    I think a more useful criterion for backpacking is "how much alcohol was used up in getting the water to a boil" (how efficient is it)? The time is less important: you will normally be doing something with that time.

    Your first 5 seconds says it all. I bought the Redcamp over a Trangia simply to get the stand. From there, I took a drill with a 1/16" bit and opened up the little holes on the Redcamp burner so that all the stove holes would be the same size, just like the Trangia. Took 2 minutes to do, and by all measures my now "modded" redcamp burner performs just like the Trangia, including time to bloom, overall fuel consumption, etc.

    • @1Splat
      @1Splat 2 года назад +3

      I did the same. My results are the same. Boil time thru testing remains +/-1 or 2 seconds, as well as burn length, etc. I now recommend the Redcamp to my friends, and that they drill out the holes to match but they really don't need to. So far, we're all quite happy with the Redcamp.

      I used a set of torch tip cleaners ( micro files essentially) to clean out all of the vapor ports and it’s a huge improvement. I have two and will open up the small ports to match the bigger ports.

      Did drilling stove holes help a lot?

    • @edgarguzman6755
      @edgarguzman6755 4 месяца назад

      @@Spacemonkeymojoin my opinion, yes. I have both the Trangia and this Redcamp and before drilling the holes I had noticed the Redcamp would have a longer burn time on a milliliter-to-milliliter comparison. The however, the price you pay for that is lower BTU output. I noticed it most when cooking food...it seemed to take much longer to do with the Redcamp before I drilled the smaller holes to match the bigger ones.
      I guess an advantage to leaving the redcamp as is, is that you have better control for lower temp simmering compared to a Trangia. So if you wanted one of each, Trangia would be higher output and shorter burn time, and Redcamp lower BTU and longer burn time.

      @@edgarguzman6755 Hmm I see, fair enough. Thanks for the detailed reply! The Redcamp looks interesting, there's a $18 AUD knockoff on Amazon but I wish the stand was a bit taller. I read in a comment in another video that Trangias are most efficient when the put is one inch above the burner but it seems like it's a bit close on this stove.

    Ok...I just bought this RedCamp stove. Did some testing. The fastest way to boil water is to set the stand on the burner like he does at 3:05. In that configuration it will boil 2 cups of water in 7 minutes. I actually cooked my dinner on it tonight. I found that the best configuration for cooking is to pass the stove past the "fingers" so that it sits on the table/bottom of the stand. Gives you that perfect inch space.
    The RedCamp absolutely takes longer to come to temp and bloom. But...even with that longer bloom time, it still burns about 4 minutes longer than the Trangia with 1 ounce of Heet. I do have a Trangia and did the same tests with it. The Trangia was able to boil 2 cups of water in 6 minutes using this stand like he shows at 3:05. This is a great stove. I would recommend buying one.

    I used one this week on a camping trip. It must be protected by a windscreen, but worked surprisingly well. Of course, the temperature was in the 70s. In cold weather, I use a Svea 123r. I do like the weight of the Redcamp. I've been recovering from Chemotherapy, so I need a pack that's as light as possible.

    VIDEO IDEA!
    So I have the exact same redcamp setup but I recently found out that the stand almost perfectly fits the bottom of my JetBoil Flash. So as such I was quick to try it out, but then I realized the trangia style stove that comes with it has too wide of a jet (Singed my jetboil cozy a bit), so I made my own little stove out of a espresso can (I think you own a very similar stove). Works like a charm!! So now I have the option to run my Jetboil on alcohol or gas depending on what fuel I can find! (I'm stationed in Germany so it's a pain finding an outdoor store or getting flammable stuff shipped to me on base. Recently on a trip to the alps I even had to use hand sanitizer.)
    Anyways, I think dual fuel jetboil video would do well! Thanks man I really enjoy your channel!

    Got one of these. I like that the stand only has three legs as opposed to four like my other Trangia holders (no more wobbly pots). But I did have to get out the pliers and adjust the tabs to make the burner fit snugly. Also really like that little handle on the snuffer ring. Keeps your fingers out of the fire when you’re putting out the stove.

    I'd like to see a side by side comparison with a modified Redcap and the Trangia. The mod is as follows: enlarge the small holes to be the same size as the larger holes, using a pin vise and numbered drills, then run the test again. Also, measure the hole size of the Trangia and modifed Redcap using a pin vise and numbered drill bits as a "Go/ No" guage. I'm pretty sure that the difference in boil time is due to a larger total hole area in the Trangia. This allows more vapour to be fed into the flame. Flame burns hotter, boil time shorter. Would be interesting to see this.

Not everyone is living the Nomadic life as a choice and giving us options and skills gives us a feeling of control in our lives. Also we may end up enjoying camping etc in our lives. Many of us an keep emergency items on hand in case of getting stuck while using our vehicles.

      Just did this myself - short answer is that drilling the little holes out to match the big holes makes it perform exactly like the Trangia. It took a 1/16 inch drill bit (and two minutes of total drill time) to get the little holes to match the bigger ones. Totally worth it to have done it. I also learned that the stand sitting on top of the burner yields the fastest boil time and overall hottest flame. Putting the burner inside the stand puts the burner too close to any pot and diminishes the flame intensity

    I have the exact same one. I found if you place the burner through the hole in the bottom or the stand on top of the stove, it places the focal point of the flame at the bottom of the pot. It's a little shaky but it does give the best heat. Redcamp also has a folding, accordion-style, aluminum windscreen. Really sets up the whole thing. just a side note when the thing is really rocking my simmer ring will not put the fire out.

    As Oscar Wild said. “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.”
    Trangia should be flattered. Trangia has proved it's self for years and years , one reason why everyone is copying it in some fashion. The Trangia semi copy I like is the Titanium Evernew burner. You can set the pot directly on the burner and still have heat from the second set of burner holes. Even use it as a simmering item. Additional benefits are the rapid cooling after using it , piratically indestructible and really light weight.

    A suggestion -
    Try using a new 1 gal paint can as a wind screen.
    Make some holes in the top (side) and the bottom (side) like a hobo can. Shouldn't need more than say 3-4 on top and bottom of the sides of the can for combustion air.
    Place the nano with triangia inside it.
    Light it.
    See how long to boil water and how long the fuel lasts.
    Paint can should block most of the wind and even allow for a skillet to be used.
    Paint can can be modified with say wire from a coat hanger to allow for smaller containers.
    When using smaller containers this way, it would seem more heat is transferred to the cooking vessel instead of the wind cooling the cooking vessel.
    This *may* speed up the preheating of the triangia due to less heat loss.
    When finished, paint can can hold the nano, triangia, and other things plus you get the nice lid to hold it all in.
    Of course you have to burn out the coating in the paint can before cooking anything.
    If worried about the paint can, get a stainless steel stock pot.
    Let me know if you try this please.

    I have had the Alocs version of this for several years. I believe they would all work about the same if fuel capacity is also the same. The major problem for this is wind. The stand does nothing to block the wind which is imperative to efficiency of this stove. Of course we can always use aluminum foil or a commercial wind block . What would really be nice is to have a wind block that is round like the stand and rotate around the stand to offer up more or less of the air intake through the cut outs in the stand. All one piece construction would be nice, too. I'll give you that as a challenge. I'm thinking hob jobbed a small tin can that will nest the pot stand and just spin it around the stand to the best wind deflection needed. Game??

    Great overview thanks for sharing . 👍😉For me I prefer the Trangia . It’s has the internal wick , better construction materials, spare parts such as Orings , etc and can take high temperature. Works well as a kit ex: trangia kit 27, I only like the simmer ring of that clone. With the stand I’m not sure you can adjust the simmer ring with a pot on top. I’m not sure I would also trust that clone with fuel in it during transport.

    Problem with placing the stove on the surface and the stand on top is that the stove does get really hot and can burn what it sits on.
    Also, from a leverage point of view, stand on top of the stove will make is more susceptible to tipping over.
    If they were smart, they would have added one small tube to each leg so you can poke a long rod of nail through it to help anchor it to the ground.
    Oh and that flimsy metal simmer ring - it bends very easily. Mine bent and the handle will no longer lay flat.

    I got my nameless one today from aliexpress.
    The stand is rather nice, though the 3 pot holding legs should be longer, to make the stove boil faster. But it boils OK. Just bend the little ones down so the burner will rest on the stand floor to get maximum distance to pot.
    Some things:
    1. It will also hold my Tomshoo titanium Evernew burner copy. The simmer ring will fit also it well and can be used to snuff out the flames. The simmer ring can also be used to simmer that titanium burner! It is a faster more fuel consuming burner without.
    2. The stand has a hole on bottom that can be used in winter to prewarm the alcohol in the burner with a say Bic lighter. That is a big plus.
    3. You will need a larger size pot for the legs to hold and then it will be convenient to store the stove with the burner inside that pot using the nice bag to avoid scratching or noise. My Primus litech trek pot has about 11.7 cm outer diameter and seems optimal. Needs just a windscreen still.
    4. The simmer ring works really well, but since it gets extremely hot, you will need gloves to adjust it. I am not sure about the longevity of that thing though.
    5. Flame distances to the pot:
    Tomshoo: outer 3.4 cm or 1.3 in, inner 2.1 cm or 0.83 in
    Trangia copy: 2.2 cm or 0.87 in

      About simmering with EverNew copy titanium burner:
      I put about 30 ml or 1 oz denatured ethyl alcohol in the TomShoo from a measuring cup. What TomShoo shows as 30 ml is actually more than that, so I did not reach that line.
      I put about 300 ml water in pot and simmered it with maximum aperture. It got to boil in about 17 minutes and boiled slowly until 43 minutes was reached, when the fuel ran out. So the total boiling time was about 26 minutes, with only 30 ml of alcohol. The flame whole time was clean blue burning, until the end minute I got so see some yellow too.
      If I had in pot something like 800 ml to cook I am quite sure it would not boil or keep boiling, but be instead just a warm simmer. It would be easy to take the simmering device sometimes off when needing more heat.
      No need to think anymore, with this stove, that the titanium burner is a fuel hog it seems. This depends on the distance from the simmer ring to the pot being just maybe 1.6 cm. Too little for anything else except the alcohol gases to burn hot blue.

      @jarmosalonen2068 3 года назад

      About other burner/stand positions:
      Please don't put the stand sitting on top of the burner if there is any possibility that your alcohol can soot. It can be a few minutes faster than the normal burner sitting on stand floor position, but consumes fuel a lot more. I suspect the sooting happens because the fuel holes and also the central opening are below the incoming air level.
      Turning the stand upside down with burner on the ground aiming the flames to the hole on stand is quite useless. There becomes an insulating air layer when the pot closes the hole. It can be perhaps used with a tiny diameter pots holding like one cup of water.

    Another Trangia fan here (24 and 27 combinations) but also have this same smaller item as a back-up. Looks like a generic item as mine was £7 a year ago, still only £8 depending on colour options. If you are just after the stand it is a good price and this copy also has the two sizes of gas hole - It even comes in the same draw string bag container - on fleabay - search Portable Mini Spirit Burner Alcohol Stove For Outdoor Hiking Camping 8C - this seems identical

    I've had the Redcamp for over a year. I bought it instead of the Trangia because of the price and the fact that it comes with the stand. One minute difference in boil time is totally meaningless to me. Especially with the price difference and stand. Both work great.

    In all fairness, every camping stove I've used has met it match...or at least a ferule rod or lighter. Otherwise, those boil tests take a lot longer than you'd like.
    Ever try one of the Swedish military versions? They're slightly larger and usually come with a cook kit that weighs close to 4 lbs.

    Personally, I think the Trangia used with the Firebox nano is the best combination. The alcohol burning Trangia is quick and convenient and burns hot. But, if I have to, I can switch to twigs and split wood, or coal instantly. I use the Trangia on most day hikes or a 1-nighter. But, if I’m going to be out longer, the added weight of additional fuel makes the wood burn a better option, at least for me.

    I was unhappy with the affect of even a little air movement on the stove’s heating ability. The flame would dance all around the outside and heat my cup’s handle as well as the bottom. As an experiment, I cut a thin piece of aluminum to cover about half the openings and it improved it dramatically. Just punched a little slot in the aluminum to fit over one stove riser and bent it inside. I was planning on riveting it in place but found that unnecessary. Added advantage is the cup handle can be placed on the same side as the windscreen and kept cool. I wouldn’t cover more than half the stove, though, as I’ve seen Trangia’s overheat if not allowed to breathe.

    Nice video, mate. I purchased a Redcamp stove and ended up giving it away. The simmer ring, although looking easier to use then the Trangia really isn't Mine came off very easily it should be loosely riveted on. Trangia all the way for me. The stand is ok but like you said, a large footprint as opposed to the Trangia Triangle.

    I started watching this channel after I got a Solo alc burner and wanted to learn about Solo lite vs. Solo Titan, but was novice about alcohol fuel. I got Red Camp before this was made for the stand. The round side up is 1 inch. Somebody reviewing said optimum distance for stands. I want a smooth small spot for GSI Outdoors spigot moka pot! Solo has much smoother simmer turner, by the way. And better gasket. Think I will take both for their fuel and switch them out. Regret I missed boat on Trangia. Do not know whether "wick" is in Solo.

    Since Redcamp has about 50% of their holes smaller than the Triangia, it theoretically should burn longer.
    Everyone compares those stoves by boiling water.
    But in a real life scenario, what is the difference in cook time?
    Some foods require a longer cook time at a lower heat level.
    I bought both the Triangia and the Redcamp.
    I like both and LOVE the Redcamp's pot holder stand.
    Triangia was meant for me to use in a firebox nano.
    Redcamp for other things.

    Thanks. I have today ordered one of these types of burners with a couple of liters of isotropic alcohol. I believe methylated spirits can be used too. I was wondering if any other type of flammable liquid can be used. I have acetone for electronics for circuit board cleaning circuit boards. I suppose this can be used in an absolute emergency, as it's not like gasoline. It may smoke more but in an open space could provide a means to cook or heat water.

    • @keisisqrl
      @keisisqrl 2 года назад +1

      Methylated spirits should be great, in the US we usually use denatured alcohol which I think is the same thing. I think yellow HEET is just methanol, but don’t quote me on that. Don’t try to burn acetone in these! It is a lot different from alcohol and can easily explode!

    • @davidmorris-jones210
      @davidmorris-jones210 2 года назад

      @@keisisqrl I tried acetone burned the same as alcohol. As for explosions its not contained under presure. I have researched on flammeble spirits & prices. Meths is £70 for 5 Litres & acetone £13 for the same & alcohol a little more expensive then acetone. Blue meths may smoke more due to the dye. All give off CO2 & water vapour only. Ill be buying acetone. It may well be needed with Britain being directly threatened by Russia. Handy if we lose power. I have 2 solar panels & a 3000 watt inverter, & 3 smaller, 12volt kettle & stove & I modified a camping stove to take big gas canisters. The way things are going with threats of destruction on the innocent British People, Im up North & the Soulth may cop it first.

    • @jarmosalonen2068

      Ethanol and its denatured versions are the best. Methanol maybe, just know its highly toxic. Isotronic, never heard. Isopropanol is also at least highly sooting.
