Hello Ernie. Interesting video. It's amazing that someone has come up with a new concept in outdoor stoves. Personally, I believe that all your watchers owe you a big thank you for spending your time and money on the different products that are out there. It helps us make a more informed decision.
Maybe you didn't read all the directions Ernie. I've had this great little stove for a year. The metal pot dupport also holds the stove in a collapsed condition. I have the bigger stove also the Picogrill 239. Great stove, super light weight. Glad you got around to reviewing this stove.
I have a PicoGrill 85. After sanding the edges, it's excellent. Light weight, folds flat, easy to use. I paid $30 for it on Amazon, which seems fair. Current price is double that, and maybe not so great compared to Lixada or maybe FireBox. The larger PicoGrills appear to be unique in their size and weight classes. Still expensive, but possibly worth it for a somewhat packable, family-size, hibachi.
Simplicity is the key with this product. Usually biofuel stoves have several parts that need assembly. I would buy this if I need this type of stove hands down!
Great video. This stove would make a perfect back up to a gas stove in case it doesn’t work. It’s small and light and cold slide into any rucksack or bag. Thanks for showing it to us.
Thanks Dr. Ernie the review. I have this stove and love it. It is so light weight that I always bring it and it is not bulky at all. Just slides into an inside panel of my pack and is there ready to use. No fiddling around to set it up.
I agree. I compare stoves against my titanium Firebox Nano and Freestyle stoves, which are just about perfect for debris stoves. I like other debris stoves and enjoy playing with them in my yard, but on the trail, the Firebox stoves just cast a long shadow.
I am that die hard Firebox stove guy Ernie. I have taken my Firebox gear literally all over North and South America. I am sure this one is okay… but I own and love my Firebox stove so I am sticking to it. Great video and thanks for sharing
I carry this for hikes, due to featherweight. I carry Firebox for canoe/truck camping where heft is not an issue. Arguably, the Pico is actually easier to tend due to larger feed slots, resulting in less wood processing overall. It’s rock solid on a flat surface. Not flimsy at all. I’ve cooked an iron skillet on it, (tho’ that defeats the whole ultralight thing). Burn efficiency is equal in my opinion. Firebox wins on adapting to alcohol burner. The Pico rests the burner too deep, though creative use of tent pegs and a cup smaller diameter than top of stove can get it 1.5” from flame with some McGuyevering. Personally, you can’t go wrong with this, particularly if weight matters to you.
I’ve owned this for 4 years now - it is excellent. It is a really innovative design and super efficient and effective. it was also extensively reviewed by mark young several years ago. Viewers beware - there are several unscrupulous companies making copies and selling them as authentic picogrill, on eBay and Amazon. They even copy the logo on the nylon case and photocopy the instructions. Really bad. One of the most obvious tells is whether the stove has the picogrill logo cut into the stove itself (cools don’t) If in doubt buy from the website direct. If the picogrill you see is much cheaper it’s probably a rip off. Also - a hint - after a coupla uses the stove melds into the cylinder shape and you don’t need the cross bar. It still folds flat. You can use a Ti stake or bike spoke for a pot stand It’s not wobbly nor is it fragile. I’ve found mine with constant use is quite robust. You just don’t need a heavy grade Ti. I have the fireboxes but they are too heavy.
I have had one of these since they first came to the states. They are a little pricy. In my opinion this cool stove is good for a survival kit or a minimalist packing or just for low weight with the idea of "what if" when I go out. I generally use smaller pots when I go out solo and it isn't that useful. I am generally going out tinkering and planning on making lunch and I am not as concerned about the weight and I prefer something more substantial and comortable such as my diy ikea stove that works well with my trangia too. I do like using the Pico with my alcohol stove as well, though,, if I want to steep a pot of hemlock tea. Since I have one and do like it I have been pondering if the Pico could serve in some fashion as part of a car heater/emergency stove maybe with sterno.
I’ve had one for a couple years. Along with the larger 239. The 85 puts out as much heat as a G2 firebox and weighs less than a titanium nano. The 239 is like a small fire pit that weighs less than half of a titanium G2.
Twig stoves There are a lot of good choices. Two categories are gasifier and non gasifier. Gasifiers impress me as cute, but not that much of a benefit for the cost and weight. Others “like them”, and that is fine. but I see only few of them used repeatedly. Non gasifier twig stoves can be simpler, lighter, and maybe cheaper. The Pico price on 26 Jan 24 was $59. This stove, like all others, is a combination chimney and pot stand. Similar to a Littlbug stove, it joins on the perimeter, and compresses into it’s whole. Twig stoves can be a base stove, or a standby stove. Their bulk, weight, and cost are so minute that carrying one is little to no difficulty. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying
You can run the bar through bottom to other side and that keeps it from having any recoil in the bag.I have had mine for prob a couple yrs and it works great. There is a bigger version also.
I've had one of these for a couple of years. There is a way to thread the pot support through the openings of the flattened stove so that it doesn't try to pop open while in the case. It's a great little stove, but a bit more fiddly than the 5 inch Firebox.
Thanks for the review. Really interesting but like yourself I own both versions of the Firebox and use them. This stove does have an appeal as well, especially the lightweight and small size. I may check it out at some point. Thanks again.
I've had one of these for a couple of years and while it is light, convenient and works well, it is fragile. Mine has rusted through on one of the connecting tabs. It still works but I'm waiting for it to fail at some point soon. And it is expensive in the context of this lack of longevity. A titanium model would be more durable and could come in at a comparable price, given the simplicity of the design/manufacture. All the best from the UK, Andy
It appears that the function of the wire bar is to prevent the stove from collapsing in the narrow direction, by preventing expansion the long direction. In order to provide a stable base for a smaller pot, they should notch the sheet and provide additional wires for placing in an X configuration. The wires could have small U bends, to clear the other wires, at wire intersections.
Looks cool. In your video I thought you said it cost 25.99, however it seems the price is 2x that much. I own too many wood stoves already. I will continue to using my Firebox.
I've just received it today along with the x-boil UL and it really looks great. Not sure that it's a better alternative but for a similar weight, it seems that you can make a much bigger fire in the x-Fire 14 compared to the one in the video. The it's easier to assemble the Picogrill though.
@@mrtru1te the x-fire design wise has much more versatility. Like you can not only put a pot on top but with the pegs also place it lower which is great if you are using it with an alcohol stove since its then much better wind protected. Its too many things to right now out into a comment. I also got the picogrill. And yes you can make a bigger fire.
The 'tent peg' that sits over the top looks like an afterthought. From your video, it looks like it sits higher than the rest of the stove. Surely this means whatever pot is placed on top balances on this bar and one side of the stove, not on both sides of the stove at the same time? Granted, it's a small amount of instability, but with a bit more thought, they could have made it so all pots balance evenly on top of the stove. They seem to have settled on a poor solution to an easily remedied problem.
It's cute..but your saying it's "tippy" feeling is worrisome. I've already sustained 2nd degree burns on foot and entire leg do to a tippy stove 2 years ago.
I love the honesty of your reviews ,and sincerely appreciate your commitment to this niche. If you sharing sometimes honest means you don't share something for weeks or (dear lord)months... I We're here for it.😊 Keep having fun, keep doing you, it's fantastic 🫡
Good god man you should let us know ahead of time the items you will review. Its gone up in price to $59 since your review. Over doubling in price? What a sketchy opportunistic company. Why would we give then our money?
Picogrill has been manufacturing and selling these stoves for over 10 years, until recently only online in Europe and Japan. Last year, it seems some (pretty good) imitations (made in China) were sold in Amazon at a very cheap price , unauthorized , by a "sketchy" Amazon seller. . This was finally stopped by Picogrill and now they have their own set up on Amazon where they sell the Swiss made stoves in North America at a price similar to their European price. Note that their European price has not changed drastically over the years although exchange rates have varied at times. And their prices certainly look comparable to the Firebox.
@@Odian2 There is a good chance that that is the case. Picogrill do not sell their stove for 25.99 and never have. for more info , you may want to check out Mark Young's info ruclips.net/video/t4o3eixzEHU/видео.html
Everyone always run these little machines on 220 for product placement. Of coarse its going to work on 220. But a typical hobbyist/diyer may not have access to 220. Would like to see it on 110, and yes i know the capacity is less
I've owned this stove for a while and it cooked my food on a 400km walk across northern Sweden at the end of 2022. Great piece of kit...

I agree. This is great and has been around for several years with little recognition. I don't know why as it seems to be one of the very best designs.

I love my Firebox too, I have 3 but I have a stove addiction like Ernie thus I’ve had this one too for sometime. It is in my car all the time.
I like it, the space and weight is ideal for walking.

I really dig the look of this stove. Flat pack but still super light man that's neat!
A pure survival stove that could have saved many lives. Thanks for your humble report.

Sticking with my Firebox arsenal of stoves. When you have the best, forget the rest.

Stay with the nano!
It will be a good number of years before anything gets close to the nano...if ever!
You can also use a small bushcraft grill top and cook burgers etc and will make small diameter pots much more stable

very small pots can sit closer to the long ends without falling.
I would think using a small round file that two grooves could be made to make the cross piece level with the top.
Grooves are already there. Only so many details in a video Ernie is great, but missed that minor point
Congratulations of reaching 70K subs, well done.
Good backup to my Ohuhu with the fold flat style

Not wobbly at all on flat surface with crossbar slotted in
Thanks as always
Good price!
Burn bans are always a bummer. How about the new and improved Uberleben stoker flat pack stove. How does it compare to the original.
X-fire 14 UL is a better alternative to this. You need to check it out

So which firebox stove you like the best? Keep tossing between the original 5 inch and the new 6 sided one.
A similar piece like the bottom at the top would make for a better pot stabilizer.

There’s a slot. It rests flat with top of stove. Not an issue
Nice job on the review,. I am also someone who always uses creamer in his coffee, what was that Latte creamer that you used this time?
Good review thanks for sharing YAH bless !
Hello Ernie, did you get your stove on the US Amazon or another seller overseas?
I still like the nano titanium better. Did you get the box of MREs I sent to you office??
It's cute..but your saying it's "tippy" feeling is worrisome. I've already sustained 2nd degree burns on foot and entire leg do to a tippy stove 2 years ago.
should be titanium for this price
Cost is now $59.00.
Its a bit small 😅
Then get the 239
It seemed as if it wasted a lot of uncontained heat. Too much fire outside of the stove.
25 Dollars??? In Germany ist 70euros 😮 thats a rippoff how tf Can a Swiss producer sell overseas for 25 and the country right next to it 70 🤨
