What an amazing story. I was stuck in the USA in Atlantic City after leaving New York City at 7:30am. I couldn't get through to my family. Those phone calls would have meant so much to those families!

I was born and raised in Toronto, I’ve never even heard of a gander, until 911, after that, I was going to go visit, to see if it was true, especially because I’m gay, so my husband of 32 years and I hopped on a plane and flew there…. I don’t know where to begin, it was beyond true, these people are absolute angels, every single person we met there, thousands of them. We made a point so people would know we were a couple, just to see their reaction, nobody batted an eye. We had made hotel reservations, I had booked a few trips/excursions to visit various areas, but it wasn’t necessary. As soon as we got off the plane, everyone treated us like we were royalty, and we ended up staying at a complete strangers house, where we stayed for a whole week. They absolutely refused to let us pay for anything, they took us on a tour of the entire area, and actually took a week off work so they could show us around. Every person we came in contact with were like that. It was almost like being in a fairytale, I just stood there in such disbelief that there could be so many wonderful people in this world, especially when you come from a big city like Toronto, where nobody talks to anybody. By the end of that one week, we both had tears in our eyes leaving these people to go back home, but we made friends for life. That was over 10 years ago, since then they have come here and stayed with us, and we’ve been back there at least a dozen times. I never expected to not just make friends, but to have a new family members, but that’s exactly what happened. These stories are not exaggerating at all, they are actually 100% true in every detail, and it makes me so proud that these people are part of my country. But, I know for a fact that the United States would do the exact same thing for us, because we’ve travelled all over the world over the past 32 years, and have found people in the United States just as kind. It’s just a shame that it takes such a tragedy to bring people together, when all it takes is a vacation, I don’t think if 9/11 happened, anything would’ve been different on our vacation, these people are just generally loving, trusting, caring, and just about the kindest people you could ever meet. I can’t say enough good things about them, other than they are my family, I love them dearly, and if ever you get the chance to go, do it, I promise you you won’t regret it. It might just look like some small hicktown, but nothing could be further from the truth.
