Go with the Duracell. I want reliability in my key fob and don’t want to be wrecking it taking it apart constantly changing out the cheap battery after all it’s worth about $280 to replace.
Key fobs need to become rechargeable or easier to replace batteries. I have to change batteries (I mostly use Duracell) every 2-3 months and it's a real puzzle to do it too.
One thing that Is really important about button cell batteries, never handle them with your bare hands. Your fingerprints leave behind oils and acids which attack the metal surface and create resistance. The small button cells are very sensitive to this, so always handle them with clean cotton gloves or a clean tissue. If you touch them with bare skin clean them off with alcohol. This advice applies to watch batteries also. I learned this reading the training materials from Renata, a battery watch maker, this advice is right out of their training materials on changing watch batteries. I worked in the jewelry business and we sold a lot of watches and replaced a lot of batteries, after watching a lot of store employees putting their fingerprints all over watch batteries I never let anyone change my watch batteries but me, believe me, it DOES make a big difference.
@@electronicsNmore There are a lot of watch batteries and car remote batteries that get replaced when all they needed was their contacts and battery cleaned off. A neighbor thought his car remote battery was shot, it didn't unlock his doors anymore, I took it and cleaned the battery surface and contacts with rubbing alcohol, that battery lasted another 2 years. It happens all the time.
Another excellent test/evaluation. Glad to see the note about watching the ads. It is a way to help the channel if one is tapped out with Patreon, etc. RUclips is cagey about what counts as an ad “view”, but I have seen a couple of sources that say 30 seconds of an that is that length or longer counts. (Some of them are minutes long, so that is important. My compromise is the 30 second rule on the first ad, usually skip the second unless it is short. There is a price to be paid: in my case a seemingly endless sequence of ads for really stupid arcade phone games. But “free” content needs to be paid for somehow.
It would be interesting to know if these results trend over time. When were the batteries manufactured? How long do they sit on shelves? How much does that affect the stats? Between you and Project Farm, I've learned a boatload of stuff. Thank you both! (I include PF because of his comment)
PF is great, he's a friend. How these CR2032's perform with a very small current drain over a long time, could be different. I may have to revisit this test at a later date for very low power device use. The batteries were all made at the end of 2019. They have a very long shelf life under the right temp. Thanks for watching Karl, and please share the video link. It helps makes all the time I put into making these videos, worthwhile.
@@electronicsNmore I share with my kids. I consider it my job, even in my 60s with 19 grandkids, to continue to teach... Being a parent never ends. This video is even nicer since Harbor Freight just built a new store 2 miles from home. The closest one before is 13 miles away...
My first time coming across your channel. I really enjoyed the video. I liked how unbiased your presentation was and I really felt like you were giving your true opinion and weren't shilling for any one brand. You earned like, sub I clicked the bell as well. I used your amazon link to buy the tester for myself. I have a couple of red dot sights that have ridiculous on hours with 50,000 hours plus on a single cr2032 but since they are used for life and liberty, I don't trust leaving a battery on that long, so I change it every 6 months. I want to leave them on a little longer to produce less waste. Thanks again for the awesome video.

Thanks, these cells are becoming widely used in many devices now so I always keep some on hand. I always cringe a bit when it comes to making a purchase because you never know how fresh these cells are.
I probably use over 100 of them a year but it's mostly for stuff from the '80s and '90s... replacing SRAM batteries in old game cartridges and memory paks/memory cards, replacing RTC batteries in Game Boy games and game consoles, converting from tabbed ML2032 rechargeables to socketed CR2032 disposables, etc. Only occasionally do I need them for some modern remote or key fob, so I definitely don't think of them as "becoming" widely used as opposed to been widely used for decades in devices where they were expected to outlast the useful life of the product. ;)
@@emmettturner9452 so instead of letting the console recharge the ML2032, you decided to replace the battery with a normal CR2032? seems like a downgrade to me
@@RideRedRacer You might think that, but the few dedicated enough to still play Dreamcast disconnect it between sessions and often don’t play enough to keep it charged. Every time they break it out they find it lost the time, language settings, etc preventing them from jumping straight into the game. Also, the rechargeable has typically gone bad from too many short cycles or disuse. Similarly I had to replace the rechargeable clock battery inside a “ThinkWare” dashcam because it would lose the date and time then keep recording over the same “January 1, 1970” footage over and over again… causing me to lose footage of a thief. It does this even though it sets the time and date from GPS every drive and has two other power sources to maintain the time while parked (car power + Li-Ion). I found reports of that problem as soon as 18 months after the unit was made in 2016. They literally would’ve been better off with a non-rechargeable when they wear out that quick and undermine the entire purpose of the device! I found the component was also used in a Seiko watch where I’m sure it lasts much longer.
Thanks for the review - I was trying to decide between Amazon brand vs Duracell for vehicle key fobs and was able to pick up the Duracell for $1.18 each on sale!

Lok Tom Because quarters are bimetal, the static electricity produced from brushing the carpet is stored like a capacitor between the layers of the metal. Conveniently, this produces almost exactly 3 volts. Amperage may very. If it doesn't work the first time, you may need a different quarter. Alternatively, you can raise the energy potential by running the quarter under hot water to allow the electrons to flow better.
Great video. However, we have no way of knowing the source of harbor freight batteries. They could be different on a weekly basis. You may have gotten a good one. Do we know the consistency of their products? And we know that their AA and AAA batteries are very poor.
True. They can change suppliers at any time. Thanks for watching! Be sure to watch my latest battery testing video below, which shows AAA Alkaline tests. Be sure to share. ruclips.net/video/cVTIC9cQI2Q/видео.html
Surprising results! No wonder the Energizer in my key fob keeps dying so often. But I wonder if the test results and rankings hold true for different discharge rates (applied load).
@@electronicsNmore You're probably right, but if nothing else, your video did demonstrate that one's intuition of how things will work is not always correct. I don't know if would have much impact on the performance of the devices using the battery, but it would be interesting to see a curve illustrating the rate of the voltage drop off. Anyway, thanks for the video, it was interesting.

Bought some Energizers off of eBay at a very low price. Guess I got what I paid for lol! Thanks for this comparison. 2032s are normally used in devices that run for months or shut themselves down automatically, so it would be hard to tell if there were significant differences under normal use. BTW, nice trick using magnets to attach your test leads!
I think Harbor Freight underrated their battery because they are a low turnover item that sits on a shelf for ages before being sold. I would like to see you repeat the test and take the average for 3 cells of each brand and don't purchase two of any given source from the same store. That might prove difficult for Amazon and Harbor Freight so purchase them online at least 2 weeks apart and chances are you will get calls from different lots.
Now I'm curious about standard batteries like AA's, Harbor Freight has a whole new line of Thunderbolt batteries that are supposed to be pretty comparable to the name brands.
Thanks for the efforts and posting this video. It would be nice to hear from some quality control and statistics gurus on how much sampling would be needed and how often to produce some comfort.
I thought mine could've been bad, so I bought another pack at my local supermarket, and the tests were almost identical. They may do well for very low current loads over time, but not for powering LED lights, etc. Thanks for watching!
For the last couple of years Energizer stuff has really gone down in quality. They used to be my go to for rechargeable AA and AAA. When I switched to Harbor Freight's rechargeables I started getting 2-4 times more use between charges.

Excellent test protocol. Well done. However, in future content please ensure all graphs have a zero reference on that axis. Classic deception method used by marketing. Some of your graphs were from zero, some were not. Exaggerating differences in that particular metric. Still, though, awesome content.
Duracells are widely available. I’d have to spend $5 in gas and an half an hour of time getting the harbor freight batteries when I could just grab a 2 pack of Duracells basically anywhere while I’m shopping.
Thorough testing! I usually buy CR2032s and others from AliExpress. They will cost less than $0.20 a piece including shipping. Panasonic, Sony or Chinese. I haven’t tested them (just used them) and haven’t noticed any difference compared to ones I buy in a shop in here in Europe. Last 2 years AliExpress doesn’t allow counterfeit parts anymore so there’s a good chance (but not 100%) that you get genuine batteries.

Great idea and nice video! The fact that you didn't achieve stated capacity(or even half) means that you were probably testing above typical current draws. It's nice to compare actual performance w their specs, but you can't do this w how you ran the test. I suppose it depends on the load for your particular application.

Go with the Duracell. I want reliability in my key fob and don’t want to be wrecking it taking it apart constantly changing out the cheap battery after all it’s worth about $280 to replace.
I like Duracell for CR2032's, but not for AA/AAA, they leak too much.
Key fobs need to become rechargeable or easier to replace batteries. I have to change batteries (I mostly use Duracell) every 2-3 months and it's a real puzzle to do it too.
God bless you sir. These are the videos that matter!
That's true, but luckily I've never experienced any problems, and I live in humid South Florida. Thanks for watching!
Huge advice.. DIY has best results
Thanks bro

I share with my kids. I consider it my job, even in my 60s with 19 grandkids, to continue to teach... Being a parent never ends.
This video is even nicer since Harbor Freight just built a new store 2 miles from home. The closest one before is 13 miles away...
Wow, your kids were busy. :-)
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for your support. Be sure to watch my Alkaline AAA testing video for (8) brands, and my 9V alkaline battery testing video from 2 days ago. Posting links to my videos on social networking sites would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
Thanks, these cells are becoming widely used in many devices now so I always keep some on hand. I always cringe a bit when it comes to making a purchase because you never know how fresh these cells are.
Thanks for watching Craig!
@@RideRedRacer The CR2032 batteries will last several years while the rechargeable typically only lasts days with the power off/disconnected.
Thanks for the review - I was trying to decide between Amazon brand vs Duracell for vehicle key fobs and was able to pick up the Duracell for $1.18 each on sale!
Those magnets was a pretty good idea! Good thinking.
The magnets isn't that great idea. It more resistance to the test.
Exactly the kind of testing i was looking for. I have gotten a lot out of Harbor Freight batteries in my key fob for my dodge charger. Time to get some for my nissan

I just rub a quarter against the carpet for a few minutes and BAM good to go!
😂 Thanks for watching!
What kind of science was that ?
Lok Tom Because quarters are bimetal, the static electricity produced from brushing the carpet is stored like a capacitor between the layers of the metal. Conveniently, this produces almost exactly 3 volts. Amperage may very.
If it doesn't work the first time, you may need a different quarter. Alternatively, you can raise the energy potential by running the quarter under hot water to allow the electrons to flow better.

Thank you. I really appreciate your approach. Easy to understand.

Awesome review and testing process! This was very helpful. Thx Sir!
Surprising results! No wonder the Energizer in my key fob keeps dying so often. But I wonder if the test results and rankings hold true for different discharge rates (applied load).
I'd expect the ranking to be the same, but much longer run times.

I was so surprised! 😳 Now I'm going to Harbor Freight!! 😀
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Energizers from ebay at a very low price? They are probably counterfeits. With luck they will be even better than the real ones :D

But do we know if harbor freight quality control is solid? And do we know if they change sources of their batteries?
I think Harbor Freight underrated their battery because they are a low turnover item that sits on a shelf for ages before being sold. I would like to see you repeat the test and take the average for 3 cells of each brand and don't purchase two of any given source from the same store. That might prove difficult for Amazon and Harbor Freight so purchase them online at least 2 weeks apart and chances are you will get calls from different lots.
This is Fantastic!
Thanks for this. Be interesting to see how each battery performs in low temperatures. I find exposure to low temp can kill these cells very quickly.
Colder temp reduce capacity, and warmer temps increase. Thanks for watching!
Yes, I know - but do the different brands react differently? Is one better than the others at dealing with cold temps?

I have had problems with conterfeit Enegizer cells, espically when buying from Amazon.

I actually have good luck with the dollar tree “sunbeam” 2032’s
I've used them, unfortunately all the stores in my area were sold out.
The Sunbeams are Alkaline versus Lithium.
They are the worst unreliable battery around. Pure garbage.

Thank you so much for this video! Your video is such a breath of fresh air because you have sound testing methodology and explain all of your tests, whereas every other source on the internet I've encountered was just a list with generic marketing terms. Anyway, this video is absolutely invaluable for making decisions for 2032-powered EL Wire projects! I'm making some wearable EL Wire costume pieces and knowing how the coin cells perform under a much larger load (1.5 watts per meter of wire) than the manufacturer's testing is a primary concern.
