I'm surprised the UK economy, business rates hasn't crippled the company like it's doing to most long standing companies in the UK. But when the banks fail the government jumps.
I recently fitted one of these to my Mini when I replaced my clutch. Hands down the best mod I’ve done. Expensive if fitting on its own but if you fit it at the same time as a clutch (as I did) it was only an extra hours labour. Lohen fitted a TTV Racing clutch to my car at the same time and it is completely transformed. Rather than understeer, you can feel the car pulling you round corners. It’s ace!!!
I don't even need to watch this video, fitted one to my Honda Integra DC2 SI as it was an option my car didn't have, got the Quaife fitted and wow!!! Any FWD or RWD without an LSD is really lacking. For example any BMW M products. 👍👍👍
With the possible exception of the spring preload that is in the Quaife unit, the EATON Detroit Truetrac seems nearly identical in design. No surprise, there (and we assume no conclusions, either). Point is, if wanting this helical-gear-type limited slip for an application in an American-made vehicle, then, look to EATON and the Truetrac if Quaife does not offer any appropriate application for your vee-hickle. THIS video was terrific. As a nerdy machine appreciator my own self, I gladly watched the manufacturing aspects shown here. There is as I type this an EATON Truetrac being installed in the 8.8 Super 34-spline rear axle in a late-model Ford pickup truck I drive. Can't wait! to bring that home later today. Have been awaiting the release of this particular application for almost two years. Cheers! Thanks again for a fascinating video.
Morning, driven lorry to Faversham, come back, then spent 2hrs clearing conifer clippings up! Got home at 4:15, then got the wheel barrow out! Showered and now laid in bed. Very cool and informative video sir.
I bought a mapped E92 330d a couple of years ago (still own it) which has a lot of torque. Great car but let down by serious traction loss, especially in the wet. A quick visit to birds the bmw specialist and a few hours later I got it back with a quaife atb. What a transformation! Anyway, great to see the factory and the manufacturing process that made my LSD. Thanks.
I put a Quaife LSD in my Merkur XR4Ti. What impressed me the most, was how when I would take corners, the inside rear tire, would squeal ever so slightly because it would drag the tiniest bit. I was able, because of this, to corner much much better. Of course my 0-60 time increased greatly and my 60ft time dropped by quite a good margin as to be expected but I never expected the handling to improve as drastically as it did. It was as if the car wasn’t just driving on rails, but GLUED to the rails. Best diff company in the world hands down is Quaife.
Another great video. Have driven a plate and Quaife diff in a front drive car. On a track only car the plate diff is the way to go, but you would hate it on the road. The Quaife however is great on the road and not that much behind the plate diff on the track.
Brilliant video and a real insight into differentials and how they work. A brilliant example of the precision design and manufacturing engineering this country is capable of.
Very interesting video. I remember back the the 90’s when I was a young Plant Operator Mechanic learning my trade in the Royal Engineers. One day we were taught about epicyclic gear boxes with the moons and planets etc. You have never seen a classroom with so many confused faces. Happy memories. Keep up the great videos.
Did research on this and went with one. Haven’t put it in yet. March will be replacing the clutch with performance one, seals etc…. Will do sc service not just the oil. 15% pulley , cam upgrade , cam chain, balancer , gaskets & seals. Bigger aired intercooler too & more. With that I decided on an LSD and was told about these. Seem to be above the rest. Can’t wait for the results !
Fascinating video. I remember rebuilding the transaxle of my first car (Hillman Imp) after the casing broke and understanding how a standard diff worked. That was *cough* years ago and gained so much knowledge over the years of ‘tinkering’ . Thanks and keep them coming.
I added a Quaife ATB LSD to my '13 Focus ST about 5 years ago. The big plus is it nearly eliminates the prominent torque steer that the stock car has. It definitely helps put the power down on the pavement too. Pulling through corners is much smoother and less hair-raising. It was well worth the money and if I had to choose between the LSD and the MP-275 tune, I'd have to pick the differential.
Brilliant video Peter, a really interesting insight into the product and the processes involved in manufacturing high quality components. Something this country was a world leader in & will be once again. Makes me feel proud to be British. Thanks to all involved & to you for sharing. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧. Geof
Fascinating. I had a Quaife LSD fitted to my mapped E92 335d 10 years ago - the difference was amazing. Incredible amount of work going into each one - I am surprised they are not more expensive having seen the video!
I had a focus mk2 st. I did some mods to it, power and chassis. But the most useful and effective mod was the quaife atb lsd. Totally transformed the car's cornering hability improving the traction. Night and day. In every fwd turbo car, this has to be standard from factory in my opinion. If the car doesn't come with one, you'll waste lots of power in the corners.
I rememeber when I was younger playing GT2, an LSD was one of the first few mods on the list because, "it felt better coming out of the corner" Years later, owned 2 RWD cars. 1st was open differential and the 2nd was a VLSD. What a difference it made just coming out of the corner
Well done. I had a Tru-Trac differential in the front axle of a 4x4 pickup back in the 80s, but I never really comprehended how it worked so well. It was designed just like the diff you are showcasing here. Your segment showing the color-coded demo was brilliantly explained. No I get how the torque is sent across to the non-slipping axle. BTW, a 4x4 pickup with traction boosting axles is a force to be reckoned with.
I fitted one this year on my dear 306 S16 which I've had since 2003. It has had quite a lot of suspension upgrades, KW Variant 2 coilovers, Peugeot Sport GrpN wishbones, torsion bars, rear beam mountings and engine mounts. It has been fun to drive both on the track and on twisty roads - last year I fitted semi slicks on lightweight wheels and felt that they were a major upgrade.. well the diff I fitted this summer was the cherry on top of the cake. Of course - every upgrade supports each other but the diff made it like completely a different car.
it sure is for me and it is probably the only car I own which I am never going to sell. I dailydrive a mk2 Audi TT 3.2 which has some minor suspension upgrades (H&R springs and Powerflex black series bushes) but still when there is a trackday I will most likely take the S16 out rather than the TT which is easy to drive fast but lacks the thrill of a "Peugeot GTI" ;) My so called home track is Ahvenisto which is considered as the mini-Nürburgring of Finland and with such a small (ish) car I feel that I an make the most of both the track and the car. Still the car could use a few extra hp now that the suspension and drivetrain is in order :D (and the driver has learned somewhat to drive during the years)
Awesome video. This was brilliant, so informative and great to see behind the scenes of companies like this. I love engines etc and I really found the diffs being built up so very satisfying. Would love to see more like this. Thanks for sharing. Well done.
Great video, thanks! I installed a Quaife diff in my Fiesta ST and it has been transformative. Cool that several of the parts in the video were destined for FiSTs. BTW, when my wife and I were recently visiting England we rented a manual RHD Mini - I loved the challenge of shifting with my left hand for the first time in 44 years of driving manuals!
JEEZ the good old days when you could hear an Escort with a straight cut gearbox then watch it slide through the bends , nice 1 Petrol Ped for showing us this cheers SCOOBS UK (Wales).
Awesome video Pete combining my job and hobby, manufacturing and cars. The skill level for gear hobbing and CNC machining is top notch 😎, serious respect for Quaife.
After watching this I purchased one for my 2013 MX-5 Miata. WOW, major difference in feel. Rear end immediately felt more secure. Felt like 500 pounds were added in the trunk. Better take off and corners are a breeze.
Nice one Pete, great video. It gets mesmerising watching the ceramic tumbler removing swarf and rough edges from the different components, I used to spend many an hour watching it, sad I know lol. Can't wait to see Ruby up and running with her new LSD installed, be prepared to be blown away. Take care mate 👍🏁
@@PetrolPed Can't wait to see you ragging Ruby now, I would imagine you've now reached the point of no more mods needed, Ruby should be more than capable of everything that you throw her at now. All the best Pete 👍🏁
definitely on my list of mods for my Roadster. Thanks for this video and helping me understand just what a limited slip diff is, how it works, and why it's a necessary modification. I can really understand the safety aspect of having one now, especially with as much as my roadster seems to just slip and stall while trying to turn from a side road onto a more heavily traveled road and having to do so quickly (blind spots and all due to terrain and vegetation)
Only just recently heard about these products and this company, because I bought mk5 Golf GTI for a second car. And with all kinds of slippery conditions here in Finland, one of those diffs will certainly be going into my Golf :) With my "primary" vehicle, Jeep Grand Cherokee with 5.7 V8 hemi and Quadra Drive 2 I've got used to so much grip in all kinds of surfaces I really want my Golf to have as much grip as it can possibly get for a FWD car :D And so far I've only heard and read good reviews from Quaife,
Cool vid Pedro!!! I didn't know you were a CNC (cushy 'n' clean) guy originally. I've messed about with friction differentials on RC cars for decades, they're way less complex than geared diffs! But yes, an LSD is something that will make your car acceleryate faster and help you drive safer. Lowering a car won't make it noticeably faster, though you might save fuel, bigger wheels only make it slower and use more fuel (they're heavier and any increase in tyre circumference ups the gearing), so a limited slip diff is a really logical addition that almost no-one thinks about!
4 years at Uni studying Manufacturing Systems Engineering, although I ended up specialising in surface mount technology in the guided weapons industry followed by a move into the music industry making studio and concert sound desks !
Fascinating film Peter. Ive heard the term so many times, its really interesting to find out what it does and how it works. Maybe you could look at doing a few more like these.
Great and informative video.espefually seeing them being made. My 208 BPS has a torsen from the factory and it is my favourite part of the car - instills so much confidence, and the power just goes down, no drama.
I had one fitted into an 03 plate FIAT Seicento of all things as a group on a Forum grouped together to have one made to fit our cars, they made an impressive difference to the grip - especially with wet weather handling 👍
Slow to catch up on this one, I've visited and met Michael but didn't get factory tour. That's a good little demo of how its works. So, -3 seconds a lap, we'll be watching.
It's been a while since I've watched one of your vids Pete, excellent as ever my friend. Glad to see you are still making them and hope it is all working out well in your new chosen career. We have two things in common I never realised, I am also from a production engineering background AND I have a Quaiffe ATB diff in the back of my road legal track car! I now have a much better understanding of what's going on inside it now thank you very much!
Excellent video! So interesting to see the machining and skill that goes into making these diffs. Far more complex than I imagined.Although you explained it really well I still can get my head round exactly how it works to deliver the appropriate amount of power to each driven wheel. I know my Caterham does not have LSD and i get wheelspin on the unloaded wheel , or inside wheel on tight bends. More Please!
@@robinhosleftfoot yes great help with traction car used to spin out all the power on one wheel!!! Now it just grips and goes suspension upgrade greatly improved the car as well.
Great selling point by the Quaife rep...”What is the point of adding engine performance upgrades when you don’t put the power to the wheels?” I’m sold!! Adding a Quaife LSD to my MGB GT.
Excellent film Peter, UK engineering at it's best... You should turn this format into a behind the scenes series of UK Automotive engineering companies?
Mr brain!!!!! 😆 Really nice to take the time to learn a bit about stuff I normally don’t bother that much with. Knew there are diffs, knee a LSD was better for power distribution. That was it. Great vid and great to keep it interesting
I second that a massively great video, thanks to Quaife and Lohen for giving us access to share the experience, I would like to see many more video's of this nature, how about logistics at VAG audi for the R8 or such like...when people see the engineering and design effort that goes into manufacturing something, it's a lot easier to ask them to part with their money. How many people realised that a LSD helps with safety and braking.. not just putting power down, but preventing a skid. This video really makes you stand out and that's important. We have all seen exhaust mods and engine ecu maps, for the more experienced viewer we already know changing tyres is more important it will make you faster..... long before you add extreme loads and temperature to components most owners don't even know exist. The trouble is, we all like to think our cars are unique and I have another 45 bhp... over a standard model.... again, with only a little driver tuition in a standard car, you will beat the mod driver every day...not to mention be a lot safer on the road for the rest of us... the general public are to eager, to right of speed as dangerous and yet many of these features when applied correctly are excellent safety features.
Maybe they can let you come back and do a separate piece on transmission gearbox... it must have been hard work filming in a factory with the noise level, but I think you got it right.
Hi Peter this has to be your best vlog yet. Very interesting, it's good to see how something that's hidden away is put together, it could be the start of an occasional series, what do you think. Educating your followers. .. Regards Simon.
Just about to install aQuaife my self on my Ibiza Cupra. Looking much forward to your video about your experience, with the lsd fitted. Please also tell about the improvement in traction on acceleration on the straights.
Petrol Ped Did you consider a wavetrack? Could be very interesting to see what the difference - IRL - is between those two for a high powered FWD (or RWD). As I understand. The Wavetrack should be better when the car reaches a certain power level. But is the noticable IRL?
I know this is not a Diff and we dont have a mini, but we run a Quaife Sequential gearbox on our race car, fantastic bit of kit, Dave King at Quaife is a legend too, great video...#keepingitbritish #britishengineering #Quaife
Very enjoyable video (like you also trained as an engineer) this really showed of your presenting skills and getting the technical information across in an understandable format.
My kinda video....Oooh does sir want a diff for the weekend ooohh suit you sir 😂 More seriously I’ll be really interested in how it works in a front driver. Had a TB diff in my rear drive hillclimb car and it made it understeer if you were gentle with it as the back had more traction over the front so you had to be positive with the throttle....give it a good boot....to get them just about spinning to even up the front rear balance and then ease off when you run out of road rather than grip.
I think they know exactly how long it takes to make each diff lol they just dont want to share that kind of stuff for public info and rightly so.Great engineering.👍
Top notch company and video once again ! I have heard of their diffs since I was a young lad and never understood the concept behind what went into them. So huge thanks for doing the vid !👍👋
The larger more important question is, “based on power and weight distribution of the race car, is torque or speed bias more important?” And can a certain diffs be “tuned” for the type of track?
No kidding, that was like watching a BBC documentary (in a good way). Appreciate all the hard work you put into your videos 👏👏
Wow...thank you 🙏
Most of us don’t know how much work goes into the making of the parts fitted to our car. The skill and the work was phenomenal. Excellent video Peter.

Looking forward to the install and first drive video 👍
It should be epic !
Nice vid. Had one of these (and one of their gearboxes) in my modified saab for years! Appreciate them even more now 👍🏻
Cool 👍
Wow awesome vid fella, we’ve watched it about five times now. The explanation was just excellent. Keep up the good work 💋
Thank you 🙏
I like that everything is done by hand And not by the machine to ensure quality.
Great video !!! I fitted a Quaife lsd to my bmw M135i great modification really made the car !!! Best mod by far 👍
Does it help with traction? Those cars can catch inexperienced drivers out
@@robinhosleftfoot yes great help with traction car used to spin out all the power on one wheel!!! Now it just grips and goes suspension upgrade greatly improved the car as well.
@@richardtrow2751 Cool, enjoy. Got more respect for that car now seen new M135i
Great selling point by the Quaife rep...”What is the point of adding engine performance upgrades when you don’t put the power to the wheels?” I’m sold!! Adding a Quaife LSD to my MGB GT.
Excellent film Peter, UK engineering at it's best... You should turn this format into a behind the scenes series of UK Automotive engineering companies?
I'm thinking of doing just that 👍
So if you jack up the car and spin a wheel, does the other side spin opposite direction when there is no load?
Mr brain!!!!! 😆
Really nice to take the time to learn a bit about stuff I normally don’t bother that much with. Knew there are diffs, knee a LSD was better for power distribution. That was it.
Great vid and great to keep it interesting
So pleased to hear this 👍
Fantasic, more engineering vids indeed, I really really didn't know what the LCD looked like and kinda only half an idea how worked, NOW I KNOW, mega
That has made my day 👍
Got. Qualife diff on my car and it transformed it performance wise! Great video sir!
Cheers 👍
Great video! Awesome experience.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great to hear you enjoyed this one Alan. I hope to do more of these as it was fascinating to make 👍
Maybe they can let you come back and do a separate piece on transmission gearbox... it must have been hard work filming in a factory with the noise level, but I think you got it right.
Awesome stuff Ped
Cheers Dan 👍
Quality video as always, fascinating stuff! Will be very interesting to see the difference it makes to R59 JCW. Cheers.
It has transformed the car. Video coming soon 👍
Very interesting to see inside the Quaife site in sevenoaks, as i'm often at the screwfix oposite. Great footage!
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Very Very interesting to see how this works... I have been looking to get this done to my F56 ...
Driving impression video coming soon but I can't believe the difference it has made. Very impressive 👍
Great video Mr Ped!
Thanks Mr Ray 👍
with that amount of work done im not surprised about the pricing anymore
Makes them look like a bargain 👍
Standard on my 2009 Championship White Type R. Makes the car! :)
That was really interesting. Loved that. Plus, I'd love that open diff model on my desk... That was a work of art 👌🏻
I'd be playing with it all day !
Hi Peter this has to be your best vlog yet. Very interesting, it's good to see how something that's hidden away is put together, it could be the start of an occasional series, what do you think. Educating your followers. .. Regards Simon.
So pleased you liked it. Wasn't sure if people would. I would love to do more of these 👍
I love stuff like this. So cool, thank you.
Was there a Gleason Torsen similar to this? Had one years ago in the front differential of a four wheel drive truck and it worked very well.
Not sure, sorry 😪
I have liked LSD since the 90's, never thought it would make my gearbox work better.
LOL 😂
I love it, very interesting car review... how a performance component of a car is made...
Cheers Luk, glad you enjoyed it 👍
Just about to install aQuaife my self on my Ibiza Cupra. Looking much forward to your video about your experience, with the lsd fitted. Please also tell about the improvement in traction on acceleration on the straights.
I will, safe to say it has utterly transformed the car. Incredible difference 👏
Petrol Ped Did you consider a wavetrack? Could be very interesting to see what the difference - IRL - is between those two for a high powered FWD (or RWD). As I understand. The Wavetrack should be better when the car reaches a certain power level. But is the noticable IRL?
Great video Pete👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌 did learn a great deal about limited-slip diffs. Thanks, mate really appreciated. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍.
That is good to know 🙏
Just wait til its on your mini.!! I have one on my westfield seven 👌👍. Cheers xx
It's on it and OMG !
I know this is not a Diff and we dont have a mini, but we run a Quaife Sequential gearbox on our race car, fantastic bit of kit, Dave King at Quaife is a legend too, great video...#keepingitbritish #britishengineering #Quaife
Apologies for the repeat posts... (all deleted now) for some reason it looked like they didnt post... my bad
I bought one for my M140i a year ago and theses things are amazing. Thanks for the video.
They are mega things 👍
Very interesting. And great job on your vid. If you get anymore chances to do more like this I’m sure they’ll be well received.
I'd love to do more vids like this. Glad you enjoyed it 👍
I just installed a Wavetrac LSD and lightweight aluminum FW with stage 3 FX300 CLUTCH.
Very enjoyable video (like you also trained as an engineer) this really showed of your presenting skills and getting the technical information across in an understandable format.
Cheers Bud 👋👍
My mom told me to never even get close to LSD but I must say I'm more tempted than ever before 😁
This type doesn't make you see pink elephants 😜😂
My kinda video....Oooh does sir want a diff for the weekend ooohh suit you sir 😂 More seriously I’ll be really interested in how it works in a front driver. Had a TB diff in my rear drive hillclimb car and it made it understeer if you were gentle with it as the back had more traction over the front so you had to be positive with the throttle....give it a good boot....to get them just about spinning to even up the front rear balance and then ease off when you run out of road rather than grip.
Full drive test video coming soon 👍
Hi Ped
Very informative👍👍👍Excellent video, learned a lot. You keep raising the bar, well done.
Thanks Philip...just hope I can keep reaching the bar let alone raising it 😂
Great information ! In changing to LSD, is the original gear ratio changed ??
No 👎
very cool, thanks for sharing!
Great video mate. Haven't seen anything like it. 👍
That is great to hear. Always want to do something a little diff-erent 😜😂
Excellent idea to shoot this video Pete ... am amazed at the time and skill taken to produce these things - but then it is Quaife
I think they know exactly how long it takes to make each diff lol they just dont want to share that kind of stuff for public info and rightly so.Great engineering.👍
Probably 😜
Fascinating stuff, nice one.
Cheers John 👍
Another quality video! I can’t wait to see what you think after you have your diff installed in Ruby
Mate...it's unbelievable ! Video coming soon !
I remember many years ago having Quaife make 20 diffs for me to suit Fiat 500 gearboxes. Cost me £10K!!! Didn't get a goody bag though......
Oops 😜
Top notch company and video once again ! I have heard of their diffs since I was a young lad and never understood the concept behind what went into them. So huge thanks for doing the vid !👍👋
That is exactly why I wanted to do the video. Great to hear is was useful 👍
great video bro very informative for those who havent had the chance to visit quaife
The larger more important question is, “based on power and weight distribution of the race car, is torque or speed bias more important?” And can a certain diffs be “tuned” for the type of track?
