola Sometimes it can be very subjective about writing compound rhythms, I always try to detect where the accents and phrases are. Maybe the composer comes and tells us that we were wrong lol

I need a full version of Hornet’s theme from this man.
absolutely masterpiece
Man the radiance gave me chills
I never really appreciated how well organized all of this is, until I learned to read music like it's amazing that this is for an indie game that game from nowhere and has some amazing and beautiful orchestral music. Like kudos to Team Cherry for this and we yet have Silksong to look forward to as well.
This is amazing
5:17 I-I-I I have no words. ITS JUST BEAUTIFUL.
the perfect combination of a perfect composer and a perfect orchestral suite
The violin has a nice tone. But getting to hear that viola solo was so refreshing and beautiful, the viola can be amazing when it gets to shine
Can't believe I sat down and watched this entire thing start to finish. This is SUCH a masterpiece!!
back for more!
Who's down to do a virtual quarantine orchestra recording of this?!
This game deserved every single award for an indie game in 2017. The game is so amazing I would say it's at least a 10/10
HOLY CRAP THIS IS EPIC
The transition from Dung Defender to Hornet to Mantis Lords works so well, and the buildup on Sealed Vessel is incredible!
The transition from White Palace into Soul Master is godly
I DID NOT EXPECT YOU TO DO THIS. BUT THIS IS BEAUTIFUL. THANK YOU!
Dang, Sealed Vessel hits like a truck and I love it
This is the best most gorgeous compilation of hollow knight songs ive ever heard ever. This is going on my playlist for sure!
This is the best soundtrack in videogames history and nobody can change my mind
You should totally make and orchestration version of the godmaster version of the songs.if I'm not asking a lot tho
That transition from dung defender to hornet was awesome
Absolute godlike transition between Dung Defender and Hornet
