I learnt a lot from this video, best of all was a new word GULGE, I'm going to introduce gulge into the Ards Peninsula lingo. Great video Frank, thank you.
Brilliant video, I've got a Question ; How come when you did"'nt have enough NM, that you changed only the One Side and not Both Sides? I had an Limited Slip Diff in My Rallycar an Opel Manta 2.0 Gsi so thats why I am asking. Thanks for your answer Akko
So long as the plates across the diff are all in good condition then working on one side like this is fine. Sometimes you’ll need to work on both sides if you haven’t alternative plates of the desired thickness to get the result you want.
Brilliant Video thanks Frank. I'm new to your channel and glad i found you. i do have a question.. the diff appeared to fit very easily into the axle case? Is there very little preload on the carrier bearings?
Thanks Nigel. The bearing preload is minimal. I would describe it as a ‘snug fit’. If you have to force the diff in then the bearings are under to much pressure and start to whine.
Hi, greeting from Goulburn NSW Australia. Just started watching your videos Great stuff, thinking of buying a Mk2 Escort myself. But while we have a great little track here, ( Wakefield) I mosty like driving on the Road/ 4x4. ( have a series 80 Landcruiser and a JK Wrangler) I have never seen anyone explain Rally car Mechanicals as well as you. I love Motorsports. Those Millington motors are the Cats Meow ! THANKS FOR THE VIDEOS !
NICE Realy nice to see the gutts n nuts that go into been a proper Rally car . Two types of drivers 1, The type that is just born to drive comonly MAD but that can do things that just scare YOU ( but brake the car) 2nd. PS LOVE THE CHANEL LOVE THE DRIVING KEEP YOUR CHIN UP ...........
Frank - you ever thought about a complete redesign of the rear into IRS or are you totally happy with the live axle setup?? Would such a thing be allowed in the classes you enter?
Same answer as to Dave Bartrams question. Once you understand the concept and have the correct tools it’s not that difficult. Problem is if you get it wrong you chew up your cwp 🙈
@@FrankKellyRallying yes that is the thing.. Is there a chance of a second question? What did you think of the Lada and the VFTS when you saw them? Im english and they are the legens for all time!
@@FrankKellyRallying when you did the rally legends, there was a lot of Ladas there. there will be an amazing lada out in ireland soon too! the Russan car.
@@Avtovaz21057 ahh now I understand. Yes many beautiful Ladas with crazy drivers. Fantastic 👏👏. I have 2 friends both building Ladas. One in Ireland and one in Russia 😜
I prefer the original ZF motorsport set up with 30/30 ramp angles. Since making this video I’ve moved away from gripper lsd and found great improvements.
Not enough preload and your LSD doesn’t react as effectively as it should. To much preload and your car tends to push the nose (understeer) Everyone likes different things so it’s really what works for you. I could go much higher on preload but I want it to turn in nice so this is my compromise.
What lsd is that? I’m having issues with my metal plate lsd from mfactory in my bmw 130i. The gring, hops, and noise in tight and medium corners is driving me crazy. Set the lock to 40%, but now I’m thinking maybe I should get the preload down a little bit? In my case its controlled by little springs in the inside, and you can change it by adding or removing them. thanks in advance, and great video! Following now.
2:10 I hope the missus didn't see you heading to the workshop with her wok! But seriously, thanks for these technical videos, mate. It's good to see what makes it all happen, along with the actual driving. Cheers, mate. :-)
Great to see what's inside and get an understanding of how it works... Just a little mystified on your method to increase pressure. Firstly will say I have zero knowledge of this and through the speeding up of video I may not of fully followed what you did, but here goes, slap me down if needed! I was understanding it's like two clutches, presumably one for each half shaft? Was I following properly! You then after the first testing of pressure seemed to only increase plate thickness in one clutch, then seemed to repeat this till you got 75... My question if my understanding was correct is: Does increasing one side not just increase one half shaft... or is it irrespective and the whole unit balances across both clutches.... Hope your keeping well Frank, looking forward to the rallies coming back and seeing you out there.... All the best to the whole team 👍👍 Argh just noticed someone commented the same... will save you an answer... PB!
Total novice question. Can all the thicknesses of clutch plates not be added together to achieve desired thickness instead of trial and error?, Thinking more of a mathematical solution than mechanical. I have zero knowledge of this but thoroughly enjoying your mechanical videos
Great vid as always mate, So I buy a LSD from a company already set up ramp angles ect bolt my CW and pinion on. Ew bearings and just bolt it in , check the backlash and as long as it within tolerance I’m ready to go ? What if back lash is out how do you get it within ?
Rarely will the backlash be anywhere near what you want when you first bolt it together Dave. Pinion and diff are both shimmed. Original ford pinion shim is always around 40” so that’s relatively easy. The tricky part is the shimming of the diff side bearings. Firstly you need to fit enough shims behind the bearing so it’s a nice snug fit in the axle. Then you need to swap shims from side to side until you get the backlash correct. This moves the diff from left to right or right to left. Can take 1 hour or 4 hours sometimes 🙈
Out of interest, what make of halfshafts do you use? I notice some big price differences between blue-chip makes, and I'm wondering if the performance difference is like the price difference!
Frank I want to ask the dumbo question... 😬😬 What does the lsd do, is it locking the half shafts together and the clutches release or in my thinking... keeping them free, but ultimately then locking them together... I'm just struggling to work out in my head is pressure for the lsd to work or for it to release... I get that in a normal diff, will let only one side drive and the lsd is to get both sides driving, just cant work out what's going on at 1,000 rpm on a straight road and what's happening at 5,000 rpm coming out of a corner drifting.... Furthermore what's the increase/decrease doing or not then doing. I saw in an answer with increased pressure( I presume that's further binding each half shaft to the other) you get push on and understeer. Which you don't want when trying to get through a stage fast.... but I presume in a playful way... it allows good drifting skills...
Yes it’s referred to as a “plated diff” Much more consistent than a Torsen diff and not as aggressive as a locker. Takes more maintenance but it’s worth it.
