I lucked out. The Baton Rouge 8 string ukulele arrived from Germany today. It’s everything you reviewed it to be. The setup is perfect and I have a delightful new instrument. Thank you for your kind advice. Mike
I’ve bought one today, then I saw your review. It’s a fantastic instrument, at a very reasonable price point. I couldn’t agree more. It plays beautifully and very easily. My local music shop had several brand varieties in stock but the BR felt like the best.
There are no hard and fast rules really, other than the four 'pairs' are designed to be tuned to the same note (though not the same octave necessarily). The most common is to tune high G, low G, high C, low C, and the E and A tuned in unison to regular uke tuning.
It's a bit closer to a Renaissance guitar than a single-course ukulele. Howerev, in most cases, Renaissance guitars have a single first course while all others are double courses, using only 7 strings in that instance, though some can have 8 and a double on the first course.
I'm stunned! Both about the ukulele and your fantastic presentation. This vid made me want an 8-stringer. Wether this come true or not, the future will tell.
Thanks for the good review. I'm looking at getting an 8 string ukulele or a renaissance guitar so this review was very helpful. They are very similar since the ukulele is a descendant of the renaissance guitar. The renaissance guitar is tuned Gg, BB, ee, a.
Hi Barry, I'v now got one of these in following your review and love it. However it wont fit either of my tenor gig bags so have bought a baritone which seems more suited to the extra lenght of the headstock.
Kind of works like a Mandolin - yes it doubles up the sound, and despite precise tuning the strings are always very very slightly apart - so you get a shimmer. Really nice sound. Doesn't suit every style of music though.
OMG It sounds like an amplified uke even if it's not... I wanna have one. But here's the thing, I don't think this uke will work for singers. Because Idk....But let's see... I'll watch more reviews...

Based on your review I just ordered one of these. It is sold by Thomman company in Europe. I’ve never ordered from overseas and I’m nervous as heck. I tried a similarly priced Oscar Schmidt 8 string ukulele. It was nice in appearance and sound but the action was terrible so back it went. You did not comment on the Baton Rouge action but neither did you complain about it. I hope it works out. With your fine review I have high hopes. Mike in Minnesota
Action on mine that I got direct from Baton Rouge was perfect as they are set up by their distributor. I’d never recommend Thomann for ukes, and not sure what channels they are getting these from. I know the UK distributor well and he sets them all up before sale
I think these are one of the best value laminate ukes you can buy in standard stringing. The 8 string takes them up a notch. I think these are on a par with 8 strings that cost 2-3 times as much.

I'm trying to find a open slot tuner like this one but with only 4 strings but with this price range and this quality of this uke . Can I take off 4 strings and use this one as a 4 string ? Will the spacing of just 4 string work out ? If so what strings should be removed to get equal spacing ? If you know of a 4 string with the open slot tuning head that is as good as this one at this price range will you put a link or the name of it .
I don't know a model that gives you what you want - you could take the strings off, but really you would need to swap the nut for a four string version or they will be a bit one sided. Could work i guess
I am trying to decide whether to get this one or the 6 string version. I have carpal tunnel and sometimes barring is tough for me. Do more strings mean more pressure to bar? If so, do you think there is a lot of difference between the 6 and the 8? Sadly my Uke store is shut now (cleckheaton) and I can't try one in person. Thanks for your reviews! alice
They do mean a bit more effort, yes. I don’t think it’s hugely different if they are set up well, but your mileage may vary.
